I agree so many rts like to focus on pvp but for the average player most will only ever play casual matches against friends. Don’t get me wrong a balance experience is important but how often do you fire up an rts only to play against bots with friends?

I love Homeworld! I remember playing the original back in the nineties, it completely blew my mind that you could do strategy games in three dimensions! By the way, when they said that they were trying to make this game for twenty years, they weren't kidding. Just look up the Homeworld 2 trailer from E3 2001, that's the game they originally envisioned making but couldn't because of technical limitations (the actual Homeworld 2 ended up looking completely different). They've literally wanted to make this game for almost twenty-five years, and are finally able to now!

IDK, what tech limitations did they have? From this vid (and I will definitely try the demo), all I see is HW1 with upgraded graphics. unit movement is the same, combat interaction is the same...

@@joshuadalton6063, the total number of polygons. Every polygon requires a computation, you can't make a giant ship or asteroid în low poly, it will look like crap. If you're interested, you can watche the making of unreal tournament's map called facing Worlds.

@joshuadalton6063 rendering terrain plus all the engine intrinsics of homeworld 1 which simulated physics for every unit and projectile. in 2 and the remaster they added chance for hits to mitigate lack of computational power of its time plus much better graphics

Honestly I think AR is a much more interesting avenue for strategy games. Imagine having a game of Homeworld 3 above your coffee table and being able to walk around to view all the different nooks and crannies of the map. I really hope AR takes off more in the gaming sphere, I think it has some interesting potential!

Tip: switch to a camera focused on a ship/group of ships, so it takes care of looking relatively where you need to without constantly looking around

I loved Homeworld back in the day. Campaigns where your units and resources persist from one level to the next in RTS games was phenomenal. I'm a little worried the genre hasn't aged well but I'm excited to see this come out, it was my favorite space rts game until Sins of a Solar Empire came out (Yeah I know SoaSE it doesn't technically count as an rts but it shared the same space imo).

How come a UI of 9 y.o. remaster of 25 y.o. game looks and feels better than a UI of 2024 game which is 90% the same gameplay-wise? I was heading into this demo fully expecting to make my first pre-order in years, and left with news of another delay and feeling of not buying it at all if they won't seriously improve UI and camera controls 😢

I don't know what the technical wording for how a unit holds and carries itself on a map is, but the reason I love StarCraft 2 is because of that. I haven't seen anybody accomplish that unit/map cohesiveness quite like StarCraft 2 has.

One part of me is excited for new HW but I lament the loss of the classic experience. Slow and muted immersive gameplay with almost no HUD felt like such a meditative experience. The newer HWs are visually just as beautiful but behind SUCH a busy and attention sapping HUD. Hoping for a purer single player campaign.

Did you ever play the originals? Homeworld, Homeworld: Cataclysm, or Homeworld 2? I used to be hugely involved in the community during the life of the first game and into Cata a bit, had some pretty amazing multiplayer maps that I made too. Oh the memories, I used to be sooooo good at the first one. I would say you need to play the first one if you haven't, but with the Remastered version they just took the assets from the original and ported them into the gameplay engine of Homeworld 2, soooooo many things and ships completely changed the way they behaved from resource collection to repairing and salvage to fighters/tactics/fuel etc.

Good to see HW back, even if it's not the same (ie, campaign). One of the most striking features of HW was that the control felt "natural". Once you did it a few times, it was in muscle memory because it felt that it was as it should be. Which is no small feat for full "360º combat". Many subsequent games totally botched it on that front and payed the price. Haegemonia for example, was far more visually impressive, but while it wasn't terribly bad, the control was... clunky compared to HW. Others were even... less impressive.

I really hoped they would have updated the combat mechanics a little. I've always hated that they give you this infinite sized 3D space and all your ships have to converge and pew pew at each other from about 10 feet away. Just feels so Star Wars'esque.

Well, the Expanse'esque combat of launching torpedoes and several minutes of waiting for how many enemy torpedoes your point defense can deal with is not entertaining to begin with. Homeworld works on a concept of very limited vision/sensor range so you need to get close to an area just to see what's going on there.

The original 3 were timeless classics. The remake of 1&2 were good but not perfect. 3 (technically 4) has potential but the demo mode has a low ship cap, the “artifacts” are tedious but high percentile performance boosts to the only ships you have available and TBH enemies that spawn in entire waves with zero concern for their own resources or tactics (attack move, skirmish the harvesters or point guard is all I saw them do) was the exact opposite of what k expect from a homeworld game. But the controls I got used to quickly (right mouse for freelook, no right mouse for hot keys, middle mouse to focus,hands almost never move away from WASD-QE). The performance was stable, the ship designs I quite liked. The ship survivability felt low, speed was okayish but the maps felt tiny as most of them were “enclosed” and wargame mode I just found a tedious grind as I was at pop-cap 95% of the time once I realised the NPC attackers would periodically throw 5 interceptors/corvettes at the resource nodes periodically. I’m not convinced the 3D element is being made use of yet, time will tell (and the earlier games has similar issues) Oh and the support frigates we’re functionally worthless as they do not auto-repair ships in range and have to turn themselves to sim their 4 turreted heal beams at one target at a time only through direct control.
