Children with Autism thrive on routine. They can also be inherently difficult to teach because they want to do everything their way which unfortunately doesn’t always work. Also be very careful of social isolation. Joseph is already socially isolated, he has no friends, no play dates, attends no clubs, all he knows is his family. When I realised my son had autism at 2 years old I did my utmost to take him to clubs and events with other children his own age, we went to swimming classes, soft play and all sorts of classes because social isolation is a huge problem for those with Autism. What about Toby? He has really struggled with school. I really wish you all the best. Xx

I see your points but it really is dependent on each individual child. My oldest is 17!now and Autistic. He has never been bothered about socialising at all, he is very happy with his own company and things for so much easier for him and m myself when I accepted that. He now has a small group of friends who are amazing and he very much spends time with them when he when he wants to and enjoys his own company outside of that. He is lovely and polite to others when interacting in shops or other public places. My daughter in the other hand who is also autistic is very different and craves friendship but struggles to keep friendships going due to her autistic traits. So we make effort to work on her social skills, have play dates and groups etc but equally she finds it very exhausting so we listen to her and accommodate that. her needs. Socialisation with autistic children is very hard and tricky to navigate, forcing them to do all the play dates, groups and school is t always the right way and we should respect that.

Agree in part about your decision, but you will need to have set times for learning in a setting eg your dining room or somewhere where there is a setting which gives the idea this is learning time. Plus all the equipment to set up a schoolroom setting. A tablet is not the ideal learning tool. As helpful as they are books are important, screen time should be limited for all children. Good luck with your choices.

It would be interesting to see how you as parents are going to be teaching Joseph to read and write. I have a similar aged son and he has come on so much in the past year at school, his teacher is fantastic. Will you take him to home educated activities outside of the home to socialise as that’s also another big part of schooling?

@@Ohhhlalalala i home ed, children age 1, 3, 5 & 13. Regarding reading and writing there are alot of resources online for pointers, we basically do the same as schools, use Phonics, Phonetic sounds, letter tracing, repetitive learning so you practice a small amount of letters and numbers at a time, schools generally start with Satp. But we chose to start with their names, read lots of books, lots of wipe clean books, whiteboards, alphabet videos such as miss rachel are brilliant and my 1 year old can recognise A and will say Ah when he sees A. As for socialising home ed opens tons of potential for socialising as you don't have a time limit, park, softplay, swimming, shopping, football etc possibilities are endless and every opportunity is a learning and social opportunity. My children are so sociable they make friends everywhere they go without trying and it's amazing to see how imaginative and free they are to play without limits.

What a fun introduction to the vlog from the kiddos! This is building real confidence in them. Well done 👍🏼 As for your decision regarding Joseph and the others, keep listening to your instincts as parents. You are both so passionate about the welfare of your children, of your family. That is so refreshing and inspiring. To see how strong and supportive you are as a couple is amazing. As long as you keep communicating and listening to each other, your family will continue to feel the safety and love that’s already there in abundance. Ben, great videography of the beach scene with the children. Those kiddos sitting on the bench just giggling and laughing is something that can’t be bought or replaced. As always, thank you for sharing with all of us ❤

Unfortunately we’re seeing the same things in our socialized healthcare and education systems here in Canada. We feel there is a large push to run these things into the ground so that we welcome privatization. It’s a disgrace and it’s all about money. And it leaves hard working professionals and the patrons of these systems struggling to keep up with an underfunded and chaotic environment. I fully support home school and know without a doubt it can be done thoughtfully and with great care for the individual. Bravo… you aren’t afraid to ask questions and advocate for your children, you will make mistakes, and you will find solutions. I wish you all the best.

