This video sold me on the flooring and I have since done lots of research that many may find helpful. The manufacturer is WellMade and was originally made in China but is now being made in Georgia as well. A good article on the person who developed this is a Feb. 7, 2022, article in FCNews. The product is privately labeled and different sellers use different names for the product line, color/finish, etc., but the same pictures and sometimes the same verbiage to describe it. It always come with 16.68 sq ft per box. It is 7 mm thick, 5" wide, and up to 4' long. It has a urethane/aluminium oxide finish. The wear layer / veneer (wood) is 1.2 mm (47.2 mil), the core is 5.8 mm (HDPC = high density polymer composite, which I believe is the same as SPC = stone polymer composite). The attached vinyl padding (I would call it rubber) is 1.0 mm. Jeff's link takes you to wayfair (Islander Flooring line). Other sellers that I found are - Home Depot (Optiwood line) - BuildDirect (Jasper/Varuna line) - Wallmart (Pacific Crest line) - Costco (Golden Arowana line) I have ordered samples from three of these sellers--they all have WellMade stamped into the attached padding/underlayment and the samples are all the same size. The color/wood/finish I have chosen is called honeycomb, countryside, sunglow, or frontier, depending on the seller (often given the number 71106). It is currently cheapest at Home Depot. I haven't bought mine yet--don't plan to install it until next year and plan to use it both in the basement (about 700 sq ft) and main level (about 511 sq ft). I looked into using a 6 mil moisture/vapor barrier and/or an additional separate underlayment (not sure I would call it a pad). Although several people say not to use an underlayment because one is already attached, there are some separate underlayments (rather hard and thin) that are made to go with such floors with attached pads. The risk of certain secondary underlayments would be too much give, which may cause the locking connection between the planks to wear down when the floor is walked on. I think Abatec that Jeff recommends (1.5 mm thick) is a good choice, as is Quietwalk by MP Global (2 mm). I think adding a 6 mil vapor barrier to a separate underlayment would be overkill. The advantage of one of these two separate underlayments would be sound deadening and thermal insulation, in addition to being a moisture barrier. One think several people recommend is using a PE backer rod (a spongey long thing with a circular crosssection, maybe 3/8" diameter) around the edges the rooms (where one would use spacers during the installation), topped with silicone caulk--I don't think Jeff talks about this and I'm not convinced it is worth it, except maybe in a kitchen or bathroom. This edging would allow the expansion/contraction of the floating floor but would attempt to prevent water going in along the edges (e.g., under the molding) and soak in/under the flooring.

Great info! Thanks. Did you end up going with this? I'm looking at engineered wood for my 1000sqft basement in Illinois. I'm considering this as the labor should be much cheaper given the ease of installation.

Wait wha? This isn't that new. We installed floating engineered hardwood bamboo like three years ago. We love it and haven't had any issues. Super easy install and was much easier to snap together than when we did straight up vinyl, although the vinyl we got was some cheapo stuff where the lock system would fall apart if you looked at it wrong.

Hey Jeff, Once again very informative video. I am trying to install this kind of waterproof hardwood from homedepot. I have planked subfloor that was installed around 1955 .My current wood floor is squeaking a lot through out the house and I think that the 50 percent of the area in a room makes noise. Is there a way to install engineered hardwood over that old floor and eliminate the squeak ? or do you recommend removing the old wood floor, reinforce the subfloor and then install the new floor ? your opinion is appreciated. Thank you

It’s a ACH (durability rating) is 3/5 with regular hardwood around 2. It’s also water resistant and due to the stone core has about 70% less expansion and contraction as wood based stuff.

That board you beat in with the rubber mallet was horrendous. Between cutting the locking mechanism off and then having it that tight to the bottom plate of that wall leaving zero expansion especially in the direction the floor expands and contracts the most (the long length expands the least so those kerf cuts on the bottom you talked about in the beginning don't help that expansion).

Too late!!! I saw your previous videos and I considered that vinyl was a better option (2nd option after hard wood) than other ones, because vinyl is waterproof, humidity resistant, and wear resistant. Also, does not expand or contract and contains iron particles in their manufacturing. Thus I bought already my waterproof luxury vinyl. I was wondering if engineered hard wood won't suffer the same destiny as laminate if water goes inside (deflection)?

