Hi, I'm an African Brazilian. Makes a video about Brazilian black heroes against slavery. Luiz Gama is one of my favorites. He was the son of a black woman and a white man. He was born free, but his father illegally sold him into slavery when he was 10 years old. He got his freedom, became a lawyer and freed 271 slaves

Juan Garrido is remarkable for having been the first man ever to grow wheat in the Americas. That alone is worth mentioning more so than his military prowess. Estevanico (little Stephen) is another Black Spanish who proved to be uniquely skilled in communicating with the natives in the South West. In general, the status of Blacks in the Spanish Empire was way better than in other European societies in the New World. See Fort Mosé in Florida, for example.

Iberian conquistadors used Africans and indigenous Amerindians in their European conquest of the Americas. Nothing new. Europeans did the same when they used opposing African peoples and tribes against other Africans during Europeans "scrambles for Africa". The unfortunare and misleading thing about this video content is that it points to a few Africans with fates different from those at the more extreme end of enslaved Africans in the Americas and it essentially romanticizes (literally & figuritively) a few outliers as if they were representative of a greater whole. The semantics and hyperbole are misleading. La India Catalina accompanied Spanish conquistador Pedro de Heredia as his expeditions explored and subjugated areas which are now Colombia. Would it be correct to designate every native Amerindian who assisted Iberians as a Iberian conquistador who'd benefit in the manner of such actual conquistadors who were Spanish citizens colonizing and conquering the New World? No. It is also just as disingenuous to point to instances of a number of Africans who served conquistadors and in a multitude of capacities, and present said Africans as if they were all free men or somehow representative of a major grouping of "Black Conquistators" who'd benefit from Iberian colonization of the Americas in the same manner as actual Portuguese or Spanish conquistadors. There are always outliers, but this video absolutely misrepresents and romanticizes.

Africa is a continenet my friend not a state or a nation . Africa is the most diverse continent in the world . Europe is much more homogenous than Africa .When we seperate the world in “ we “ and “them” we make a big mistake . Now I know that european colonisers when they colonized Africa they saw african nations as one but that doesn’t mean that they are.Europeans have seen the same with asians but do you believe that indians or pakistani poeple are the same race as japanese? North Africa has never been seen as the same as other parts of Africa even by europeans.The fact the reality is far far more complex is very important . And the idea that africans were diivided for me is nonsense bc all racial geoups in the world have been and are divided. European colonizers during colonial era have been constantly fighting agains each other as well . Spaniards agains french and later english , french agains english , english agains french and dutch and everyone else . This history continued until ww2.All racial groups have been divided.

Juan de Garrido or handsome Juan travelled to Spain on his own dime or attached himself as an apprentice directly from the Kingdom of Kongo, note at the relationship at the time with Portugal Handsome Juan was the first to plant wheat in the Americas, which became a key staple in our diet , this fact alone was world changing. But yeah I agree their willing participation in the conquest of the so-called new world especially as non enslaved men, is indeed unsettling. @@st3019 Yeah that’s a sensitive issue with some North Africans from Morocco to Egypt and even some horn Africans. My Egyptian friends although they are brown in complexion don’t consider themselves European or white, but there are some who do. The geopolitical aspect of race in Africa is twisted by antiquated eurocentric rules that has no current benefit. For North Africans (my paternal family is Izenagan/Mozabite from Adrar btw) you’re technically African but not subsaharan so are considered “white”. Now Amazigh are not Arabs either but get classed as “white” just like Arabs while Arabs are middle eastern/west Asian and neither people are of the continental European land mass but are “white” because they aren’t “black subsaharan”. Meanwhile the Amazigh people range from very dark like the Taureg and Tebu people to very light like modern Masmuda and Chleuh. Black and white are outdated constructs and bring a sense of superficial superiority to those who use the term and are not of the European peoples who invented the terms.
@st30192 жыл бұрын
@@marcusbrown307 It’s really annoying when anytime someone talks about classification of races done in recent years, they always have to bring ” Eurocentric “ rules .I’m case you don’t know, races aren’t defined just by their skin color. So being “ white “ vs being “ nonwhite” is totally nonsense. The supposed “ Caucasus mountains “ origin of white people has been debunked by science since in 1970.However, even according to “Eurocentric” rules , North Africans and Middle Easterns are not considered white, like white Europeans.We say they are not black but nobody consider themselves white Europeans.Europeans see some similarities with middle easterns , Iranians, North Indians etc but they don’t consider themselves as “ white Europeans “ . Now , you with your logic , tell me why are , according to “Afrocentric “ rules north africans the same race with people of subsaharan Africa? Or why aren’t Iranians and turks not the same race with europeans? Today , anthropology is debunking and also confirming what was right and wrong about concepts of race . You don’t want the term “ black “ ? Ok, you can say afrocoid or whatever. Stop switching any conversation about science issues to moral issues . Show me the facts.
@marcusbrown3072 жыл бұрын
@@st3019 Whoa calm down cowboy. I know all this already. You just reiterated the same thing I typed. I know middle easterners and North Africans aren’t considered white like Europeans, but according to the European construct of race, which is were it has its roots of classifying people by skin color by late 19th century standards invented by a European scientist. There’s nothing debating the “Eurocentric” thought process about it if it’s based on European thought, it’s European😂. And if you’re North African you’re African on the African continental tectonic plate. Now I’m not arguing anything that’s a fact. All I’m saying is geopolitical classifications of race is sensitive in North Africa from Morocco to Egypt, as you just proved. There’s an Egyptian born American professor that refused to be considered “white” upon arrival in America due to him being African and brown skin. His argument was why should be he considered white just because he’s North African/Egyptian. There was no vote on it everyone agreed with. It is a geopolitical classification of race based on what? Nothing that is beneficial today.