Ben and Zoe, I see you have made your minds up about Joseph being home educated, as is your right. The main problem I see is the isolation from his peers. I realise he's got lots of siblings, as we did in our large family when we were growing up, but getting to know other kids was fascinating and fun and got us away from the family for a time. Has Eva thought of studying for the Baccalaureate? I've known people who received a wonderful education through this. I must say, we in Australia were always told that Scotland had one of the best education systems in the world, so I'm really disappointed that perhaps standards have fallen. My grandsons are receiving an amazing education at our local state primary school, academically, artistically and socially; this school is in an average sort of area, not a posh suburb, and we and their parents are so impressed! All the very best with educating the two little ones, and I hope it works out happily!

Well done Erin! 💜 As a long time supporter, I wish Joseph the best with his learning 💙 and you are best equipped to make the decision which is best for Joseph where he is happy and supported. Joseph was excited when he saw friends from the school session outside the swimming pool complex. Perhaps he would thrive in an activity where he can make friends and further develop other skills. Wow!!! You did it!! The decision to home educate was huge for us too, with many heart felt days of talking together. We actually did it several times. One was late starting school, so was almost six years old. The next was withdrawn after a few weeks of year 4, in England, then returning to a new school in year five and starting secondary school in year 7 and then finally withdrawn after two weeks of year 8 for good. It was the restrictive environment didn't work for a person with high functioning autistic traits. It has always felt like the best decision we ever made and feels organic and right. Learning goes on all the time for our whole lives a when we are allowed to follow our interests.

Hi Ben & Zoe- for what it is worth the decison you have made is the right one - my grandson was labelled "a naughty boy" at school because he would not conform to certain things - we as a family requested many many times a test for ADHD but because addition benefits are awarded once a diagnoses has been confirmed GP's/Teachers /authorities all are suspicious of any new requests also the waiting list in my area for the relevant tests is 2 yrs - The system is all wrong & we know our grandson has problems at school/home etc but we are having to pay for a private consultation in order to address his condition

Don't forget in this day and age writing with a pen/pencil is not needed much. My disabled daughter struggles to write so communicates a lot via text, email etc. She also finds talking about anything other than what her interests are, really difficult but, can communicate, age appropriate, via the keyboard. Hopefully he should get a vineland test which will tell you what age he is at for listening, talking back to you and written words etc, I found it really helpful. I always did the ten minute rule so no matter what we were doing we give it ten mins and stop and give her time to decompress. Any sensory overload needs time to calm down, in time Joseph will know what he needs to do to calm down and feel ok again. My daughter has to be on her own for an hour or so and chunters to herself a lot, lol. It calms her. The other good idea is doing a daily routine in pictures. So he can see what is happening visually oh and don't think you need to be doing sit down learning until he is happy to do it. Just roll with it and enjoy it. xx

You as parents know your kids. You can't go wrong because one benefit of several kids is that you really can't spoil them. They will all thrive and you give them room to thrive. None will be lazy or not team players. They've learned to cooperate for the greater good. You will work it out focusing on being kind, considerate, and they will be independent and themselves. It's not cookie cutter, but it works. You will have up and down days. You will take deep breaths or meditate, or what takes you into your essence, at times. Best Regards. You are all thriving regardless❤❤ ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I'm an adult who is on the spectrum, and I found school (both primary school and high school) unbearable because of my autism. Unless the school system caters for children on the spectrum, the schooling system can be very, very traumatic for those of us with Autism. You know Joseph best, and you know what he needs. Keep in mind too, that very often kids with ASD are gifted. He will excel under your loving care.

