Hi Tom, I can relate to trying to learn things as you get older. I'm 56 years old and I've been wallowing in mediocrity on the guitar for almost 40 years. I never had that cool neighbor or cool kid in school that could play guitar and I could lean on to teach me. Thanks for being my cool "internet" neighbor. I've learned more and improved more just by watching this series. It's been invaluable not just in my playing but in my enjoyment with life. Thanks Uncle Larry!!

Same here too, David. I’m 66 and been hacking around with a guitar since I was about 14. I’ve had spells of serious practice and then not so much so, but Uncle Larry has sparked something that just won’t go out and it transcends guitar playing and music...if that makes sense. He’s by far my favorite uncle; I think so for a lot of others, too.

How we learn to play is by internalizing the guitar fingerboard. Most of the folks I know - have become students of their instruments - there is so much to learn just really internalizing the major scale!

The comment on memory is so very accurate, it impacts me badly at 35 after 4+ years of chronic pain from a spine injury, after the most recent surgery that didnt go as planned ive lost about 25% of my guitar ability and theory in the last few months, makes playing regularly even more important. Accorging to my pain management specialist & psychologist its like accelerated aging of the short and long term areas of the brain. On the upside im starting to forget how to give a fu*k and just have fun :P Walk to your own rythm & keep playing that beautiful music man, its very inspiring :)

I love your education to me it is the best part of playing the learning. when I learned that I could play a chord anywhere on the neck it was like the greatest . So anyone who says that they are bored with your channel they don't have to watch it they should start their own channel and pass that knowledge on to others. It's so important to not lock yourself in a box in any aspect of life. It is so hard to hear someone say "I'll never be _______." You are admitting defeat before you even start. I have a sign posted on my wall that says "If you say 'I can't', you probably won't." The key is finding the thing that arouses your passion. If it is guitar, or sax, or cars, or creative writing, or painting.... and since Tom mentioned it, chess. Whatever it is you are passionate about, chase it and don't be your own worst enemy by saying "I can't." You can if you want it bad enough. There's a guy in my area, and I don't know his name, who plays in a lot of bands. One week I saw him on a Wednesday in a rock band. Then I saw him Friday in a country band. Then I saw him Saturday playing behind a big band singer. And he killed it in all 3 bands. Can you imagine the amount of time he must spend on guitar to play those three different styles on almost back to back nights...? Can you imagine the tape loop in HIS head! LOL!!

I love everything you do but, especially Billy G, Ed King or any Skynyrd. Imagine you lose Ed King only to get Steve Gaines. I always admired Allen and Gary for always hiring (as their 3rd guitar player) someone who might be considered better than them. No ego! In fact it continued in the Rossington Collins Band. They hired Barry Harwood who was a badass too Check out the solo in Primetime I could definitely hear you playing it Keep posting! Hey Uncle Larry! Just had to say that your “philosophical” take on things in this lesson was just as valuable, if not more in some ways, than any guitar lick you have shown us. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love all of these tasty-ass licks, but for a lot of us guitarist, the psychological stress we put on ourselves to amount to some unknowable level of expertise can keep us from ever actually enjoying what we do. Sometimes we need to see the raw metal behind the chrome to gain perspective on where we’re at in life and our talent. It’s hard to understand sometimes that you can always strive to know more and to be better, while at the same time be happy with what you have and where you’re at in this moment. I teach guitar for a living and I need to re-learn that quite often. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and talents with us. Cheers!

Yep, I "know" the CAGED system. It has been helpful for learning some rudimentary navigation around the fretboard. And because of that I was able to follow Uncle Larry's Mutated CAGED System (TM) pretty well. But if there's one thing this channel has taught me it's the difference between "knowing" something well enough to pass an exam, and having it become part of you so you can create the magic that we witness here. "Gotta do it over and over ... and over." These episodes show me that it would be worth it to put in the effort, and for that I can't thank you enough, Tom.