🙄 Be careful with the "Black Conquistador" SEMANTICS and how the term is hyperbolically manipulated (relative to context) throughout this video. Sure there were Africans who served in enslaved capacities and assisted in New World campaigns alongside prototypical Iberian knights, soldiers, and explorers in regards to colonial expansion and militaristic onslaught, but the very semantics in the term "Black Conquistadors" is absolutely misleading (especially how it suggests significant quantity & roles by mentioning a few African outliers used by Iberians for colonial purposes). There were thousands of Iberian conquistadors responsible for subjugating inhabitants of the Caribbean, South America, and even areas of North America. Those conquistadors also had the support of their monarchy as well as Catholic popes. Just as those Iberian conquistadors utilized assistance from Africans, the Iberians also utilized indigenous Amerindians, playing them against other tribes. So we're calling native Americans who were used by the Spanish or Portuguese in colonial schemes "Indigenous Conquistadors" ? 🙄 If someone is going to try to give some misleading exaggerated examples of a relative handful of African exceptions to the rule (who were essentially used by colonial forces in capacities beyond field/plantation/domestic enslavement) the misleading may as well include all continental black African slave raiders who colluded with the Portuguese or Spanish slave traders. Those same black Africans who in the bigger picture indirectly supported European colonial conquest of the Americas are to be considered as "Conquistadors" too ? Their actions (catching Africans from opposing tribes and areas) indirectly supported Iberian footholds and the success of Iberian enslavement of Africans in the Americas. The context and semantics of the phrase "Black Conquistadors" are ridiculously hyperbolic & misleading. It is actually disgusting how the idea is even romanticized via drawings and the way in which much of the video content is disingenuously manipulated, worded, and presented.

Not only that but this man "retired" You can read his letter in the Library of Congress website with him saying he's worked a lot but wanted to settle down and have kids. They gave him some money and he stayed in South America to live out the rest of his life. Then there's people like Mansa Musa who was not a slave at all, this man was 100% an explorer on a conquest to expand his kingdom. Why do you think even Columbus was confused when he landed here 100s of years later? Cuz there were already black people here. Seminole literally means maroon skin. They were the darkest of the natives and situated closest to the Bahamas. Mali is only about 630 miles from South America which is about 1/5 of the distance between NYC and L.A. very doable. Make no mistake, Musa was conquesting TF out of that area.

Very, very good video to the 3rd power my brother, im very familiar with black conquistadors being used by Spain and Portugal. Infact being a Afro Puerto Rican the conquistador you spoke mostly about has a connection with Loiza Puerto Rico in fact if I'm not mistaken, he married the Taino Indian princess who this town is named after. This area PR has a strong African influence. You also showed a picture of the conquistador that accompanied Francisco Coronado I forgot his name it'll be good if you could do a video about him, once again I loved this video in the research you're doing my brother!😎

The book " Prieto: Yorùbá Kingship in Colonial Cuba during the Age of Revolutions Henry B. Lovejoy" chronicles the life of Juan Nepomuceno Prieto taken enslaved from the "Yoruba" region of West Africa in the 18th century. He became a soldier in the Spanish colonial army and participated in military campaigns in Florida. I think he was also involved in putting down the Aponte rebellion in Cuba. The leader of that rebellion Jose Aponte, another man of Yoruba origin, had also previously served as an officer in the Spanish army. Another example: In the wake of the collapse of the Oyo empire, the son of Alafin Abiodun, the emperor, was enslaved and subsequently Abiodun's Brazilian born grandson, Cândido da Fonseca Galvão, served as an officer in the Brazilian army. The history of the Americas has always tended to downplay or dismiss African involvement in any event of notable significance in that part of the Atlantic. The reality is that Africans were heavily involved in many of the pivotal defining moments of history in that region. Here are a just few examples: One of the factors in the Seminole war was the concern over escaped slaves seeking refuge in Florida. Slave rebellions were a constant worry and occurred in EVERY single slave colony in the Americas/Caribbean. Francis Drake sought the assistance of African maroons in raiding Spanish loot in Panama in the 16th century. The Haitian revolution was a major factor forcing Napoleon into the Louisiana Purchase. Haiti supplied soldiers and weapons to Simon Bolivar in his war against the Spanish, in return he agreed to free slaves. When (no surprise!) Bolivar reneged on his promise Haiti invaded Gran Colombia to fight on behalf of the slaves. Then a proxy war ensued drawing in the US, Britain, France and Holland. The Jamaican "Baptist war" uprising contributed to the abolition of slavery by the British. In the 1763 treaty of paris, regions like Quebec were traded by france to Britain for the very small, but extremely lucrative, Caribbean islands of Martinique, St Lucia and Guadeloupe. Formal education, the world over, avoids these storylines, with hollywood stepping up to fill in the blanks! One of the problems is that the history of this region is reduced to the simplistic binary of helpless African slavery versus valiant european swashbuckling, pirates, buccaneers, cowboys and conquistadors. Anyway the great work done by channels like yours is exposing and fixing this imbalance! Bravo!

