You the man!! You made it simple, common sense and included the very important details for window purchase, tools, moisture defense and thermal breaking. I'm replacing 30 year old double hung windows and I'll find out if any of the defense tech that was available during that time was used as I'm anticipating some rot. Most of all you have me looking forward to replacing a window for the first time as well as it being the prototype for the others including a picture window replacement. Thank you very much and I look forward to your other videos on all things renovation!

Great video! Bought my own house that needed gutted and completely redone. Been using your library to help with the things I didnt know. I worked residential framing and remodeling back in the 90s and still have retained a pretty good idea how to DIY most things even though I have been working heavy construction for the last 20years. Especially windows, I installed hundreds. But your other vids have shown me some new tricks that I didnt know since tech and materials have evolved in the last 20 years so I figured I'd check this one out. Back in the day we used to build up sills and sides with plywood or dimensional lumber to minimize the gaps, shim and then stuff fiberglass in the gaps and caulk the interior. Cap the exterior with aluminum we'd bend on a brake and then caulk seams. The way you wrapped the tyvek, waterproofed the sill and used foam just makes so much sense from an insulation and waterproof sense. I'm glad I watched before I started my installs. They have come a long way with foams in the decades I've been out of the game. Thanks for the great content

Hey Jeff! Thanks for all of the time you put into educating us! My wife and I bought a major fixer upper house in Orangeville, ON and close in January, 2022. We've done many remodels over the years but never a gut job down to the studs (renovation); nor have I done windows before... I feel I have a good understanding of most things, since I've dabbled in just about everything, but your videos have certainly helped me understand things way better than before... And maybe even made me realize I did a lot wrong haha. Since we live and work in similar areas, I was hoping you could recommend a window wholesaler that I should order my new windows from. Thanks again!!

Im assuming you ladies are leaning how to be “Handy Men”? If so, good for ya! Hope all works well, no better feeling that when YOU BUILD IT! And, you can say “don’t need a man to do work for ya” and it saves ya SOOOOO much money. For example. Doing my Front Porch Roof and A window and a peace of Vinal and minuscule paint touch up. But, a contractor woulda “UP” charge items and pay labor. Do all that, talking $2500+. Do it MYSELF, talking $850ish....BIG DIFFERENCE!

I wish I had found your video sooner! I just put a piece of wood under a replacement window (post termite repair - the replacement window was from 12+ years ago and not done correctly by "professionals" in the first place.) I did put a heavy glob of silicone behind it to meet up with outside. Now I wish I hadn't and just used the foam. It's wedged in pretty tightly so I doubt I can get it out safely. I love your videos and have been binge-watching them lately. We were thinking about doing some of the demo for 2 bathroom renovations to save money, but after you mentioned the cost of tub/shower without vs. with new floor tile we decided the estimated we got were reasonable and I will just watch the work being done to ensure it is done correctly. The videos are truly homeowner-friendly!

The main reason I come to this channel before trying anything at home is because he tells me everything I need to know, not everything there IS to know and it makes it so much easier to understand and not feel as overwhelmed from information overload. And of course we're both Canadian so his store choices, building code mentions, and when he talks about weather patterns I know we have the same "types" of weather.

Jeff, I would like to thank you for the extra work you do to make your DIY videos. Your information and demonstrations have been very useful to me. I am restoring a late 19th century 2 storey log cabin that was relocated to a waterfront site 40 years ago, it was reconstructed to about 90% complete and then abandoned. It had no maintenance for about 20 years. I have had to abate the attic, replace windows, add new siding, rebuild a deck and 3 season room - and I have referred to your videos as my go-to resource. Not only have you saved me a ton of money, but the tips, tricks and recommendations for certain products that will help to avoid water problems in the future have made the job easier and more fun. It feels like I have done a good job ensuring I can enjoy the cottage without concerns or worry that I took a shortcut where I should not, or that the work is somehow insufficient. So, I wish I could shake your hand - virtual will have to do. I wish you much success in your business and I sincerely thank you.

I am so grateful rn to have come across your channel, instantly subbed. I'm on my 3rd video ...even if they're long as heck! - but we're in a mess with a new house with almost a complete reno and we've just cut ties with our 2nd contractor bc of all the bs they're pulling. I'm adding a tidbit here so others can be cautious. Don't rip out everything just because the contractor/hired help is intimidating you to do so! we were bullied and manipulated to do fixes we could've lived with and we decided it's just better to DIY some of the stuff we want to do and get specialized help with plumbing and electrical. Thank you so much for these helpful videos, I just learned a bunch of stuff about window install. Taking notes, rewinding etc like this is a university lecture! I appreciate the following about your videos (and I watch a lot of home improvement stuff and am a millennial): 1. 0 bs music covering up what you're saying 2. pauses at the right places, cutting out unnecessary bits so we can stick to the video which is already technical and long 3. very technical ...no loooongggg personal anecdotes, with light humor and mainly focused on instructional content 4. mentions of useful tools, materials, variations in applications and potential differences in conditions etc. again, ty so much!

Really great tutorial. I work reno and, if I may, add some notes from my experiences: 1. side-HUNG & top-HUNG & PIVOT windows: the JAMBS are not always square, and I always check that the sides JAMBS are plumb, and that they align correctly with the SASH. 2. big and heavy windows (2 person to move), as well as 2 sections (side-by-side) windows: I leave the bottom shims in place, as well as the shims under the link between the 2 sections (the same that I would do with sliding glass doors) Thx for sharing, again I've learned many new tricks.

