Hi, I'm a mom of 2 on the Aspergers Spectrum. I've been homeschooling them for several years now because their public school system was not teaching them at their level. So much was going over their heads! I've been subscribed to you for a while now. You really help me with my children on a daily basis! Thanks!

I'm homeschooling my son who is Autistic like myself! Covid was really just the push I needed, as I've been wanting to homeschool him for years. The school system just weren't teaching him at his level, he's quite academic and a self taught reader and writer and it was starting to look like he was losing his confidence and his love for learning, so I knew it was time to take him out of school. He's thriving now that he's at home! Absolutely love your channel by the way, have learned so much just from watching your videos so thank you!

I am going to start homeschooling my 10, going into 6th grade, granddaughter who is Autistic, ADHD, and ODD. I should make videos for our progress and how we do it. Obviously it is going to be some time to figure out what works. Her school is closing and no other schools are a best fit for her. Plus she is super smart

I homeschool both of my kids I have since my daughter was in kindergarten now she is in 5th grade. My son is 8 and possibly on the spectrum and maybe other “learning disabilities” all of your tricks and tips are helping me so, so much. I see so many things like oh wow that’s just like “L”. Maybe now I can open more doors for him with learning because right now we feel like we are hitting a wall.

We used to cut apple slices and remove the seeds, paint on the slices and push them on paper, can also cut potatoes in half and use a cookie cutter to cut out a shape from the center and paint as before. It was fun and I am planning to do this with my kids! We will start officially homeschooling in December, one with ASD/ADHD/SPD and one neurotypical, both very intelligent and not being served best by our public schools. Thanks for these videos, great resource!

We are homeschooling. I am an Aspie, as is my daughter, and my son has autism with much more severe delays and disabilities. Easy for my daughter, who is driven and "high functioning" like myself. We struggle with how to address my son's needs in homeschool, with limited resources; he was receiving services from several therapists within a special needs classroom before the pandemic shut down the schools.

another good idea would be to draw with chalk. you’d be able to get some fresh air and some sun! you could just draw, make a game, practice writing and spelling, or practice abc’s. some fun games would be to write the abc’s out and then ask a child to find that letter or it could be a bigger, more visual way of spelling words. you could make a “trail” with small tasks to complete before you get to the end. lately i’ve been drawing with chalk as much as i can. it lets me get out of the house and it helps me feel less down while being away from friends.

I would give my son uncooked rice to play with in a tray. I colored some pretty colors with a small amount of food color so it was white pink and blue, very pretty. He would drive his cars through it or dump it from a cup. Easy to put away in a container to use again. Now, years later we are in lockddown so school has switched to online. Now he wants to always homeschool all the time so we may go that way in the new year. Really helps with his sensory issues learning from home but it is difficult to understand all the time. He loves being at home all the time, no socializing, and no noise.

Was homeschooled from 2nd to 8th grade (7 to 13 y/o), before repeating the 8th at a cheap, buy private, small religious school from which by I graduated. Don’t know if I have ASD, but this strategy is probably an asset for kids who struggle with complex social environments. Before this, I was, apparently, walking the perimeter at recess. Rather than going mad over the insanity of the playing the status game, I could focus on developing myself until I had something in me I liked regardless of what anyone else felt. An inner confidence that did not depend on peer approval. This, however, didn’t mean I never socialized. Other parents did likewise and there’d be regular meetups. It just didn’t happen at anywhere near the scale that created a Lord of the Flies culture, so I got something close to the best of both worlds.

I'm not home schooling right now but the nursery I take my son to says they can only have him 2 hours a week ( my son is three and does not have an official diagnosis but has a lot of the classic autism red flags) so if he will ever learn new things it will still be from me cause not much can be achieved in one our twice a week. Awesome suggestions, will definitely try ( I especially loved the car through the rainbow rice)

I currently homeschool all three of my kids. My son is severely autistic and was in the public school system prior to Covid. My school district is insisting on all-day masks and there is no safety plan for the autism meltdowns that would be almost guaranteed. I am scared to homeschool my son and have already had an argument with his developmental doctor but I feel like I have no choice. I love homeschooling and have a passion for working with my kids. Thank you for talking about this. I need all the confidence I can get!!

