Thank you for everything you do on this channel Tom. Sharing your experience helps us non-studio players more than you may ever know. I would guess that most people who follow you, will never set foot in a studio, but the learning is invaluable to anyone who wants to make music. It's possible that these videos will influence generations of musicians going forward. I feel like you have cut years off of my journey to finding my own playing and sound and I just wanted to say thanks 👍

Best pedal advice on UTube! Your years of experience is invaluable to me as an amateur! Especially appreciate your pointing out how you need to develop touch before most pedals are actually useful! Saving me untold amounts of time and $ screwing around with expensive pedals I’m not ready for yet! Having mostly played acoustic this electric stuff is still new to me and I’m still working on the touch difference. It’s a whole new world for me! And one hell of a boat load of fun! Thanks for helping me keep it that way!

One thing about copying someones entire board who has less experience playing outside of home is piece-of-mind. "Here is stuff that real people I know say work...and here is the order". "If I can't make it work, it's me". I'm not condoning it, just offering an alternate take.
@Jason-nq2ilАй бұрын
For sure. Great point, I mean, I intend to try alot of the pedals Uncle recommends, because…why not? He’s done the footwork of wading through hundreds of them and found the best. But every player is different, something that works for one may seem trash to another (Frisell apparently loves the Strymon Flint), but I think we can agree that Buk has established a baseline, at least. Somewhere we can start from, and for that, man, I’m grateful. I’m just a hobby player these days, haven’t gigged in years, but I still want inspiring sounds. Now I just gotta save about $300K for a Burst. Then I’ll be happy.
@Henry-pj1tdАй бұрын
Thanks Uncle for everything you are doing, you made me a better guitar player and thanks to all the stuff I learned from you I started being noticed and receiving a few calls here and there as a session player. I must say I'm pretty happy with my live guitar tone and how I sit in the mix but if you could make a video in the future where you explain what you are looking for during the soundcheck in order to get a killer tone that sits well in the mix I would be really greatful

Love when you discover a sound and its clear as day in that moment it works. When I first played a king of tone with a tele through a deluxe (reverb) or tweed it was an instantaneous realization. Same with the lightspeed or even this modded blues driver I have. I feel as players we overcomplicate things often. When you hear it just trust it. For me the test is always live and whatever combination puts me in a clear space in the mix

Tom, you talk about touch being the root of great tone. I've always been impressed by how much you sound like you whether you're playing a Strat, an SG, a Les Paul, your Duesenberg, a Japanese Tele.... You make a compelling example of the "tone is in the fingers" school. Thanks for all the great insights.
@tonyhill1141Ай бұрын
It’s a very deep rabbit hole that gets another level every year with new products. I chased tones for years and built dozens of boards at obviously great cost. Finally my guitar buddy said “You know you tell me this pedal was used by this guy on this record but honestly I never hear that.” So, I just started looking for “my sound” and that’s turned into finding other people’s tone by accident. I just think of pedals differently and it’s made my sound and playing wholly different and more enjoyable.

Amazing as always Uncle Larry!! Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive was the best OD I ever had as a kid and just bought another one for nostalgia purposes. Had that SD-1 driving a Music Man HD130 and 6 x10" Jensen cab from an old Sears Silvertone "back in the day" and it was heavy SRV style tone. Made me rethink using 10" speakers and the bass they produce. Love the triple gain staging and the tour of your pedalboards plural 🤟 🎶

Larry the king, his gear choices and the way he sets it up is straight up with the ears of a producer. That's why it works so well. He uses his od's for gain/compression and knows how to sit the EQ just like on the mixing desk. He just has it dialed in before it even hits the microphone though because he's a wizard.

Thanks for the nod to the M9 - checking into it (idk line6 stuff) I randomly found an online parts store that sells replacement mainboards, fully populated, for what seem like low prices to me. I didn't realize I could actually find official parts outside ordering straight from the company itself; I'm gonna lose a bunch of time today diving on actual internals and components just to feed it into the contemplative back space in the brain (I build/design/develop/deploy a broad array of technologies, when needed).

Your honesty is very cool about your pedal discoveries, the older I get the simpler I get with pedals, the Boss TR- 2 is a must for me also and I run a MXR Dyna comp and verb and have a Delay if I need it, The MXR and my Marshall 2 10 combo (30 Watt) screams bro, using a Strat style guitar or a tele is the shit bro, I find it enough for gigging with a drummer, I have used Dyna Comp for 30 years, it's the only pedal compressor that doesn't have that attack noise biasing the tone, I remember and have tried the old boss compressors that had the switch that leaned either towards bass or treble on the attack, I am sticking with it and the Boss TR-2 . I have had launch pads and DigiTechs and for me, the 2 pedals and an optional old cry baby if needed are it .. I'm old school and that external verb you got I totally get bro!

I like the three-switch pushbutton from a JC-120 in the thumbnail's bottom left. It is and has ever been a good design because it is connected straight through to three individual TS plugs. No exclusive or hard-to-get special connector. I always liked it because you can use any types of simple, regular switches - single, double or triple - for a JC-120. But of course, you can also go the other way round and use the triple switch for any type of gear other than the JC-120. Cool.
