When I lived in Queens, I finished my basement using tile floor, metal stud framing, foam sheet insulation, and Paperless gypsum board. It can't grow mold because it has no biological material like Paper or Wood for the mold to grow on. I think the name brand I used was called Dens-Armor. Also, when you install your drywall hold it just off the floor 1/8" or less with a flatbar, to prevent moisture climbing up the wall through capillary action. What supports mold? wood framing, paper backed drywall, paper tape. In wet areas, don't use that stuff.

Since this is for DIY homeowners, it might be wise to suggest to turn off the electrical in the area. There may be stagnant water and electrical boxes that could be harmful.

I sought you out when I wanted to DIY tile my bathroom. I continued to pay attention because of the down to earth, no nonsense, accessible advice that you give with every post. As someone who grew up living in a basement that flooded two or three times per year, what you had to say here would have changed my life for the better had my father been able to watch back in the day. Keep up the good work. People are listening…more than you probably know!

All great tips. I worked as a restoration technician and dealt with water losses some other tips would be turn the power off in the room before removing the outlet covers especially if the area is wet. Take lots of pictures, document your time cause some insurance companies will wave a portion if not all of the deductible fees since you tried to mitigate the loss prior to the insurance company arrival. And a wet dry vacuum is a great tool to aid in removing water from your basement when the sump pump won't suck up the standing water.
@TinManKustoms
@TinManKustoms 3 жыл бұрын
The best way to remember what kind of water your dealing with is if it came from a drain or a toilet or through the wall it's dirty water. If it came from a water supply line or if rain came from a hole in your roof it's considered clean water.
@TinManKustoms

Another thing that will need to be considered before removing any materials from your wet basement is the age of the home any house built prior to 1990 may contain Asbestos Drywall Compound or Floor Tiles and Vermiculite Insulation. These materials will need to be tested before removal can begin.

Adding my comment for the algorithm. Mike's good - but he's a TV presenter first, a builder second. He has to make his producer, director, and the rest of the production crew happy. Compared to the other television building show hosts, he's one of the best ... but. Jeff is not a tv host. I get the feeling he tells Max what to do, not the other way round :-) If the sound isn't perfect, if the lighting is off, if Jeff's arm is in the way of the perfect camera shot ... tough. Jeff is in the real world, which is why I prefer his videos. Thanks for making videos like this. I moved away from the Northeast a couple years ago, but I have friends back there who might need this info.

@@lizcademy4809 😂 I was being sarcastic about mike. He’s an ok guy, but he is just a tv personality as he hasn’t really been in the construction game for a while. Jeff is the real deal, he’s funny, practical and saves viewers real money while giving them the confidence and know how to do these jobs ourselves. This was a throw back joke to one Jeff made about a Holmes endorsed foam mix product in a bag he used instead of quikrete a while back when he put up his privacy fence.

Thanks for the video. I am too frugal for cutting at 4ft b/c it would be double the cost for drywall and insulation. How about sitting on a bucked and scooting across the floor as you work on the drywall l? For our basement we are replacing the bottom 2ft of fiberglass insulation with 2 ft of R-13 insulation foam boards. It was so easy we finished putting the insulation step in 3 hours. Now if the basement floods again, we can let that dry out and re-use it. We also replaced the baseboard with pvc boards and left several inches between the bottom of the drywall and the floor. Hopefully, if/when we flood again we can just pop off the trim and let everything dry out with no or little need for drywall removal and no insulation replacement. Good luck everyone!

Emergency homeowner tips would be awesome. A few years ago I went in to a neighborhood right after a tornado to help cut trees to clear the road so first responders could gain access and rain across a couple of houses with busted water lines and gas lines. When you see bubbles blowing up out of standing water it’s a little disconcerting especially when you don’t know how to cut the gas mains.

We were fortunate that our flooding incident was a hot water tank that exploded and we caught it pretty quickly. Fully covered by insurance, but thankfully it domestic hot water and not sewage. Great video! Dealing with this kind of thing myself currently here in NS after the massive rainstorms recently. My basement is finished but it has this "false" wall around that's about waist high with a shelf that goes around the exterior walls just below window level. It appears to be a design choice so that there's a shelf for decoration? Can I tear into it in the same way shown here? Or is there another purpose for this wall that I'm not aware of? Typical early 2000's build with city water and sewer system and we don't have natural gas or anything like that.

I had a tiny flood in my Calgary basement from overland rain in the spring bout 5 years ago. The cheap baseboard swell up and feel like old white glue, they mold up so crazy fast, like within 12-24 hours. Jeff is right, they are garbage.

In your opinion what would be the best flooring option for house that floods? We are currently down to our unsealed nasty foundation. We flood most of the time when it rains. Just a few inch in the doorways usually.

I just did this!! Only to discover that my base boards are rotten from previous water damage. Can you show me how to fix the baseboard without reframing the whole wall?
@tay13666
@tay13666 3 жыл бұрын
Are you talking about your bottom plate? Baseboard are trim that go around the bottom of the wall in a finished room. Bottom plate is the 2x4(6) that is below the studs in the wall. IF it is the bottom plate, and it is rotten, there is no fixing it, only replacing it. With luck you can cut the nails attaching the studs to it (best with a reciprocating saw) and remove the bottom plate and put a new board in there.

@@tay13666 yes it's the bottom plate! I've already cut it away, and did a 2ft cut around the room where the rot is present. How can I replace the wood beams every 2ft, can I nail a metal plate to existing and the new piece I'll put in (this is not a load baring wall)

@Home RenoVision DIY I was looking for info on how to determine if you have mold/mildew under studs from water flooding from the laundry room (not sewage). It would have been 2" of water or less from laundry room going into the bathroom, hall and wire rooms. I don't recall drywall getting wet in any room. Shop vac used for water removal. Since I was washing clothes and drying, the heat from dryer evaporated the rest of the water in that area. Laundry room is partially unfinished, but bathroom is finished. Concrete slab w/2x6 studs. What is the best way to determine mold/mildew before we dry in the laundry room/remodel the bathroom? Do we just cut a circular hole in the 2x6 and see what it looks like under there or is there another way? If we do have mold/mildew, I'm assuming I just use the same stuff you used here in this video? Thanks!!!

if you have a small water event your house can usually deal with it within 2 to 3 days to regain normal moisture levels after you clean up the majority. In most cases mold needs 5 to 7 days to proliferate and then even after that it can't grow unless the moisture remains constant. I would say unless you actually see it or smell it it is not a problem. Cheers!

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I truly enjoy your videos and you insight. You explain everything so well. I had water from my backyard come into my basement no sewage involved. I am removing the LVP laminates and drying the floor. I started to remove the planks and dry the floor its so minimal but I am afraid that little bit of water can cause huge mold problems. Should I remove all the planks and start fresh and spray mold control? Do you have a video to help stop water from coming into the house from a window? Thanks and look forward to your response. All the best!

Is it really bad to use outdoor bleach since it's stronger?
@Brodmann312
@Brodmann312 3 жыл бұрын
With good ventilation and a mask, outdoor bleach can be mixed in a low concentration to be used safely indoors. Don't guess on the math or cut corners with respiratory health. If using Clorox look up "make your own disinfecting solution", and you can put in the product number, then they will provide a safe dilution formula. Alternatively, there is a Canadian chlorine dilution calculator available through their "foodsafe" site. Best wishes!