I completely agree and understand your decision, we all want what is best for our children! My eldest son is extremely intelligent he went through primary school and high school with fantastic grades, he went through university with fantastic results, my youngest is autistic and was diagnosed at age five he didn’t do well at school. The schools here have very small amount of children so he went to extra lessons to learn social skills and many other groups, he was constantly petrified, tearful, and so so upset everyday, the teachers were amazing! He started having panic attacks, depression and was carrying a sick bowl for the journey to school and would often cry and scream for me, it was horrendous, we gave it a very good try but I couldn’t stand to see my son going through emotions he didn’t understand ! CAMHS was great he had to start medication because he tried to hang himself in the garden with the rope from the swing set, he was eight years old, he also believed he could fly so jumping out of windows was also a really dangerous situation, we put locks on every window, he now know he can’t fly! I home schooled him and I got my beautiful boy back. We did study maths, English, science but we also learned sign language and Italian, i was amazed how quickly he grasped it. He is now twenty four he wrote his first book at fourteen and has since written two other books! The museum’s are free for children in wales so we went to study all the museums that were relevant to the history lessons we were covering! We also went on a two day holiday to Tenby, we had so much fun, we have always had a fantastic bond and we still do now he lives at home and I am not sure when he will move out and I always tell him that one day he will be ready and I will be there encouraging and helping him on the next stage of his life, I would love to get him a trained dog but the waiting time is very very long! I am so glad and happy that you have made this decision and I know you will be a fantastic teacher because you are a fantastic mother! ❤❤❤

He's a lucky boy to have a big family who clearly adore him, and who he can play with. I think you've made the right decision. And as you said, it can be reviewed at a later stage if his needs change. You're doing a wonderful job. He's a great little boy.

I think you are doing what you feel is right for your children. And that is what is important. My daughter is autistic and struggled through school and people kept giving me advice, with good intention, to stop protecting her or to let her just put up with things. Which I did and it almost broke her. As parents of neuro divergent children no one has any idea of how you adapt so many things in everyday life to ensure they just get through the day okay. I wish i was in a position to consider at home schooling. It is the right choice for many children and no the cop out society can lead us to believe x well done and keep with your conviction

She has been in such a better place now she hasn’t got the stress of being around lots of people all day. I’m so happy with home educating , and it’s not because I don’t want her to go it’s because she can’t cope. This has not been a over night decision on there part they have Been speaking about it on and off for a very long time, they know there child's limits to things , and I'm sure Joseph Is not that isolated, you don't know what he has in his life as to outside activities, we as viewers only get a snap shot into there lives we not there 24/7, and with such a large family he will never be alone and is always learning new things every day from his other siblings

I would do homeschooling of any child of mine (if I were a parent), if I were highly skilled in time management, organizational etc to accomplish school work online through an online school. My child would probably have a volunteer IEP (Interpersonal Educational Plan) with their teachers because their needs won't get met with thirty students in a classroom with one teacher and a paraeducator.

All in all best of luck in their future endeavors. Erin did a wonderful job with the introduction. Erin, Leah, Joseph, Agnes and Baby Florence did a great job. I'm glad you both have come to a decision, if its best for him and yourself then that's OK, with a grandson who is autistic and non verbal it's hard to get anywhere with tests and the systems, in the meanwhile it's the child in question that's not getting any benefits or help and it's not fair at all, so while Joseph is fit healthy and is thriving within the family environment I don't see what the problem is, and why as parents should you make your child distressed and upset everyday because of the system that don't work for kids that needs additional needs, kids life and society has changed so much since years ago when we and our children went to school, so it needs up dating seriously

You absolutely do whatever is best for your children. I was a special education teacher in the US. My students thrived with routine. If there was going to be a change I would start with reminders etc first thing in the morning. You might want to use a picture schedule to help with change. For instance, put individual pictures on magnets so you can change up the sequence. Examples: breakfast, dressing, bath etc.

My son is 11 now and he has autism and it took 3 years to get him in a special educational school. Mainstream schools 9 × out of 10 can not cope with sen kids full stop and the it's a broken system but at the end of the day us a parents have to make the choice for the child and the family and I love watching your chanel keep positive and it will all work out let's hope fingers crossed good luck.

