This takes me back to my childhood! We had Rhode Island Reds as well. Got them through the mail. And I remember my parents installing a heat lamp in the chicken coop to get them through those initial cool nights. My mom had gotten books from the library about how to raise them. Neither one of my parents were "farm kids." They had grown up in a medium sized midwestern city, so when they moved to a house with 3 acres in a more rural area, they had to be self-taught homesteaders. My mom often told the funny story about asking for advice when the chickens got big enough to fly over the fence around their yard. A neighbor told my parents they needed to "clip their wings" -- which meant to trim a few feathers off the end of one wing on each chicken so they would not have the balance need to "gain altitude" to get over the fence. They didn't get the "one wing" part of the instructions, so they trimmed BOTH wings on all the chickens. Since the chickens still had their balance, they could still fly perfectly well over the fence! The neighbor had to straighten them out again on that one. LOL! The next try worked.

I am very reluctant to clip wing feathers on my chickens. Flying is their only escape mechanism from danger. I have been known to cover the top of my chicken run. That keeps predictors out and chickens in.

When we had baby chicks one year my little grandson (I think he was about 4) of course loved them but then he was so sad for them that they didn’t have a mom and dad chicken to take care of them. I thought it was sweet that he was so thoughtful of them.

We put our feeder and waterer up on a brick which helps keep the wood shavings out of the containers. This year we got some day old Buff Orrington's, Jersey Giants , Plymouth Rock, French Maran and Cochin which all do well in our hot summers and cold winters here in the Sierras. All took to eating and drinking easily.

The chicks are so adorable! We had chickens while I was growing up and use to get fresh eggs almost every day. Baby chicks are so hard to resist!! I went to tge farm store this morning for potting soil and left with 5 buff orphingtons and 5 barred plymouth rock chicks and a bag of chick starter, and the potting soil I needed! The store had their chicks 50% off today only! It was fun when my daughters discovered my surprise purchase! Enjoy your new chicks!

dip their beaks in water so they know how to drink. These are SOOOO cute Tessie. Glad you are raising some chickens of your own. It is a great way to break depression too! Don't forget the heat lamp. Make sure they can move away from any heat source if they are too hot. Temps for babies that age are about 98*F.

You’re probably going to need to elevate the water and food on a small block. Our chicks kept scratching the sawdust into the water, absorbing the water . We love our chicks too! It will be fun to watch your chicks grow and to see your first eggs from them!

Just FYI....Dip their beaks in the water so they learn where it is, and tap the food so they know where to eat...I've had chickens for years and this is what I've always done. Love your videos sis