If it’s difficult to flatten then planing the bead eases it. I used a jigsaw, workmate and clamps, and a sliding mitre saw. and a block plane. If you are sliding it under an obstacle like a toilet then you might need to but joint by cutting and planing off the click joint. Clamp boards before rip cutting.

How does engineered hardwood normally hold up in areas where the humidity stays between 17% & 25% if it rains? A few years ago I had Armstrong engineered hard wood, $5.88 sq ft flooring cost plus labor, installed in my condo. After 6 months some of the corners started to lift. The installer said he had never seen that happen and that I probably needed more humidity. The first floor was installed over concrete slab, glued together but floating. The second floor was nailed down. Both had this problem and in many places where it was nailed the surface was slightly raised but the layers were holding together. I sold the condo due to some circumstances and have no idea how they have held up since. After that I purchased a house fixer and have lived with plywood floors for 3 years and was hoping to finally install solid hardwood. After watching your videos and due to sudden price increases I had almost convinced myself to just do vinyl. I do not have a humidifier in my furnace and I do not have air conditioning but that is a story for another day. I just don't want to make a mistake. I do not want to have to tear my house up for flooring again so when it is done it needs to last.

Ive had real hardwood, engineered and vinyl, laminate and ceramic appearing hardwood , and as town without dogs really needs to look closer at luxury vinyl (then again doors are hell on rugs and hardwood!) . You take risks whenever you place any real wood product on a slab, and NEVER in a basement unless you live on a hill in the desert ! The luxury vinyls are just so good today you really need to try one you can like before you take this risk. Now if you know you don’t live on clay, you have a commercial grade sub slab vapor barrier (Stego, Dorken etc) not just some poly from a big box store) that you personally sealed carefully , ensured slab pour didn’t penetrate, AND you have a whole house dehumidifer and an excellent sub slab drainage system, AND you lay sure go ahead, even in a basement , but obviously this will nto be the case for most homeowner , and what do you do when you have. Spills leak from water heater, burst pipe, backed up sump, rain floods ? Take you global flooring budget and consider the relative merits of wood, vinyl tile and carpet carefully ; and dont eb locked into oen type fo floor throughout the house.

I used a different manufactured wood product, though it was quite similar. When sliding a locked board in place you can use a small cut board (sacrificial piece) to tap it into place. No gaps and you don't risk breaking the end locking mechanism.

I was laying half inch engineered hardwood and some of the planks were a bit warped, so I set my circular saw to cut through about half the thickness and cut a series of cross cuts every 3-4 inches to allow the board to lay flat. Then I saw this product, and they did it already for you. And yes, pre-painting the door trim and baseboard and laying it on top of the floor after the flooring is down is the only way to go.

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Thanks. Was was looking for something like this a while back, but my job is done now. My only concern with a floating floor is that I can tell in about 3 steps if the floor is floating or not. It doesn't have that solid glued down or nailed down "thud" when walking on it. It is more of a give away when dogs walk on it with their clicking claws. I glued my engineered hardwood mainly because it was adjacent to tile set on a concrete slab and the tile is like rock. I didn't want that transition from sold rock feel to a hollow sound/feel. I'm happy with the results, but it was much slower and more labor intensive to glue it all down to the slab. I would definitely use your product in a condo or smaller house.

After trying a dozen of vinyl samples, went with engineered hard wood (white oak). The main reason was the feel and look that i got from hardwood, and like you said, high end vinyl products could cost the same and hard wood! I guess vinyl would be good for basement projects where humidity or water could be an issue. Thanks for all your valuable recommendations.

I installed LVP in our last home a few years ago, but it scratched up easily and even buckled/cracked in some areas. We are buying a new home, and so I'm wondering if the waterproof laminate would be more durable. How's the water resistance of this engineered HW?

Good idea taking the door trim off and trimming it rather than going with oscillating saw which will produce a gap that cant really be avoided. Also good tip on screwing first row down. Last time I did a floor right towards the end I noticed it had moved about a inch. Luckily got it back in place. This stuff does look a lot nicer than laminate.

