Sherry! I just had to come over here and share my excitement for my kids. We have used your Lesson Books, The McGuffey Readers and Gentle Grammar for my 2 oldest daughters for almost 4 years. This year our co-op offered the Stanford 10 test and my 7th grader scored “post high school” for her Language while my 6th grader scored an average 9th grade level! We have occasionally dabbled in other LA curriculums, but always come back to the McGuffeys and the Lesson Books. That said, my older kids are also my avid readers, so I’m sure that played a role as well, but I am shocked that something so simple is so powerful. I first found your videos when I was juggling 6 kids ages 9 and under. What a blessing you have been to our homeschool! We are now expecting #8 and I am excited, not daunted to tach them all.

That is so amazing! I have been so blessed with the McG's--every child who used them has been better off in their understanding of LA. I wish so much that other homeschoolers could discover the genius of these vintage treasures!

I think all your videos are so helpful and practical but as much as I love them, I love your nuggets of pure gold at the end. The Holy Spirit is working through you, it feels as though you took out your Bible and thought about what you should say to me directly. Thank you for listening to the Lord so wholeheartedly! ❤

I recently started my 7 year old who finished the McGuffey Primer and we are doing gentle Grammer 1 through the summer at her own pace if she isnt finished before the new school year she will finish it in next school year. She has enjoyed it so much. She told me she feels more confident. She has asked for help very few times so far. Thank you for putting the time and effort to adapting Gentle Grammer. We really appreciate it

Thank you for sharing the grades of your children and what you're using! I've been hoping to find someone who uses these with highschool children. My daughter is struggling with grammar. She'll be 10th grade this fall
@MomDelights2 жыл бұрын
@@crazychicken4063 No problem! Grammar is best caught, but basic grammar can help. Harvey's is straight-forward, without any frills or politically correct indoctrination, so it's pretty easy to grasp. You can also go at any pace necessary, and then take a lesson and look for reinforcing materials. (Charlotte Mason and Ruth Beechick would have the child copying portions of good literature--we use the McGuffey readers for that).

I love gentle grammar! I have used it with 2 of my boys and through they don't like grammar it's the only program they would work on without fussing and both of us wanting to throw the book across the room. My 12 year old just finished the last book and my 13 year old is almost done. I already have the Harvey's grammar ready to go but came to watch this video to see how to use it and it's exactly how I was thinking too! I myself probably need to go through as well as boys as I struggle so very much through school especially essay writing which is something I'm needing to teach my boys this years. I like the idea of waiting until someone can understand before teaching a concept and grateful to know I'm not the only one. Thanks yall! 😊

I really appreciate you taking the time to make these videos. Your experience and knowledge and wisdom is a blessing to me. I bought Gentle Grammar for my 2nd grader and for my friends daughter. My daughter didn't really take to it right away, but she didn't really start reading until this year. She didn't finish the whole workbook with in the span of the "school year". Now that she is a more confident reader, I believes she will breeze through it now. Blessings to you and your house! In Jesus name.

Thank you for another informative video! My 2nd/3rd grader currently utilizes your Gentle Grammar. What puzzles me about older grammar books such as Harvey's is how to incorporate review, something my children seem frequently to require in order to grasp and apply concepts.
@MomDelights2 жыл бұрын
This is a great question. Actually, Gentle Grammar is not really about retaining the information per se, but introducing concepts which will aid in early writing attempts. The actual learning of the grammar (nouns, verbs, clauses, et al) is for older children who are reading competently and just need some refining of their writing skills. I wouldn't worry about this at the second and third grade levels. These concepts will be used and reintroduced multiple times as they grow, especially if something like Harvey's is used later on.

Hi Sherry! Do you tie in formal writing instruction while using Gentle Grammar? Or do you wait to do that with Harvey’s Grammar?

We have been using your gentle grammar this year and I love it! I also have Emma serls primary and intermediate language lessons that i was given. If we go through all of the gentle grammar lessons do you think that these primary and intermediate language lessons are necessary or redundant? I can’t decide if i need to keep them or pass them on to another family. Thank you for your encouraging videos always 😊

About the time your child is beginning to write fairly legibly and needs to know how to formulate sentences. This can vary from child to child.

I have the Mott media McGuffey readers, books 3 &4. Do you recommend the revised set for my daughter who will be in 10th gr this fall? Other wise I was planning to use book 3 from Mott media. It seems to be a good fit. Also, what lesson book would you recommend to use? I'm also trying to find out what grammar is covered in the Simply Grammar books.. my daughter is struggling with grammar and needs help with the basic parts of speech. I can't see enough samples to know what each book covers. I'm thinking Harvey's grammar may be too advanced? I can't tell. Please help. 🙂

Well, I rewatched your video. I think Harveys grammar would probably be just fine! Lol Still wondering about the McGuffey readers...

@@crazychicken4063 The 3rd and 4th original McG's are not my favorites--although the primer, 1st and 2nd are my absolute favorites for those stages. After the 2nd original McG's, I go to the revised. The third original is not as interesting, and it even gets a little morose in areas. The revised versions are full of interesting subject matter by excellent authors of the time, so they really hold a young person's interest. The original third book also takes a huge leap in reading ability from the last point in the original second book, while, even if you need to skip ahead in the revised book four, it will move more gradually according to the ability of your child. Hope this helps!
@crazychicken40632 жыл бұрын
@@MomDelights if I switch to the revised, what book do you recommend we start with. I had her reading to me from the 3rd book of the original and it seemed to go well. Not too easy, a little hesitating on some of the words, that kind of thing.

This is great, thank you for sharing. Is there only one level of the Harvey’s grammar books?
@MomDelights2 жыл бұрын
Actually, there are multiple books done by Harvey, but only two that are in print--the Elementary Grammar and Composition, and the Grammar and Composition--both published by Mott Media. The latter one is more complex than the former and so I don't recommend it very often, unless you have an advanced student on your hands. It really is almost post-collegiate level. Hope that wasn't more than you needed to know! Just do a search on the Internet Archive site to find more.