Several problems with this narrative. The leyenda negra is everywhere. Spaniards did not engage in chattel slavery. Slavery was only allowed under Roman law as the spoil of war. There’s a theme of fighting when there was no army. They didn’t fit on the ships. How do you conquer without an army and who made up the army. Slaves in the Spanish world were better treated, could sue their owners for abuse, and could purchase their emancipation. The conquest of the Americas is much more complicated than merely killing adversaries. It’s actually a story of alliances and negotiation. Emancipated slaves even became professors in universities such as the university of Granada. Interesting how the theme of slavery plays so prominently in Spanish America, but a quick visit to Barbados, Bermuda, Bahamas and Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Colombia and the visible black populations makes clear which European nations engaged in chattel slavery. (It wasn’t Spain.) This also ignores the fact that many indigenous people were conquistadors too such as Juan de oñate (who’s mother was indigenous and who’s wife was indigenous). It is normal for Spanish generals, officers and nobles to exaggerate their exploits and claim credit for the conquests. Remember in the Middle Ages, bravery and valor were valued more than peaceful means of gaining objectives. A closer look at Spain’s relationship to slavery will explain why slaves from Georgia and the Carolinas would flee to Spanish Florida and fort Moises (a freed black Spanish fort). But to do this you may have to few yourself from the leyenda negra and in the same sense as you can’t lump all Asians, all Africans or all Americans in one big group, you can’t lump Europeans together either. The British were the worst. You would never see an armed black man leading a group of other armed men under the British. Think about it.
@tylerrobbins83113 жыл бұрын
I knew a small bit important role? Possible as I doubt the Spanish would have been able to establish themselves as well if they had not had any. There is a reason European powers couldn't colonize successful until the 1800s dies in the tropics made it nearly impossible, something black mercenaries an milita did not suffer from. It's sadly the same reason the Atlantic slave trade happened as black slaves could be used in sugar mills in the Americas for their resistance to tropical disease.

J.A. Rogers said in his book " Sex and Race Vol. 1 " that there were Black Conquistadors. It is not surprising . The African Moors ruled Spain 700 years and when the Spanish reconquered it, they put Moors into their army. These Moors probably had no choice. I read that when some of these Black Conquistadors got to Mexico, they fled their Spanish overlords into the mountains and lived among the indigenous people.

This actually highlights how different and game changing the introduction of race into the wider European consciousness was in the chattel slave trade that blew up later on. This example of early Euro-african slavery has black slaves gaining freedom and white soldiers working alongside free black men, all at the same time. This would have been unthinkable by the time the lie of black sub-humanity had been crystallised as justification for treatment of black people as property. This period seems to me a more normal type of historical slavery. The kind white folk don't believe existed because all slavery was equally bad so they are just as much victims because Romans/Ottomans etc.

🙄 Be careful with the "Black Conquistador" SEMANTICS and how the term is hyperbolically manipulated (relative to context) throughout this video. Sure there were Africans who served in enslaved capacities and assisted in New World campaigns (Native Americans were also utilized and played against other tribes) alongside prototypical Iberian knights, soldiers, and explorers in regards to colonial expansion and militaristic onslaught, but the very semantics in the term "Black Conquistadors" is absolutely misleading (especially how it suggests significant quantity & roles by mentioning a few African outliers used by Iberians for colonial purposes).

You state that the fighting prowess of Blacks (with the Conquistadores, but elsewhere as well) was praiseworthy, and won them respect... also that they were "well-integrated in the Spanish colonies in the Americas by the 17th Century". And yet, when the Spanish set up the Encomienda System (basically based on race), the children born of a Black parent was considered the lowest of worth (two Spanish parents were at the top, then Spanish-Native mix, then two Natives, and lastly, a Native-Black mix). Also, Latin American society (especially Mexico) has very little respect for Black people in general (sadly, I've witnessed it first-hand). How did they go from a respected warrior class to the bottom of the food chain?