I have a nine-year-old autistic, adhd, ocd and spd daughter. We homeschool and I plan to continue to homeschool. In public school, while she was awaiting tests results and a psychiatrist appointment, she had a meltdown and hid under a table. Instead of allowing her teacher to calm her and see if she could get her to come out, another teacher who did not know what we suspected, calls the resource officer, who tried to man handle her and drag her out from under the table! This made the melt down go into hysteria! I got a call telling me she was out of control and they wanted me to come get her. I get there and she runs toward me and the lady in the office yells at her to sit down and shut up! I told the lady that I had already signed her out and she needed to shut up because I will tell my child what to do at this point! The office lady was mad and mouthy, which made me madder by the second. After I found out what all happened, I told them I was withdrawing her from school and she would be homeschooled. They called me several times wanting me to come in discuss things and re-enroll my child. I said no, you do not treat a child like that when you and the teacher suspect they have some type of learning difficulty. She has done well being homeschooled. However, I do not follow a strict schedule. We wing it most days, depending on her mood, or if she is feeling well or not. She is a visual/hands on learner. So math lessons may be measuring ingredients out and mixing up a batch of cookies, or cutting up fruit and vegetables. She can read well, but will fight you on writing! She loves to tell stories and make them up, but she refuses to write. We are working on it, but it's painful some days.

From my experience home schooling is extremely bad for children with autism, a lot of people chose to have there kid be in home school thinking it will keep them safe from in person school and for sensory issues but when you keep a child safe from things and locked away from Social interaction it will prevent a lot of growth needed and in person school will greatly benefit development and will lesson sensory issues from time and exposure. It’s not the same for everyone but I think it’s really important to try but not give up on it from my experience I didn’t really learn very much and was extremely behind but in public school I went from being super behind to being 2 or even 4 grades above me in certain topics I’m a 13 year old in middle school in a tiny town and I have way less autism related struggles as other people but as a general role please give them lots of in person exposure it’s really good for us.
@dancewithmyshadows
@dancewithmyshadows 2 жыл бұрын
I can see your point, but I disagree with the idea that exposure is the best way to overcome sensory issues. It’s said that psychologists have a difficult time differentiating between PTSD and Autism symptoms in people with autism because they’ve never seen an autistic person without PTSD. I think we need to take note of that, and start rethinking the standard treatment of autistic children and young adults. I was diagnosed in my thirties, and having grown up without a diagnosis I was called lazy, dramatic, selfish, and my meltdowns were treated with punishment. My parents thought exposure would help with my social issues, so they had me in large choir groups where I would be left at all-day practices surrounded my loud strangers. I still have nightmares. While other children might have really enjoyed that experience, it was torture for me. I cried and begged not to go every time and my mom thought that forcing me to endure it would help me overcome my fears. But it worsened them. The approach I’m taking with my daughter is exposing her to social situations and sensory-unfriendly environments in a controlled and deliberate way. I watch her to know when she’s showing signs of overload, and I’m teaching her coping strategies. She’s learned to say “I need a break” and to take deep breaths and play with a sensory toy. She’s learned to say, “I need space” when a friend gets too close to her face. She’s only learned this because, rather than sending her off and hoping for the best, I’ve developed strategies alongside her and prepared her to cope in a way that works for her. When she’s older, she’ll be able to enter those situations on her own with the tools to be successful, rather than find herself in a sink-or-swim situation. I’m homeschooling because I can provide these tools better than a teacher who has many other children to work with and who is already spread too thin and paid too little. I’m in a privileged position to have the time and resources to homeschool. I appreciate teachers because not everyone has homeschool as an option to them. But if one does, and they decide it’s best for their child, I would never in a million years deter them. Even professionals are still in disagreement about the best therapy practices for autism. So in this case, I would trust a parent’s instinct.

I just saw a video from I think the channel is Jubilee. It was about 7 people with ASD and the question was, does everyone with ASD think the same? The people were asked different questions and had different degrees of agree or disagree to choose as how they felt.

My 10 year old is Autistic and we’ve just started home based learning due to threats from the school of fines and even jail time due to his low attendance (78%). Were already home educating our year 10 daughter with adhd and dyslexia. Any tips? Lx

Why do we have to click two links to play your videos. Is it because as mentioned in your previous videos that KZbin thinks Autistic is derogatory and therefore adding an extra couple of layers of protection so that people won't be as easily offended? I have the "condition" and I don't have a problem with Autisic.

Hi, thanks for checking in. I am officially home schooling thanks to all parents, guardians, and teachers my youngest is starting to talk after 10 years he is reading out loud, and he wants every book and magazine he finds. His brother can identify letters colors, and he is starting to make sounds of words I can't believe how much one on one makes a difference. @butterflylady5477
