There is some great information in this video. I am new to grafting and just grafted 6 avocado trees yesterday. I had a bit of an issue with them slipping position so I will definitely try the 'third hand' technic explained here. I also used a different grating style but might try this whip style next time. Thanks for the info! P.S. I love the fruit tree in every yard idea. Everyone needs more local, free, healthy food.

This was the best video on youtube for grafting avocados (should be in the title, but the search engine sorts it anyway)! May I ask a question? My hass graft is 2 months in, still green and if I cut it, there is moisture in it. No buds yet though. Any tips on getting it to bud? Thank you!

I would just wait. Keep taking off growth on the rootstock, make sure it’s watered. Sometimes it takes 3 months.

@@HomesteadinHawaii Thanks for your reply. I got some more scion wood today prior to your reply and cut off the old graft... when I unwrapped it there was little sign of any join happening, so I regrafted 2 🪴 plants. I used a whip graft instead of using a split graft. May I ask, if there are tiny buds on some of the scion wood's old side branches, really close to the main stem, is it ok to leave those side branches cut to about 1or 2 inches long, or will this over stress the scion?

@HomesteadinHawaii
@HomesteadinHawaii Жыл бұрын
The moon plays a part in Agriculture in many cultures throughout history and for many, working with the moon cycles is still practiced. It is said that the moon can encourage rooting and certain times, or leafing out, etc. I would suggest you google Hawaiian Moon calendar, or biodynamic calendar to learn more.

I went back and watched this avocado grafting video and Anthony said he was using Malama avos to use as scions. Malamas are an early fall fruiter in September and October. Is that the only grafted avos you sold? You told me it was a summer fruiter. No biggie though. I am trying to find an avo for all four seasons and graft them on one tree. I have a Sharwill ready and now I can say I have a Malama as well. So a spring and summer avo I will be searching for.
@HomesteadinHawaii
@HomesteadinHawaii 9 ай бұрын
I only had the avos grafted from that video so I guess it was malama, there aren't many varieties that will fruit in the middle of summer, but you might find one. My friends who grow a lot have not found success with that yet.

@HomesteadinHawaii 6 ай бұрын
I'd say a week or so, maybe longer if wrapped and kept in cool dark place?
@maukaman
@maukaman 2 жыл бұрын
Funny, I had learned that the scion should be taken right after the tree finished fruiting and was pushing fresh buds. That always confused me because that’s also when the tree is pushing flowers... I had heard that from Ken Love and he’s one of the experts on the island, maybe I misunderstood his instructions a bit. I’ve been trying to get a few of my trees grafted with sharwil scions but I always miss what I thought was the cut-off time. I’m going to go ahead and try some right now with these instructions and see what I get.

May seem to be a silly question, but why graft? It seemed the avocado plant that you started with was a healthy baby tree... Are you mixing types of avocado plants when you do this?

You do not know what the seedling will turn into. It can grow into the tastiest avocado ever or just a junk, watery big seeded avocado. Grafting helps ensure what you get.