You are both great parents when my son was at school the first school he was jn he is left handed and he told me years after the teacher put him jn the corridor to do his lessons cos he was left handed so j moved him to a new school cos he was 8 and had a reading age of 5 at the new school he came on going to a special teacher for reading and writing he soon caught up with his class mates I laughed he said when he was leaving juniors to go high school he didn't want to change schools .he's a man now with 3 grown up kids .I think your doing the right thing with Joseph he's got his routine and is learning all the time .oh cookery at our high school is ons big joke they have 2 lessons to bake to prepare snd bake many a time when the youngest grandson came home he sajd what jve made needs going jn the oven to finish off cooking he used to take say a packet of roll out pastry and a tin of fruit to make a pie I went to school in the mid 60s to senior school and we had all afternoon to bake and every week we had to say take flour jn and butter castor sugar and jam to make a sandwich cake and money in to buy the eggs and then do writing and get the recipe for the week after .so I see where you are both coming from how are kids going to learn to cook with ready made ingredients. I was always with my mum baking shopping washing and mum taught me to bake and to cook I made a full meal for the family when I was 11 cos mum worked til 12 on a Saturday she used to dish the dinner out when she got home about 25 past 12 and my brother or one of them made a pot of tea and poured mum a cuppa out when she was coming up the path love to you all ❤xxxx ❤fran❤❤❤

Well done, kids, amazing into the vlog today. Seems like they all pretty much enjoyed the same places and activities ❤. For next year, I wish you all the best to be able to take a week or so vacation to see someplace new or to your home town.😊 Best decision at this time for Joseph. I know the younger kids learn a lot from the older sisters and brothers as well. Everything will come together once you both have your school schedule at home for Jojo. Team Sullivan Schooling.

Loved the children started the vlog off 🫶🏻 Pros 🌟 The live was great as always 🥰 Florence was very vocal bless her 💖 Her speech is so clear 😮 Well done to you both Zoe and Ben 💖💙 I know it’s not a easy decision to make at all 😔 You are making the best decision for Joseph 🩵 His progression is amazing 🤩 You don’t want him to go back but to thrive 😍 Your fantastic parenting it’s a reflection on how well your children are doing 👏 The education system has really changed 🤦🏻‍♀️ I work in eduction so I know 😔 It’s not easy at all. I have a son with individual needs and I’m going through the process for a ehcp. It’s very draining and emotional 🥹 Us as parents try our best to meet their individual needs and support them. I’ve learnt giving them time and patience is key 👍 Proud of you both 💖💙 My son keeps it together at school which is called ‘masking’. He gets home and that’s it, explosion of emotions and very tired 😢 Always here for support 🫶🏻 Ahh bless Florence 😂 “Mummy, what’s happened, it broken, coming it broken”. That is just the cutest 💖 Yummy sweets 🍬 perfect at the beach 🏖️ The sea 🌊 looks amazing 🤩 So tranquil and relaxing 🫶🏻 Thank you for sharing 😘

Best decision you'll ever make. Totally agree with all that you say about the current education system. I also home educate. I had recent contact with my local authority home education team by way of a home visit. Even they were on board with my opinion of the current system. My son's are diagnosed with autism and definitely to not fit into the 'one box fits all' way of learning. Just to add the best advice and support you will receive is from other parents who get it. Many professionals have done all the studies but nothing can give you more knowledge than living this life day in day out. Since our day of diagnosis we have not had any more interaction with the paediatrician. In fact her words to us as we left her room with a handful of leaflets was 'im basically throwing you out to the lions now. Everything is a fight and it all falls on you". She was saying it as it is and totally speaking the truth. We are their parents and will always be their biggest advocates. Happy home edding guys x

Do you know what. I think that is the best decision for them. I really believe they will get so much more out of learning at home. There is one thing I've realised as my children now aged 24 and 21 is that school learning is not necessarily life learning and how to apply it daily. Maths, for one example, is not necessarily taught about how to deal with everyday money management etc. xx

Parents know their child's needs the best. I have home educated my children from the beginning and we feel so blessed. I would suggest with Joseph at his age short lessons of reading and math. Then the rest just explore nature, read well written books and talk about what you have learnt.

