Every house built should come with a water cooled and propane fueled whole house backup generator, a full array of solar panels, and a freeze dryer, a high quality unit that would last you 20 years, because buying those items individually is so freaking expensive, you really need to roll them into the cost of a new house.
@Bozemanjustin3 жыл бұрын
What if you live somewhere that solar doesn't make any sense? Some places don't get enough sunlight and other places the electricity is so cheap and plentiful, the panels would never pay themselves off before they were useless. Also, what if you live somewhere that a generator doesn't really make sense? In South Florida a lot of neighborhoods have their power lines buried because it makes them stormproof. If you live somewhere that never loses electricity. It would take the power company not being able to purchase fuel to stop your electricity.. and if they can't get fuel then you can't get fuel for your generator. At best you would be buying yourself a few days depending on the size of your tank. Lastly. There are people who are just never going to preserve their own food. They're not producing any of their own food. So unless they go to the store and buy things , to just then dehydrate them and then store them, it doesn't make any sense. Once again if stores don't have food, you only have a small amount of time, before you're out of it. And God forbid, the people in your neighborhood, figure out you have food, when they run out. So in reality you should have included all houses should come with a fully stocked armory as well, to defend your resources when others are without. Because like Bill Burr the comedian says otherwise you're just collecting supplies for the toughest guy on the block
@mariedeyo73993 жыл бұрын
Everyone needs to do as they need it, but it is time to go to more solar, water and windcraft. And it is always good to know how to grow and store food. Always in the way it is right for the place you live in. Some would not be so careless with everything if they had to grow it them selfs.
@richardmartin26463 жыл бұрын
I understand totally what you're saying, I can't rely on electricity where I live. So freezing anything is out of the question for me. But FYI during the great depression in North Central America in the 30s it wasn't the zombies you had to deal with it was the government they took your silver, they took your gold. I don't know if you're like me I can't afford an armory that'll hold off the government. But I can deal with a thief or two.

We freeze our cows milk in extra jars placed inside zip locks(incase they break, then reuse the bags for the next batch). If you leave an inch or so of head space it doesn't break, but still good to do to be safe. And do not screw the lid on tight just incase it expands more than the head room given. We freeze it unskimmed (sometimes our girl gives us >30% cream), defrost in the fridge the day before use, then place in the blender on high until combined. The blending combines the fat and skim milk wonderfully and tastes nearly as fresh as it does from the cow. It will froth a fair bit so leave ample headspace. We cannot afford a freeze dryer in the near future and really do not like plastic (that isn't HDPE or P.P.) touching our food. This has worked great for us so far. @jessicahealey75992 жыл бұрын
@@chera3467 I had that happen to me a couple of times (with milk). As far as I could tell it was always due to not leaving enough head room. If it's nearly all water (chicken broth, milk) it could have expanded more than expected. Just a drop too much is all it takes. Maybe leave an inch and a half and see if that's better? May I ask why you are freezing the broth if you've already canned it? If it's to preserve the broth and they're in jars but not pressure canned, try leaving the lids loose to allow escape if it's too full. One could place in a pot or big container to catch any liquid that drips. If they are properly pressure canned, you shouldn't need to freeze them. Hope this helps!

Couple things, first, if you put the trays in your freezer and fill them you can pre-freeze and shorten the cycle time on the dryer. Second, if you take the rack out of the dryer, flip a tray upside down and put the jars in with the rings loose close the door and go in to the test settings you can test the vacuum pump and get a lot more air out of the jars than the jar attachment for a vacuum sealer.

@bossymodo Жыл бұрын

The very best way to store fresh milk is by pressure canning. Fill your jars just as would with any canned produce, seal in your canner, bring the pressure up to 12 lbs and IMMEDIATELY turn off the heat. Let the milk cool completely inside the canner and you're done! The milk will keep indefinitely in your pantry, and it tastes exactly like fresh. It will not taste like store bought canned or condensed milk unless you over process it! Of course, just as in canning anything, you must be sure the individual jars have sealed properly, but by following the correct technique, this won't be an issue. I have canned GALLONS of fresh milk over the years and have NEVER had a single failure...in fact, I am just finishing up using goat and cow milk that I canned 4 years ago...it's just as fresh and delicious as the day it was squeezed from the udders!

