This was fun to listen to. The idea that public school is new compared to a woman teaching her children from home, etc, was really good. I sent my two oldest to public school for high school and the literacy thing makes so much sense. My sons come home telling me how horribly words are pronounced when read in class, and how terribly they all seem to read. I regret sending them, but my oldest is a senior now and my sophomore son enjoys it. They both have straight As. They say it is because I taught them well when I homeschooled. Probably. Hannah Frankman was well spoken and very well educated. I enjoyed this.

She is so right. Teachers are set up to fail in the very beginning, but we were told that failure is not an option for our students. Behaviors are on the rise, bullying as well, so teachers are having to spend more and more time managing behaviors. In my opinion, public schools will be where working parents have to send their students because they are not able to financially stay home to homeschool. I taught for 29 years as a Special ed teacher and I always recommend Homeschooling if you are able.

One of my most favorite things about homeschooling is that we get to do life together, not separate lives at the same time. My baby and toddler are actually around and play with my school aged kids, they will have a relationship and memories and not be separated all day for years and years.

I help my daughter homeschool my grandkids . One is autistic, mainstream school is just not for her, she did attend mainstream school for a few years and the Australian education department were very supportive. Just too overwhelming for her, very high functioning. We decided to homeschool the other 2. We have has no sickness which is great and the kids are taught to their individual needs . Excelling . Best decision we have made, it is very hard work. No unnecessary fluff mainstream school does. 🐨💗

That's great! My youngest is autistic and we are considering homeschooling him. We are also considering homeschooling my 9 yr old twins. It just seems like they keep falling further behind :-(

@ we were finding the same . The resources and support is much better now in Australia. My autistic granddaughter is very intelligent and high functioning, but the school environment was way too overwhelming for her and she was exhausted by lunch time . We can educate her at a higher level and she is less frustrated. So all 3 kids are homeschooled now, best ever decision 💗

Is it OK to have older kids help little kids with their lessons? One of my kids has learning disabilities so it can take a really long time to get his school done. But my 10 year old finishes her work quickly, independently. Is it OK to have that 10 year old help my kindergartener with her pages. It's really helpful for me, but I don't want to put responsibility on it because it's not her job. Thoughts?? Opinions??

I also was homeschooled K-12, then went on to a private Christian college where I obtained an education degree, and have worked in both public and private education since then as well as becoming a mom and starting the education years of my own kids. Lots of good points here, but also a huge number of blind spots in the conversation. Public education did a fantastic job for many decades. My grandparents learned Latin, were excellently socialized, and well prepared for life with only public education. One grandpa was an oil field engineer after the 8th grade. To say that public education was only received well out of ignorance for what it truly was, is blind to the quality of life it actually bestowed on many people who would have otherwise never been literate or able to rise socially. The biggest challenges I would raise are these: Is the most child-centered education possible going to set that child up well to serve others? And how do you address the question of homeschooling being a far more innovative social experiment (being launched circa 1970) than classroom education? Is the verdict really in, or are only the benefits being discussed because it’s too early in history to see the whole picture?
@atroy19839 күн бұрын
If you think homeschool only began in the 1970s you are grossly misinformed. And it is entirely possible that the quality of education in public schools has made a decline. You cannot compare apples to oranges. These are unprecedented times.

@atroy1983 I was surprised the OP stated this about homeschooling as well. If we really want to get technical, royal families were homeschooled since the beginning of their unity! Their kids were sent off to various tutors to become the ruling successes that they are. For thousands of years, children were always homeschooled. Organized institutions are a more recent thing. And by the way, used to mean that people would come out as scholars. Now college is just for profit pumping large quantities of students out. And we are not seeing anything spectacular from most college grads. It used to mean something. Homeschool in 2025 is the new private school option now (that's how I see it). They really are better off at home than being away all day with peers that are not invested in our kids like we are. Homeschooling isn't easy either, it requires parental sacrifice to be present in the home with their kids. Let's just be real - a lot of parents just don't want to do it so they'd rather point fingers at homeschoolers because they have imposture syndrome.