Hi Claude, when I order windows I always leave a little extra gap on an old house. in most cases if the window operates now then the new one will fit in the space just fine with the same measurements. Cheers with leaving in the shims.
@claudews529
@claudews529 4 жыл бұрын
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I guess my technical english is not that good. I edited my comment with proper terminology (hopefully). My comment was not related to measures, but to weight, shims & plumb jambs. - side-hung windows have a tendency to pull on the side jamb and unsquare the window casing (at installation time). So I check jamb plumb, and sash/window-case alignment, for complete free movement of the sash. - For very heavy windows (ie: 5'x6' double glass), I leave the bottom shims in place. I don't fully trust the foam. Hope that clarifies And thank you for previous notes... regards

My cordless reciprocating saw is the best tool I've ever bought. Haven't used my corded Sawzall for years. Not only can you use a battery powered reciprocating saw on anything around the house, you can use it on trees on your property and other tasks around the yard. Come to think of it, I'm going to sell my Milwaukee corded Sawzall, I hardly ever used it. My second favorite tool I would recommend is a cordless narrow crown stapler. Mine is a Ryobi and Ryobi doesn't get much respect but their cordless narrow crown stapler is awesome!

When I was a kid, dad put an addition on our house so that everyone would fit. I am amazed by the things a handy person can do. And now that I have my own home, your knowledge (and production quality) has made me confident enough to do my homework and give my projects a go. This is the most practical and realistic home repair show since Home Improvement! Many thanks to you fellas and happy Thanksgiving.

Thank you. Very helpful in building a little confidence for my first window replacement job today. My mother has windows literally falling out of the house and isn't in a financial position to call a pro. As a professional cabinet maker/painter I knew I could help, but was slightly nervous. Not anymore.

I found this really amusing, wild with the knife and trying to rip out a window that was recently installed without removing the screws… informative video!

What a great tutorial. Very relatable. Too often the installer is doing highly-skilled activities. This gives me hope that I could do the installation.

Being in the glass trade, my mentor told me a story years back, piece of glass he and his apprentice were carrying snapped and he being green reached for it to try and catch it, annnnnd it sliced it off clean, he held his apprentices DETATCHED hand from the wrist down in ice packs from his lunch box while rushing him to the hospital from a job site by ambulance... safety came second that day. I digress, love your content, I’m buying a new house soon and can’t wait to get to work making it a home. 👍🏼

Great video, super helpful. Is it possible to replace an old wood window on a 2nd floor without getting to it from the outside (up a ladder, etc)? Any suggestions on how? Thanks!

Here in Norway, we always have a metal plating that runs from under the window to the outside, like that blue sticky sheet you're using. Will you add that later?

Wish you lived in Michigan. I’m 76, (woman) doing my own repairs. It’s a learn-as-I-go. Bay window in bathroom has rotted thru and it’s the middle of Sept. with it being nearly impossible to find anyone to do the work except guys no one wants to hire. (I’ve met 3, had 4...nightmare) I figure I can do this... I’m saving every video you make! Thank you for your focus, to-the-point approach without all the unnecessary ramblings on!

Hey Jeff, big fan, long time follower. Would you do anything different when installing a replacement window in brick? Particularly trying to figure out how to properly flash and seal it on the outside.

Hi, my name is Antonio and I'm from Portugal, I've been seeing a lot of videos and concluded that your experience are relevant to my doubts. I restor my kitchen with drywall and I need to mount a strip of tiles between the counter and the upper cabinets. I saw so much information that I ended up being more confused than I was before. I need your opinion for the following questions. To put the tile on the drywall! - is it advisable to use any waterproofing material? - Is a primary also needed? - Or can I put the tiles directly on the drywall, or is there a specific adhesive cement for this application? Thank you, I look forward to your feedback

Could you use ice shield to seal up the bottom of the window opening instead of blueshield? I'm asking because I have 3/4 roll of it lying around after fixing a roof leak, and have several windows I will be replacing :)

This video came at the right time. My windows are 19 years old and needing to be replaced because more than half of them have broken seals or are leaking and damaging my walls. Looks like I should be able to change them out myself. We shall see.

Hi Jeff. I have aluminum windows in brick and siding in a house built in 1992. Window companies normally take a torch to the glue holding the window in to take out the glass. I've replaced a couple small windows with a torch. It works but the torch along with using a scraper or razor to separate the glue sometimes cracks the window making it dangerous to remove. Are there any tips you can offer to soften the glue up enough to remove the window and avoid cracking it too much? Note that the window frame is aluminum so I don't think the heat stays where the glue is for too long. Also, I probably won't be doing this without your videos - I appreciate your videos.

When I took the siding off my house to replace it along with the windows I found the only thing holding the windows in place was the trim. The windows were never mounted, wow.

2 years ago I replaced the front door myself because the 3 quotes I got were insanely priced. I'm handy, but I never hung a door and doing an exterior door did scare me. Anyways, aside from the casing, there was only 1 nail holding the door in! It sure was easy removing the door. After I successfully completed that install...all the doors got replaced because that job gave me the confidence to do the rest. Thanks to KZbin videos like these, us DYI'ers can save some $$$.
