The first time I got to play a real blackface Fender the first thing I noticed was the way it smelled. I remember thinking 'is this what 1965 smells like?'
@501chorusecho15 сағат бұрын
glad you mentioned that yes...all old black fenders have a VERY DISTINCT smell.....totally unlike any other amp....especially after they have been burning for a while.... any serious guitar player knows that smell of a hot fender amp sitting in the back seat of the car as they drive home from the sports bar blues jam trying to avoid the cops why don't old marshalls and old voxels smell like that??? someone needs to do an in depth analysis of exactly what causes that extremely unique smell in old fender amps....is it the glue? that screen?

He said I got it for you, Don. On the way home I called my Mom and thanked her for not stopping at my sister and having my brother David. She said yea, he's a good kid. I can remember taking guitar lessons for the first time at 13 years old. My teacher had 2 blackface twin reverbs, side by side. I never got to play them or hear them. He never even cracked them on once! (Acoustic lessons) To this day, I've always wondered what they would have sounded like! After 30 years of searching...buying/selling different amps, I recently plugged into a 65 deluxe reverb and said "that's it...that's the sound I've have in my head this whole time"!!

Thanks Larry, great stuff! I just sold a buddy my Jan ‘65 Fender Champ, I’ve had for 25 years or so. It is still stock (except the grounded power chord I had added a couple decades back), and though it’s such a basic little tube amp, it sounds great with a Tele plugged straight in. My buddy still does some recording (in Nashville) and will get so much more use from it than I have, just playing it occasionally at home. So I gave him a killer deal (less than half what I could gave sold it for of Reverb), and I can’t wait to hear what he does with it. Though I’m happy he will be putting it to good use, I’m a little sad to see it go. Live that Fender Black Face tone.

The Pro Reverb is all original except for one speaker, which was swapped out for an Eminence at some point before I bought the amp. I'm Blessed to have them both as part of my Vintage Amplifier collection. Thanks, Uncle Larry, for doing this video on these Vintage Fender Amps. When I started playing in bands in 1978 blackface bassman amps (50 watts 2 X12's) were everywhere and could be had for $250-$300. Still a bunch of money for a pot smoking high school kid but they made good guitar amps because they started to break up and like 2.5. No OD pedal needed. I eventually lucked in to a 63' brownface bassman with blonde tolex and still have it today. Brian Setzer amp. It really kills through a Marshall 4X12 from the early 70's. I just bought a 62 brown face online. Foolishly I didn't do my home work and ask more questions about it. I was told people like to take the original transformers and caps out of them and sell them online, replacing them with more recent replacements that alter the tone you get out of them, and also the diminishing the value of the amp. Kind of a boneheaded move on my part. Thanks for the tutorial Tom, I love to hear about the gear you use.

Leo fender said his favorite of all the amps he built was the blackface twin. Of course that was from his design perspective. Buck owens and don rich liked them. The ‘pk’ princeton reverb is nov 66. 220 denotes a jensen speaker and the 6 means 1966. Sometimes when date codes are far apart on the components the amp has had warranty work, you will find two letters followed by 4 numbers stamped in ink on the or inside the metal chassis, for instance ‘rc 6709’ this has been rumored to be the stamp of a regional tech that performed warranty work with the ‘67’ being the year it was performed. I have also seen 64 blackface amps cosmetically restored with the 68 era dripedge/ grillecloth with the same two letter four number stamp

"so what do you do man?" "oh...yeah i own Petsmart....what do you do?" "that's cool man, i'm a lowly studio guitar player in Nashville" there is an EXTREMELY LONG waiting list (i mean DECADES) to even be considered for being accepted as a member....the only reason i ever got to go was because i was playing music....they need musicians, but you have to work while you are there...it's not a free ride all of this horseshit you read about it being some secretive place of evil is just bullshit written by people that aren't cool enough to ever be invited remember that old saying "human beings have a tendency to destroy what they do not understand"?

Ever had one of those fuzzy black spiders jump out at you when flashlighting an open back amp, scaring the shit out you, making you sprain a pinky finger, twist a knee, and maybe, pee a little...? Asking for a friend.

The flags on the Unitas card are exactly the same as on the Scanlen's 1974 Australian Rugby League cards.

I love tube guitar amps. I just wish they weren't so heavy.

I hear that. I've got a twin that I bought in 1976 stuffed away in a closet. Just can't take the weight anymore!

I had a Silver Faced Princeton Reverb and had to sell it back in the day. I could still kick myself in the ass for selling it along with my 62' SG Junior.

Officially into the weeds, '67 Nov. , My theory is capacitor, resistors etc bought in bulk, batches. Some batches closer to spec or not.

Hi Tom, I know you are not over keen to talk about gear all the time but is there any chance you could give us your opinion on contemporary guitars (in production now) that you rate and maybe would consider using at work ...in a future episode possibly?

*in the voice of Fozzy* Little known fact, the Twin Reverb in fact only has one reverb. Whacka whacka whacka!

I had a 1967 Pro Reverb (original owner) - $240! Damn, I wish I hadn't traded it for truly terrible Gretsch 6120 w/D'Armonds - I ran back to the store to reverse the mistake, but the amp was gone in a day! I saw your Twin was on 7-1/2 volume (ouch!!!!) that's gotta be loud, man!

That's like top trumps for amps . What are your thoughts on 3rd Power Amps ?

Tom can you do a video that clearly shows that these very expensive vintage amps are better than my Fender Digital amp that says I have all these amps plus effects?
@johnsmith-bk4ps4 сағат бұрын
@ jrdubay1169 my pal gets killer tone with his digital amp, he runs a line out straight into his 64 deluxe reverb,

What do you think of Super Reverbs Larry? I don’t recall seeing you with any on the channel over the years. I have a ‘66 that is amazing.
@501chorusecho14 сағат бұрын
I’ve owned piles of them over the years…good amps but not as good as a pro reverb for the type of gig you would use a super reverb on
