Use the tin you took off the roof to make a tray for underneath. It's already the right size. Make a wooden frame for around it, put some casters on it and wheel it out when you need to clean it off.

Dad had mounted a multiroom purple martin bird house on a slick galvanized pole about 16 ft. high with two galvanized clothesline wires stabilizing it to the barb wire fence supporting it. Purple martins were raising cane one day at a chicken snake trying to come back down one of the guy wires. It was full of baby martins and bird eggs. Mother nature's animals are amazing. Take care and I enjoy the videos. Central Texan here.

My grandfather's cousin raised quail in the 70's in the state of Georgia. He would raise them until they were big enough and then release them into the woods. Watching this video brought back the memories of going to his house with my papa to see the baby quail. Love the video. I'm glad you're feeling better, Jim !

Concerning the floor, while airflow is nice, eventually there will be enough poop and scraps to fill up the airspace under the floor. It will be a perfect place for rats and mice to live and breed. Cover that floor with linoleum or something easy to clean.

We used an old tray from a dog kennel. Beautiful quail never raised them before. 👍
@mamich084 күн бұрын
You could use 1/4 inch wire screen on that floor. Still allows air to keep floor dry and will prevent most rodents and snakes. And Gus will still have one or two to play with when he isn't tipped over.

We have prairie rattle snakes here in Southcentral Kansas on the farm. We buy snake be gone at Home Depot, scatter a thin line around dog pen, and door ways, and this stuff works. We have had them up by the door, and in the last 4 years now, haven’t seen them around where we put it down.

I'd put that hardware cloth on the floor NOW! I've seen where rats have taken toddler turkeys. They're a lot bigger than baby quail. Rats can get in there and devour them. 😊❤

I raise couternix quail. I love them! It takes approximately 3 quail eggs to equal 1 med size chicken egg. They are very easy to butcher too. We raise ours in an aviary style coop. Also, they only need a heat lamp when they are new to about 3 weeks.

Our family raised chickens for eggs or for butchering. Each year we usually got 100 chicks. A part of the machine barn was housed off to a large pen which had a small doorway to a large outside pen area where the chickens could be outside. The inside pen was a cement floor for easy cleaning, with new straw placed. 😊

I would go under or even skirt the coop with hardware cloth the kind that is sharp and cant be chewed dont want chicken toes caught on top of that floor. Or could thro down a piece of plywood with deep bedding on part of the floor so they can get away from leg snatchers and still do some scratching

I'd suggest building a shelf a few inches below the cage and sliding a tray(s) onto that. Then, you can slide the trays out and hose them off. If you go with a three foot drop, you'll end up with quail poop three feet away in all directions.

Hate to tell ya this... If you think chickens won't roost on top of the hardware cloth... you are wrong. Had a hoop house that we used as an outdoor run. Whenever one got out, guess where they slept... RIGHT! On top of the hoop house. They had clipped wings so it was really funny to watch them jump as high as they could, grab hold of the walls, and scramble like their heads were off until they managed to get on top. And there they slept all night...

Wow I didn't think we had coral snakes down here in Louisiana!!!! For under the qaul cage, get a metal tray angled back to a gutter leaning to one side and a poop chute going out the pen. This makes it easier to clean out. Even can go full fancy hootis on it and have water nozzles already on top side of the tray hard piped to the water valve then simply turn the water on and off!

Guys, those look like Pharaoh Coturnix Quail. Some people back home in Louisiana call them Chukars. They are not Chukars.We used to have about 200 of them. They laid 75 eggs per day. Lots of pickled eggs, give away eggs and hatching eggs. I would not wash the quail poo from underneath the cage. You are going to make a ton of ammonia doing that. I would put a metal tray that you can slide out from under it and then use the waste for fertilizer in your garden.

Hello Jim and Lydia Those are some good looking qual, I'd put a small tarp down asap. At least you could swap them out while cleaning till you get a more permanent solution.