Hey Tom, thanks for the honesty. A word of encouragement on your chess progression. In 2012 I had a stroke, all I wanted to be able to do was play guitar and ride my motorcycle. I tortured myself for the next couple years because I wasn't who I used to be. The truth is, by having to find a new way to do things caused me to see things differently. That simple view change has opened up an entirely new way of doing things. I'm 56 years old, been playing guitar since I was 5 and I'm happier about how I play now far more than when I was killin it on stage in my young day. I appreciate you because of your honesty about playing. Never give up on being a master player of chess because you are already better than you think, you just want to be better. That's the best place to be man. Creativity comes from the new, not the old, but just because we get old doesn't mean we lose that creativity.

Tom! Thanks so much for trying to explain what’s going on in your head when you play. I’ve been, in my opinion, a mediocre rock and blues guitarist for over 40 years. I’ve been bored with my playing for a long time. Last year, just before I found your channel, I decided to buy a book and learn some jazz fundamentals. One of the very first things covered was triads and inversions on every set of strings. The emphasis is on knowing the notes and knowing the intervals, everywhere. Things are starting to fall into place and I’m having fun again. Home Skoolin’s been a big part of that so, again, thank you. By the way, I’ve watched every single video on your channel. Nice job on Jeff’s version of “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat”.

Play a bar chord, for example A major. Then, starting with the G string, pluck G,B, high E. There's an A major triad. Then, do it again, this time pluck strings D,G and B. Another A maj triad. Finally, pluck strings A,D anG. Another A maj triad. Now think about comfy finger positions to play each triad. Now repeat for minor chord. It's one way of 'separating' the sets of triads.

Now that sweet Cmaj7 lick I know sounds incredible over E minor. And that same lick sounds incredible over G6. I got instant mileage from that one lick. Thanks for the inspiration!

I've been enjoying these snow episodes until i suddenly developed the unshakeable idea that you've actually gone all Jack Torrance in the Overlook hotel and we are watching you talking to Lloyd the bartender whilst sipping imaginary rollings rocks in the garage. All work and no play makes Tom a dull boy.....thanks for the amazing videos this year my good man.

Late Bloomer Buk! Thanks as always brother. I am listening to a lot of different guitar theory stuff lately. Your take at it threw me initially on ep. 93 - which is great. It means there is always more work to be done. CAGED, Triads, Chord Structure - it's all out there. Learn it, disregard it - whatever. Your playing inspires. By the way, Jim Brown is 85 today.

Thanks for not making me learn a million chess openings before giving out all these golden lessons. I started playing guitar relatively late (age 30) and I am striving to learn all this stuff, and I therefore very much appreciate this channel.

Just took me back to the '50's as I was being raised in texaa. Sounds of the Grand Ole Opry, Porter Waggoner Show. You're such a wealth of musical knowledge. Absolutely LOVE your channel.

Hey Tom - Tom Quayle looks at the fretboard a bit like you described, but he focuses on the root, and then explores the scale as it relates to the root in the various positions. I play the chord transcribing way, and it rocks but made me think in boxes. When I looked at just roots, and just (for example) all the thirds in range, my music bloomed! Nothing but roots and thirds up and down the neck - I was on fire 🔥 relatively speaking.

This cracked me up. I’m 61 and have decided I’ll finally become a “real” guitar player. Being semi-retired I’m now practicing 3 or 4 hours a day and loving it! The mind may be less of a sponge but my heart and tenacity make up for it. It’s now just a race against arthritis and senility 😂. I recon by 65 I’ll be pretty tidy but who knows, the journey is where it’s at. Thanks for the inspiration uncle Larry. You speak with truth and wisdom my friend. 🙏🏼

Been playing for a while, based in just feel in learning licks and bits of solos I want to sound like. Listen a LOT to what I want to play like. And its gotten me to a place Im having fun playing and enjoying my playing. But since you started making videos its helped me connect dots on things I should have learned at 15. Appreciate big time.

Hey Tom I thought I heard some Leon Mcauliffe changes right before the "pick a key" section. Man this stuff has been a great place to get lost. Thanks for all you do

Sounded like Bob Wills in the intro there or Ray Benson...I love how steel licks make everything sound like Hawaiian jazz