Hi guys, at the end of the day it’s totally your decision if Joseph goes to school just now and only you know, as his parents, when and if he will be ready. Thankfully there are options these days. Ben quite rightly has said many times, children can learn so much from being outdoors, exploring and learning about nature. Hope you enjoy the last few days of the summer holidays ❤

Have to say that I agree with your decision not to send Joseph to school. My 11 year old granddaughter is autistic, (newly diagnosed after waiting for one year), and most of her outbursts start when they are going out the door to go to school. I think that no-one knows their kids better than their parents and you would only worry yourself sick, hoping that Joseph is ok and settling. As a mum/gran I can see how sensitive Joseph is and he clearly loves being with his mum and dad and siblings, because they understand him, a class room with around 30 pupils is imho not the place for him to be. He needs to be with those who know and love him. He comes first, not the school. My grandaughter starts secondary school this week and we are all a bit concerned as how she is going to be. Just a wee quick note to add that I took my son and daughter out of secondary a lot earlier than I should have but bullies are not dealt with so I dealt with the problem by taking my kids out of the school. Both my older two grandkids were taken out of the very same school for the same reasons all those years apart..so some things never change! I hope that Toby and the girls get on well in their new school but I think that Toby might be your next child to be home schooled, only because we know he wasn't happy so maybe the move will be the making of him, I hope he gets on ok xxMy youngest 3 grandsons will go to nursery but will be home schooled..xx

I was in the same position with my son had to fight for a year to get him into a special school he’s now with 5 other kids so it’s nice and small and he can cope with that and he loves it . Good luck guys you will do fab ❤

Absolutely you know your children best and have to make those decisions that best suits your children. Autism is Josephs super power. He looks at the world differently. He learns at a different rate. When children are in school that live with autism. It can certainly put him in a box and those ideas of how people see him.can follow him negatively, follow him all his life. Joseph is a blessing to this world. I have worked with children and adults that live with autism. I say he lives wirh autism rather than he suffers from autism as then it implies there is something "wrong" with people who live wirh autism. It is hard at times for him to express his emotions and feelings into words. So, he has those hard days he shuts down . I wanted to tell you. People who live with autism do say tbat certain smells or textures of clothes can make their skin crawl . Often 100 cotton clothes can help assist in not being agitated. Also, food dyes can really affect children. Such as in coke there is carmel that makes children react emotionally to certain foods. It is like a allergic reaction sort to speak. So, spirte or seven up can be a better option. Also, children that live with autism can havd compouding issues such as depression etc. Joseph is very smart and dont let anyone tell you differently. He juat sees the world different and communicates differently and had challenges. I know with sime children one can make up a communication board or in the frisge and if he is having a hard time expressing himself he can use words or facial expressions and give that picture or word that he is feeling. It is called PECS it may assist him in communication. People must remember it is hard to be in his body at times when he canmot exoress himself like others. Akso, if you can predict for him and say if he is doing an activity. Say when the bell rings it is time go to bed. This might assist Josheph on being warned there will be a change of activity

Good for you,i have just deregistered my 11 year old in july,. I sent him to primary school from age 4-11 so 6 years, i'm still on the list for him to be assessed for autism and adhd,he has always struggled and sen always said to me he is fine no problems there were and everyone else could see it but not them,he improved so much during lockdown from then on i thought about it more,he then went back to school but went back to struggling, never liked school kept himself to himself would always say he didn't want to go(i then decided that him leaving primary was best for him), he now asks when can he start home ed as he now wants to learn, he is happier in himself now that school pressure is off him and maybe somewhere down the line he may go back but i don't think he will and that's ok its what best for him now it just took me time to figure out that i could do this for my son.

You should follow what's best for your children. People who have a negative opinion, should not say anything as it has got nothing to do with them. My grandson is autistic and I don't even know what the future will be like for him. I am a teacher btw and if parents want to home school, then good on you. ❤

Have home school children got to take GCSE or Scottish equivalent when they reach 16? I was led to believe they have to but may be wrong. If you home school are there regulations/curriculum you have to follow? I am curious about this if anyone can answer? Ok with little ones but wouldn’t fancy trying to teach teenagers maths or science my worst subjects at school!
