ABOUT
I'm Shayla, an earthy mountain mama to 6 wildlings, & a blessed wife to one since 2004. We're a big, Jesus loving, God fearing family & we love to laugh! Hubby & I are second generation homeschoolers, & have been homeschooling our children from the start-since around 2009. We were raised unconventionally, and our parents utilized homesteading before it was trendy, and it was a goal and dream of ours to do the same-but it's only been recently that we have been able to bring this dream to full potential. Last year the Heavenly Father brought to life our dream that we've had for over 25 years and enabled us to begin buying a mountain homestead fixer upper, so join us in the adventures and fun here at our new homeschool/homestead! Be sure to subscribe. In 2023 my goal is to upload once a month.
Video's you can find here that I enjoy creating include;
+ homestead & homeschool vlogs
+ homeschool mom day in the life videos
+ curriculum reviews
+ boho home decor and fixer upper videos
+ eco friendly clean with me hacks
+ grocery & + Azure Standard Hauls
+ Cook with me vids
+ big family living
+ adhd homeschooling support
+ open talk about living & parenting with anxiety + auto immune disease
+ homeschool mom affirmations, motivation & encouragement
+ home organize with me videos (including homeschool organization vids)

As to the “how do you do things with kids around?” question, I wanted to add some encouragements for young moms… I think it’s difficult to imagine getting things done if you have lots of of littles because they have an abundance of immediate needs. If you keep being faithful, they do grow and come to understand their importance in the family’s work. Once they’re older, they have eyes to see what needs to be done and they take on a greater role which frees you up to take on more. The early years are really about loving them, feeding them, keeping them safe and patiently helping them create habits that will serve them later on. I can do far more now with five kids (aged 6-15) than I could with three kids under 5. Keep on training them, knowing your labor is not in vain. God is faithful in parenting too.

This comment is balm to my soul, so encouraging. God blessed me with the most strong-willed son (4y.o) and for two years now I cannot see the light at the end of this stressful tunnel. But I can only rely on hope and faith that he WILL mature and WILL stop driving me up the wall lol

I love this video! So much inspo and very relatable 😊 I definitely feel like we have gotten into a good morning rhythm and homeschool routine. Last week though, my son broke his arm 😢 and we were totally thrown off. Still feeling tired trying to get back into a routine. This video is helping soothe my nerves 🫶🏻

I'm so, so sorry to hear your son broke his arm, Abbie. How traumatic for you all, I'll be praying for you all! I hope he's not in a lot of pain. If you had a good rhythm before, it will not be as difficult to get back into it as it would be had you not had a rhythm yet. It's just going to take a lot of determination, which is hard! Also challenging is going to be that the rhythm may need some adjusting now. In my 14 years of doing this there is ALWAYS something to come along like this that throws everything off. At times I felt so alone and singled out, like God wasn't protecting our homeschool. I honestly don't think it was until I started this channel that I myself realized I was not alone in this, and that He was showing me it was all going to work out because we have sought after Him and are trying to obey Him, therefore He is for us and it will work out because of HIM! I don't know if that will encourage you or not, I hope it helps. Prayers for you.

I’ve taken down Christmas decor as I put up Easter decor and I’ve removed easter decor at Christmas so I understand. Sometimes I want to put a bit of every thing up that will represent the whole year in one go!! People admire it and at least I try!!! So don’t worry if it doesn’t work the way you imagine!!

No more plates please. I have way too many as it is. LOL I absolutely love the mason tops fermenting items. I have used them for years. They have changed the shape of the glass weights and I think it was a change for the better. We eat a lot of fermented foods. One book that I have been using a lot I found at the library of all places. So thankful for that - The Self-Sufficient Fermenting . We have tried several recipes from it. It also has recipes for sourdough, yogurt, cheese and more. Haven't gotten to those things yet. Yes yes and yes about involving your kids. This was a hard one for me at first, I wanted it done my way, faster... then that isn't allowing them to learn, bless me, spend time with me, or develop some new skills. It has become so special the more I invite my kids into something that I am doing. It is so wonderful how God shows us this is so important and bonding. Thanks Shayla!!! So powerful. Keep the reminders and new things coming. I always love seeing what you have posted. I always watch all the way to the end and all the way through!!!

It depends on the kids. My child with ASD and SPD actually eats a lot of different foods, including zuppa toscana. He does pick up random versions from time to time (he's never objected to diced tomatoes until this year - he's 9). Leaving things in larger chunks is a good idea! Alternatively, if you simmer it forever and then blend it thoroughly, it may smooth out the texture enough. Experiment!

The only holiday I worry about decorating for is xmas. My house is full of the things I love to have out all the time; my great grandmother's dishware, sewing items, crocks, mason jars full of canned goods, baskets of eggs, etc...AND I do not have any storage area of any kind. No dry cellar/basement, no attic (in my 1700s house there were only crawl spaces...uuuggghhh & we took them out, mostly) there are not even closets, really. 2 bedrooms have tiny closets. They used armoires & hutches, which I do not own. I have very little cabinet space. So once I would go to change out decorations, there was nowhere to store the other stuff. And then we had a very traumatic experience. One of my girl's friends gave our house bed bugs, 9 years ago. I say, traumatic because we literally set fire to (or threw away) most of our belongings. In an old house, bed bugs can hide ANYWHERE & it is very hard for pest control co. to eradicate them. We had a house FULL of stuff that could not be washed/dryed on high heat or sprayed with their chemicals. We literally opened the upstairs windows, tossed most of our belongings on the yard & burned them for 4-5 days straight. I am trying not to cry right now. We spent thousands of dollars trying to deal with this, all while trying to homeschool. I could not open any books or supplies or get to any of my records. I kept fibbing to the school system to keep them at bay while we dealt with this situation. Holiday stuff? gone, except for tree ornaments that could be washed/treated. It was like choosing to have a house fire, it was such a surreal situation. After that, I was so grateful the have the items that were still left that I never bothered with decorations again. It is sad but, we actually gauge time by "before the 'incident' "(which is what we refer to it as) or "after the 'incident'". 🙁

I love your channel! Quick tip for those hot jars, when you go to put the lids on and tighten them wear a pair of rubber gloves. I usually use the ones I use for cleaning, they are heavy enough to make the jars easier to hold and not burn your hands.

I have been desperately searching for a planner that allows for MANY students and also MANY subjects, because even though language arts is one subject, it has a zillion components that I have to write down and remember. Is your planner going to allow for that? I haven't found anyone whose planner allows for 4 children with MANY subjects for each child.
