I especially appreciate the video you did on drywall joint taping. It has been a game changer for me. I never understood the reason for the tapered ends of the sheets. mine too came original with the house... 1915 red clay brick that can be found in any town older than 1910 in north america and the UK..... THEN in about 1935 Mrs. Carrinder wanted a huge brick fireplace so it got enlarged to 7ft wide 5ft tall with a 4ft by 3ft fire box... huge granite mantle piece.... and it's cracking on the outside... this may not be cheap to fix

Hi Jim, if you use porcelain tile as a face around the fireplace with metal studs and cement board you can get a very similar look. you just need to be code compliant with combustibles nearby.

I am doing a similar project in my living room. My house was built in 1930. I have had the mantle torn out and it used to be a fire place that was closed with concrete. At this point considering what you said about the fire place and the tv, should I recess it into the wall or build a box like you did?

Would you advise using a sprayer or rolling with like a small 1/4” roller? Also, can shiplap be installed using only liquid nail (I.e. without actually nailing into studs?) I heard someone a month or so ago just mention about having a problem with a new house build about this. The builders only put in electrical outlets next to the fireplace and there were no outlets anywhere else as they didn't want the tv over the fireplace. They had a previous house like that and the tv went out after a month or so due to the heat causing damage to the tv. I'm thinking that was in 1 of your videos but not sure exactly where I heard it.

Jeff…. Wanting to put shiplap up on a metal studded/ drywall covered wall. The shiplap is the mdf type, as I’m looking for the clean/ smooth look. Researching basically finds 2 camps ….. trim screws or using an air nailer and adhesive … some say brads, some say finish…help me out… I only want to do this once!!

Jeff for quick mail framing smaller projects using 2x4 studs what size nails would I use for nail gun. I found regular framing nails often split the wood? Will be finished off with nicer finish nails when I skin the project.

Jeff, I hope you see this. If I have carpet, do I have to remove a remnant for framing if I’m attaching the framing to the ceiling, wall and flanking bookcases? If I ever remove the fireplace, I’d hate to have a hole in the carpet but I do want to do what’s best.

Great question. I would suggest you see the fireplace as a 50 year fixture. remove the carpet so you can attach the framing. if you don't the screw can grab the fibers and make a run right across then room. Cheers!
