Hi! I just found your channel and I’m so happy I did! I’ve been seriously considering homeschooling (secular curriculums) our two youngest for quite some time. We are also a military family, our children are 7 and 5 years old too. Looking forward to hearing more about your channel.

Also - michel Thomas method is great if you want to really sound fluent. The struggle and demand is higher but so are the gains. I used that to travel solo in Italy and I still remember everything I learned 10 years later

I’d love to see the blossom & root science! We’re currently doing real science odyssey life & like it for all the hands on stuff but I have to add a lot of other reading material. I was looking at the blossom & root Wonders of the Earth & Sky to switch to next. Have you done that specific one from them?!

Oh man I feel you on the secular homeschooler awkwardness in homeschool groups. It can be rough for sure. Outing myself as homeschooler in general can feel isolating when around public schoolers, and outing myself as a secular homeschooler can feel equally isolating around non-secular homeschoolers 🥴 I’ve had to learn which battles to pick, and totally sympathize on not speaking my mind quite as loudly as I normally would to allow my kids to have those relationships. Having a secular homeschool community on social media is super helpful for me so I can vent those frustrations and feel like I’m not such a black sheep in being my liberal hippie self! 😂

The MARC train and Metro are super easy to coordinate and figure out or Metro to Amtrak! That's how we did most of our travel when we lived in northern VA

I am eclectic homeschooler and I always feel awkward talking to others homeschool moms for the same reason. People are very solid in their views. We are still in the same area as you and love it here so so much. We visit other cities often. We do places down in Virginia and have been to Philadelphia and NYC. We are going to Boston, NYC and Philadelphia again in the fall. I have driving anxiety too… so so so bad. I am thankful my husband is around to drive us to places. Once we get there though, we always use mass transit of some sort to get around.

The metro system in DC is fun. I lived there only for a summer and figured it out easily. I commuted from Fairfax in DC everyday for work, and it wasn't a problem. You can do it!

I know here in FL the way around getting groceries on base is to coordinate with a spouse who does instacart or shipt and tell them when your order is scheduled so they can grab it and since they're a spouse they can deliver on base.

The one children's book that comes to mind is Olivia Goes to Venice by Ian Faulkner... my daughter was a huge Olivia fan when she was little and I always got a kick out of the references in the original book series, lol. Also, my sister lived in Italy for a couple of years (she went to university there for a semester and then did WWOOF all around Italy- which families can do, too). She came back and taught my son the song- Il coccodrillo come fa? by Piccolo Coro dell'Antoniano. I still get that song stuck in my head sometimes🙃 but it's cute. And she was able to use it in a joke once, because apparently everyone knows it, and they thought she was hilarious.

I relate so much! We have PCSed 9 time in 12 years with our 4 kiddos! We are also a huge hockey family, secular, my kiddos have all tested gifted and we plan to use very similar curriculum. My youngest two are 7 and 5 also! When we were stationed here the first time we had a pass to the Baltimore aquarium and Port Discovery in Baltimore, we loved it there. We moved back to DC last summer and we haven't been there yet, I need to go! I was going to try River of Voices this upcoming year. I am trying hard to find a history curriculum that goes with this area! So hard to find secular stuff. I almost want to just use an American History timeline and wing it with books and museums. We will also be using MCT, Blossom and Root for Science, Singapore Dimensions Math and Beast Academy. I plan to use the Poodle Books from MCT for my 5 year old. Have you used those? I really like AAR and will be using level 1 for him but am curious how it will pair with the Poodle Books. One more thing! We also LOVE books. I just recently discovered 2nd and Charles. Have you been?! My kids love it there and we always bring home a bunch of books for a good price!

I recommend the Italian film: Life Is Beautiful... But it is NOT for kids! It's a dark comedy that takes place before and during the Holocaust. It is a very heartfelt combination of comedy and sadness... so good! 💖💖💖

I hope you can find a group of secular homeschoolers. I found a secular group once I moved and it is nice to not have to hide the fact I am secular, and that we all have a similar worldview. Being in the DC area, I am sure you have a group, it is just finding it.

In the same boat where it feels like all the homeschoolers around us are religious. It can feel so tricky to navigate.

I would love to see your take on B&R animal kingdom… I’ve been tempted SO many times but worry it’s going to be a basic and not academically minded curriculum. I’ve peeled at a few other B&R options and was unimpressed so it’s interesting to hear you’re loving it! Also, we’re Liberal, academically-minded homeschoolers in San Antonio, TX - I completely understand your feelings on groups. I try to find like-minded friends but always remind myself that sheltering my kids is not the goal, right? As long as the group is kind and there is no talk of craziness I typically feel fine. Things are getting easier this far from 2020 but it definitely has been a rough/interesting last two years. We’re also a mil family, AF here. We were dual military without kids during our time at Fort Meade so I’m not much help in that regard BUT our fave seafood place was LP Steamers in Locust Point, Baltimore and check out Jazz in the Garden at the sculpture garden in DC! You can pack a picnic or buy food and drinks there. I hope you’re enjoying your time, we miss the DMV

Yep, I get what you are saying about being around non-secular homeschool families. I’d recommend being yourself but continue holding back when you aren’t asked something specific. They will start to tip toe away with their kids if they realize you aren’t in their “group.” Let them get to know you first and what a great person you are and then later as they understand you better, they will struggle to judge as harshly. Play the long game just in case you do stay in the area.

That is exciting! Have you heard of homeschool languages? We are currently doing their Italian language and my 8 year old is enjoying it. We want to learn Italian because my mom is from Italy. I feel like I have searched for so long to find a fun elementary Italian curriculum.

Hey guys so since filming this a couple days ago, some things have become less certain about moving. So as of right now we are still planning on moving and continuing to do homeschooling with Italy in mind however if it doesn't end up working out we will just have to take a vacation there or something. haha. Anyway I still wanted to post this because it is accurate to how we are homeschooling and planning to homeschool but maybe I was too optimistic. Thanks for the support!