This video could NOT come at a better time! We finally bought our own Harvest Right, as a means to put away some of the food we grow that isn't as suitable to canning. We thought it might help with extra eggs. (Though we just had a severe heat wave go through and sadly lost over half of our birds despite all our efforts to cool them. So maybe it won't be an issue now 😭) We have very limited pantry space, so anything that can be stored elsewhere is a help. We have a deep freezer, but after a problem last summer caused us to lose a bunch of time/hard work and ultimately food and money, we knew we had to find some other options. If drought and other costs keep increasing, a food loss like that again might mean big trouble. And we certainly couldn't take frozen food with us if wildfires got worse this year and we needed to evacuate. We don't currently have dairy animals, and with the size of our place we'd be lucky to have a couple goats or sheep, but knowing that we could preserve the milk long term (and still enjoy it, lol) definitely makes a difference in the pros/cons of evaluating if it's feasible for our family. Please keep the freeze drying videos coming! Thanks for all you do.

Same with meat. Raw meat doesnt do well, cooked does, but in small chunks with large surface area for quick rehydration. Also, things that are high fat like peanut butter or chocolate, or high sugar like honey or syrup dont freeze dry well.

Well at first they picked the one in the middle. Wasn't that one marked '1' (unless the other mark was turned away). So they picked the fresh and the freeze dried, though one one girl picked what I thought was the frozen on the far left, whose number you could not see.

It's funny I've actually considered moving out of state more than once this year just because I can't buy raw milk in my state. It's illegal

Can you buy into cow shares?
@CelticLady013 жыл бұрын
Here in Kentucky you can buy a share of a cow or goat and get part of the raw milk.

What state? It is legal in my state as long as you buy a raw milk share of a dairy cow. This is in Virginia.
@fullofgracehomestead3 жыл бұрын
Research if farms have cow shares. You pay for them to take care of the cow, the milk is free.

That is useful and it could be used to freeze-dry other products as well yet I need to see the price of the equipment and the energy use of it.

I freeze mine (after I have made the cheeses) but I have dairy goats with VERY sweet milk (read: no 'goat taste') Because of the different composition of goat milk , it freezes MUCH better than cow (still love good raw cow's milk) I have frozen goat's milk for up to a year with no ill effects ('lost' a bag in the depths of the big freezer) That surprised me. One day, would love to get a freeze dryer, but it hasn't risen to the top 10 must get priorities yet.

I freeze milk at our beach home often. I hate wasting whatever we had left and we go there often enough that it does not get too old in the freezer.

We make homemade ice cream and freeze that instead of plain milk

You should be weighing each tray to make sure it’s totally dry and all the moisture is removed. Just because it looks dry, doesn’t mean it is. You may find stuff that went bad because there will still moisture in the milk.

When I was aged 10-13, we lived in Bangkok, Thailand. My dad was in the Air Force. The only milk available at the base commissary was dried,..yuck!! Or, cans ( like orange juice cans) of frozen milk! That was during the late 60's. It was skim and watery, so I always added quik or Hershey's. Lol

Question: I recently watched a video where the lady was pressure canning butter. I know there isn't an approved recipe for this, but wondered if you have tried it. Does it change the flavor a lot like canning milk does? She used just some Great Value brand butter, but I'd want to use local real Amish butter. Having it okay on the shelf vs in my limited freezer space would be great. thanks!

Homestead Heart! I do not know how to share a link, on utube, on my phone, BuT I'm pretty sure that's the one from ur description👍 My grandmother canned anything and everything!

Why can’t you just heat the butter up and seal it with ghee or lard on top like old fashioned meat pots? It’s just animal fat in the first place. I think the only parts of the butter that might rot is the milk solids, so you could either preserve it as ghee or try to seal the top of the butter in a jar with ghee or lard.

I think they're all fine. Even different brands of store bought milk taste different and some will like one better than the other simply due to their own taste buds.

Since home freeze dryers are too expensive for most of us, You can dehydrate milk using a oven. I hope home freeze dryers will be as affordable as all other kitchen appliances.
@kathygarner4192 жыл бұрын
Freeze drying is a good way to process milk. My concern is with the amount of energy being used by the freeze drying machine itself. Have your hubs get a small device to test the power usage on the unit. We did this and found some surprising devices that we use every day that are energy hogs. We updated some of our appliances for that reason. Did you buy the unit or was it given to you? Last time I checked these units were more than $2000+ to purchase. That price puts these units beyond the budgets of most folks.

I heard about this product and heard the CEO on a podcast. I looked at the price and laughed. Got myself some raw colostrum instead from a local farmer. I understand processing costs money but it can't be that much more.
