The beauty of homeschooling is that you can use resources to meet your child where he/she is at no matter their "grade level." My son at 6 yrs old started with the Primer and he is still making his way through it in this 2nd half of "1st gr" and working in level 1 lesson book. My oldest daughter began at 6 yrs old in the 1st reader. She is now 8 yrs old in the 2nd half "3rd gr" and she is making her way through the 2nd reader and working in level 2 lesson book. We usually do 1 lesson per week. Sometimes it spills over to the next. No worries, they just pick up where they left off.

I love how much evangelizing these readers do. What a great way to order your child’s affections toward God! Thank you so much for sharing how you use these. I would have never understood how to use them effectively if you hadn’t shared your experience and the lesson book. ❤️

Yes, these are such a great tool! I understand because I was utterly clueless at first, too. I prayed and God taught me so I could pass it on to others :)

My oldest is in 1st grade this year and we have been using the level 1 book since August! It is her favorite thing we do, she calls it her monkey book! She fell in love with McGuffey's in kindergarten, so adding this to it was super helpful! And coming from a little one that hates worksheets and book work, I was thrilled to have found something that she loves to write with!!! Thank you!!

These videos are so, so helpful, Sherry! My kids love the stories in the McGuffey's and the values and morals taught in these books are priceless. I appreciated the tip on the lefty and righty. That will be much easier for my little lefty. I've been anxiously awaiting the upper-level video since you started the series. Can't wait for that one! You touched on it a bit, but I'd love to see a video that explains how to use the weekly words to teach grammar rules.

Thank you for your input, Jill! I am currently working on a complete spelling curriculum (calling it "Logical Spelling") that would help explain the things important to go over. It will be free and for print, of course, with video explanations. (prayer appreciated :) )

Hi there, I'm wondering do you know of a resource that can guide you in the "rules" to teach to a child? For example you said the soft sounding c preceding I and e. I wouldn't know where to even start when it comes to patterns and such. Thanks.
@MomDelights9 ай бұрын
Sure! I actually have a free reading program on my website, MomDelighrs.com , as well as a free spelling program. Both should be on my freebies page.

What do you do with the sentence section in Book 2. Could you walk through the level 2 book please?

Thank you so much for these invaluable videos. I have a little one that just loves to draw and write but is just beginning CVC word reading. We are using your reading lesson cards and phonics program. Do you think I could use the lesson one book with the word cards kind in the same manner as the McGuffey? Do you have any suggestions for resources for art/drawing for those artsy types?
@MomDelights4 жыл бұрын
You certainly could use The Lesson Book for that. My suggestion for artsiness--give them loads of materials and let them create :)

Thank you for the video! As for the word list…so you just talk about the spelling rules? Give a spelling test? Look up definitions for vocab? Or just talk about this all orally and have them record the words as copy work? Thank you for your insight!
@MomDelights2 жыл бұрын
I just talked about the different patterns and rules orally. I had them find the word families, pick out the root words, suffixes, etc.

This will probably seem like a silly question, but I have just started looking into homeschooling my children and planning on starting it this coming fall, so this is all brand new to me. How does the dictation work? Do you read a part of the book and they write down what you read as you read it or are they writing from memory? and if so how does that work with their copy work right next to the dictation? Do you cover that up so that can't see it?
@MomDelights4 жыл бұрын
These are all great questions--don't feel badly, I was more clueless than you are when I started :P You are a very courageous mama and you're gonna do great :) You read the passage aloud bit-by-bit while they copy (best to have them study it with you first so they feel comfortable with it). We do cover the other side up with another book or piece of paper.
@Michelle-gg7hn4 жыл бұрын
@@MomDelights Thank you :-) Watching your video's has helped me a lot.
@Sarah-xy5bg3 жыл бұрын
Forgive my ignorance, but what are you doing for the dictation? Is the parent to read a portion of the reading lesson and have the child dictate from that? What about a child who isn't to read yet?
@MomDelights3 жыл бұрын
Good question! For us, the dictation is the portion the child uses for copywork. In other words, for the copywork the child will copy a paragraph, or number of paragraphs, from their reading lesson. Then, I will read that portion out loud and the child will write it down. Then we will check their writing to see if it agrees with the original.

I'm a little torn if I should keep my 7 year old in the second reader or go back to the first reader. She is on lesson 8, and the vocabulary is getting pretty complex. I skipped the first reader because it seemed a bit easy for her to read. What would you recommend?
@MomDelights Жыл бұрын
You could go back to the first reader, just do the last half of it :)

@@MomDelights thank you, Sherry. That was my thought. I think I just needed a little bit of confirmation. Still building some confidence with homeschooling :)

Hi! I wanted to run something by you. I plan to do the McGuffy reader, along with the lesson book. My question is that I was going to do a spelling program with my daughter that also has copy work dictation and narration. However, I don’t want to overload her with too much in one day. Do you think that’s too much?
@MomDelights Жыл бұрын
It could work if you spread the McG's lesson out--one day read, next day copy, etc😁
@courtneysimon444 Жыл бұрын
@@MomDelights yep that’s what I planned to do 😀. Thank you!