@@kirkyorg7654 Yes experience will definitely help in situations like this. I've made plenty of cuts that are considered sketchy to beginners. No matter how much experience you have though there's always a risk when using a machine against what it was designed to do. Bottom line is table saws were never meant to be used freehand. I appreciate that Jeff mentioned kickback. The riving knife was doing the real work here to prevent kickback while he did the longer cuts. Kickbacks are the real enemy, not pushing your fingers into the blade like you suggested. Reason being that kickback usually draws your hand toward the blade as the piece rotates and faster than a person can react.

A bit overzealous on this one. This isn't even close to hardwood. This garbage will end up in the landfill in less than 30 years. Real hardwood can last over 100 years. I wouldn't put this in a home. I love engineered flooring. The best I’ve used so far is Kahrs made in Sweden. It’s 5/8” thick with an 1/8” wear layer. But the best part is that it has an end lock mechanism to keep the ends nice and tight. It’s called 5S click lock.

Cutting that piece by the door so it is so tight (that he had to hammer it in) against the bottom plate of the wall is just dumb. No matter how little this stuff expands/contracts, putting it in that tight is just begging for problems. He's going to have at least 1/2" of drywall plus that 3/4" baseboard - he could have left an inch gap and wouldn't have had a problem. Not leaving at least a half inch is reckless. This channel has so many excellent videos with so much great information but then the straight up dumb moves like this turn me off. It's like 99% great, 1% pure cringe bad advice.

I'm gonna stay with LVP. Handles traffic better, has almost 0 wear, great for pets, and waterproof. I'm trying to avoid wood at all costs, not just because of the price now, but the longevity and maintenance would cost you so much more in the long run.
@ThanhTran-qq6xm

I just don’t understand what’s the benefit for “Wood” flooring. Yes real wood is a beautiful material but real living practicality it’s horrible. I have installed LVP for my house from a brand called Flooret. It’s been four years now and my vinyl literally looks the same as it was the first day.
@shane250
@shane250 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThanhTran-qq6xm Yep, same here. 5 years, 2 dogs, clumsy wife (drops a knife at least twice a week)...And the floor looks brand new. Plus, you can clean it with whatever detergent/method you want, and use as many water as you desire. Vinyl planks can have a wood look if someone like wood. But they have them in click-lock tile shapes now as well. And just refinishing your hardwood after 5-15 years (depending on the kind of traffic) will cost more per sq ft than installing new LVP. Hardwood has literally 0 advantages. Next week we are replacing our deck with a "Rubacrete" porch. 0 maintenance, waterproof, 10 year commercial/20 year residential warranty...It will actually outlast concrete. And the best thing is, it cost only 20% more than a cedar deck (in today's market). Same thing with a lawn. Look at how to establish a microclover lawn. Only needs 4 mowings/year, drought resistant, and cost 40$ per 500 sq ft to do by yourself. Needs watering only on the first 3 weeks...and then NEVER (Unless you had a drought longer than 4 weeks). I live in canada. Wood as an exterior material makes even less sense here...But everyone seems to have it for some reason. What I usually do for exterior wood that is still in good condition, is sealing it with a clear truck bed liner. It lasts about 7-8 years. Exterior wood paint lasts 2 years here if you're very lucky.

Sorry to say.... vinyl is vinyl. It’s thin , doesn’t absorb sound and looks like vinyl. Wood feels better to walk on , it doesn’t allow an echo in the room And it adds value$$ when you sell.

@@dicelady4 1. Vinyl is vinyl is a blank statement. 2. Wood feels better? IDK, I usually wear slippers in winter and socks in the summer, because I like having clean feet at all times. 3. If you have an echo in your rooms... You don't have enough furniture there. I have no echo in my house, and it's all LVP. 4. Value to whom? I'd pay more for a house full of LVP (not sheets or stickers) over hardwood. Most will probably not, but that's just because they have never seen LVP and think vinyl is all sheets\stickers. 5. Sound proofing is all about the insulation between the joists and the underlayment.
