Homeowners Discover Secret Tunnel Under Their House

A hidden tunnel built over a century ago has been unearthed by an Illinois couple beneath their home. Gary and Beth Machens made the incredible discovery when their sidewalk started to buckle, revealing the entrance to the pristine relic not seen since 1895. Inside the tunnel, the couple found a brick archway in near-perfect condition and a large pile of dirt at the other end. @Sarah Hamilton My Father in Law left us cash all around the house like a treasure hunt when he passed and we got the house. It was in sealed zipper bags then put in empty pb hard and another bigger sealed bag (Way more protected than the money this guy found in the box) the cash we found was hidden for roughly 15 years inside and was deteriorating. We had to exchange it all at the bank. I'm guessing his clip was staged with new money, new wood, and a clean box? But I wish I could find another bag of money right now! 😂

My husband does HVAC in Central Indiana. He found literally a piece of the underground railroad tunnel trying to change out old duct work in a church near Carmel, In. Before it was a church, it was an old farmhouse. It was so cool I went there to go inside and feel that feeling.

I was shown a tunnel that went several miles towards downtown indy this elderly lady's victorian house, the enterance was covered with a steel plate in the middle of an old concrete foundation that had something built on it years before, smaller than a 1 car garage, bigger than a woodshed, it's possible it was a servent's quarters but all the victorian homes I've seen they're built right off the back of the house,

@@ayah3223 they actually improved the bookcase. They found the room in the remodel because they wanted to redo the built in bookcase for helping to sell the house. When they started taking it apart thats when they found it. They had the carpenters build another more visually appealing bookcase, but with the additional cost of adding in a secret door. So yes. The secret room, and secret door were kept. The room was never touched or improved upon past this. Obviously it was another selling point though. I like to think the new family that bought the house did something cool with it. I mean how could you not?

It’s probably part of the Underground Railroad, or something similar. If you look at a map of the UR, it goes through Illinois in many places, especially near Alton, IL. I have an area near my house that is part of it as well. How cool!

When I was in junior high it was rumored that the GYM was over a massive underground indoor swimming pool and that if you put your ear to the floor when it was quiet you could hear water trickling. Why? If you freeze-frame at 0:43, you can see that it originally had a wide-open entrance near the back door. It was probably a servants' passage so your maid could access the laundering facilities without traipsing through the whole house with baskets of dirty clothes. "A pile of dirt" at the end doesn't allow us to know where it ultimately ends up. Also, LOTS of old homes had subterranean areas for coal storage, though I've never seen one with such a long tunnel.

There is a tunnel under my house on Washington Street in Midland TX that goes all the way over to the old Loop 250 truck stop. That's where the tunnel ends. Of course it's just a vacant lot now but if you poke around in the ground you can see where I came up through it. I had a steel plate made to keep people from coming into my house, because they came up the tunnel through the wall and into the Attic

There was a rumour while i was a student that there were tunnels under the school and it's cool to know that we were right all along because i learned years later from a retired wood working teacher I saw buying groceries that there were tunnels, for steam pipes to travel under the school. That school also had a massive brick chimney that became unsafe because in an earthquake it would crush half the school, so the school was closed some time after i graduated. Probably long demolished now, i dont know.