@@Ana_Cecilia615 Of course children being at home and learning things is an old old concept! But homeschooling as a movement from the 70’s and 80’s does have some distinct (and therefore experimental) qualities. For example, a lone parent teaching while an outside employed spouse is absent during the day. Or the parent being deemed the qualified educator rather than a tutor. And the need to fulfill blanket societal expectations regarding math and literacy at home. All these are unique to our age of homeschooling. Classroom education is very very old as well. The Socratic method was practiced with groups of students and a tutor. Universities and monastic communities have existed since the Middle Ages. The post Industrial Revolution classroom has distinct qualities, of course, such as bells and class periods etc. Also American education is uniquely bad at the classroom experience and it needs to be asked why. There are many countries fairly successful at raising healthy, well-balanced children in classrooms. There needs to be room for nuance in our thinking about education!
@Ana_Cecilia6156 күн бұрын
@@elizabethhorak7284 That's the misconception about homeschool as an experiment or all on one parent. I don't know any homeschool families that don't outsource subjects when the children advance past elementary concepts. There's a ton of co-ops and so many unique ways to personalize an education for your child. If you haven't read, "Dumbing Us Down" by John Taylor Gatto, I recommend it. He gets into the history of public school here in the US and compares it to Europe. That was what convinced me to go ahead and take the path of personalizing my child's education and designing her environment to be peaceful, loving and without the distractions of the peer social hierarchy ranking which deters many from reaching their full potential. High school has long lasting effects on us after we graduate. Personally, I very much hated school and would never think to put my children through a traditional school. There is a major difference in the milestones you can reach in your childhood when you are not in an environment worried about your peers examination of you. Having a safe, peaceful and loving environment sets you up to advance in anything you want to learn. That's my biggest reason I'll homeschool my kids. I would never throw them to the wolves of their brutally immature peers. Children need to be children. We let them go out into the world when they are mature, not when they're young and vulnerable. The issue of bullying vanishes when they're home with you. And that alone is 100% worth it.

As a retired elementary teacher I’m feeling a little sad. I worked with a school full of staff who worked to do their very best. There were so many changes with the internet. We could do some individualizing to met kids where they are at. I would shudder to think of some of my students being taught at home. I’ll just say not all parents can home school.

I used to homeschool, I do miss it all the time, I admire the hard working teachers out there...the ones that care so much for their kids...I pray my kids become men of God, and I try to be supportive of their teachers. Not everyone is called to be a homeschooling mom, but we are the parents and therefore the first educators of our children.
@atroy19839 күн бұрын
Certainly not all parents can homeschool. But I think you’ll find most homeschool parents are highly intentional and want to give their children more than a public school can. Homeschool has so much one on one attention, personalized curriculum and tailoring that a public school could never meet. You did your best for the students you taught but there are other legitimate and at times, better options out there for parents and children.

My 13 yr old has been at secular, private school since pre-k. She is thriving because of smaller class sizes, individualized help, and a structure that does not allow bullying or belittling and strongly discourages social media. My 7 year old is at public school, and it's a mixed bag. They DO already utilize AI, especially for math, to tailor questions and answers to each student. The kids that are doing well have, in general, more financial resources for afterschool play and fun, parents with the time and ability to help with homework. There's plenty of kids at school with my son who don't get anything to eat when school is out. They're eating 3 meals a day at school and when there are breaks in school, they're sitting at home by themselves with siblings. They dread "vacations".

Other than this guest being homeschooled herself she really has no credentials to be speaking about childhood social/ emotional development or early childhood education. Watching lectures online or KZbin videos as a high schooler hardly prepares one to be expert on anything. I have no issues with homeschooling. I think each family needs to make the best choice for their children. However, this guest is making these overarching statements about public schools, childhood development, and what children need and don’t need that are not factual just her opinion as someone who never even attended formal schooling. We need children and adults to be formally trained and educated in many fields- medicine, engineering, and some may even say trained teachers- just to name a few.
@racheln43097 күн бұрын
I don’t understand your comment, homeschoolers can get formal training too…
@ValerieLong-e9f6 күн бұрын
@ sure they absolutely can! My point is that if we want to live in a world where there are doctors, nurses, scientists, engineers and teachers we need people who are formally trained in those subjects. And trained by others who were schooled/ trained in those subjects. For people to work in those fields they need more than play based learning and nature walks. I think homeschooling is a wonderful options for people. I just disagree with this guests views that traditional public school is all bad/ wrong for teaching children . There are flaws for sure in public education . But there are a lot children having wonderful school experiences. This guests views are one sided opinion with no real substance to back it up. And furthermore I think it’s a slight to all the many teachers out there who work very hard for the sake and love of children by someone who never even went to public school.
@jessicamorgan72034 күн бұрын
Amen! The guest seemed incredibly naive as to the life experiences some are born into and very self righteous. Homeschooling doesn’t save us or our kids. I taught public school and have my doctorate in educational leadership… but also have 5 kids, left that world, and homeschool. There can be good and bad to both sides.

@@ValerieLong-e9f as far as I’m aware, 10 year olds are not training to be doctors. Homeschooled kids can choose to go to college so I’m still not sure of your point.

I have mixed feelings about homeschooling. I think it depends on the qualifications that homeschoolers are held to account by states. Some states don't have high standards for homeschoolers and therefore the children don't receive a good education. I have seen people on KZbin that homeschool that have poor grammar, don't know the capitol of Malaysia and joked about it. Also the social aspect I think is important. I know that a lot of homeschoolers have co-ops with other homeschoolers that meet those needs.
@racheln43097 күн бұрын
I’m sorry, your misuse of the word capitol makes your point kind of flop! In addition, a huge number of publicly schooled students (dare I say a majority of them) do not receive a truly tailored, broad, or well rounded education. All kids will have gaps somewhere. Some kids will be “awkward” no matter how they are schooled. But you can’t learn Plutarch or sourdough at school, but my kids do at home!
