Homeworld 3 Review - A Stellar Revival of Classic Space Strategy

The challenge I described at the beginning of this review is capably met by Homeworld 3, even if its story felt a little simplistic. Its lightweight story did not stop me from being captivated by its depiction of the endless, beautiful void of space. The frustrating, difficult-to-master control scheme has been both modernized and preserved for those who crave the classic experience. It's easily beautiful and satisfying enough to meet the standards of classic players and entice a brand-new crowd of interstellar heroes.

I heard there was issues with simple stuff like attack move and armor placement? That was in the beta so did they do anything about it?

I try to be forgiving of minor bugs like that because generally the builds of games that reviewers are playing are pre-day-one-patch, which generally fix the majority of the stuff that we see. I didn't personally encounter any issues egregious enough for me to complain about, but YMMV.

Could've gone into a little more depth in this review with the ship types. Fights, covers, scouts, ion fridges, drone fridges, how their defenses and offences matter or not, etc. Also could've conveyed how large the ships are even in the vastness of space, the mining astroids remove the models, the docking and undocking of ships, and more that carry over from the original first 2 games. Are they present in this? Idk, a lot has been left unsaid about this in the game review.

@@pauls9034 I played the original Homeworld 1, the point of a review is to get insight into if the game is worth the time and money for the consumer filtered through the oppinion/s of the reviewer/s, and in today's landscape theirs a lot to lookout for.

Kinda ironic how you framed this review and Homeworld 3 being the exact disaster you were describing. The fans hate it, it has abysmal Steam reviews and the sales have been negligible. It's essentially killed the Homeworld franchise and dashed any hope of more entries. There are so few players it would be a stretch to expect them to even support it for the promised first year pass...

The only downside to the game is art direction. The ships don't have as much variation as the original two games. The game itself is great, but they could have been more creative with ship design.

dont agreee, its within lore. Why change a design that works, why would a civilization do this so "shortly" after HW2 timeline. This is what we have other Siths within Higaraans for, and other faction we likely get with future dlcs

I was just watching a live stream their seems to be some kind of rouge like mode and I think a skirmish mode as well. Shame he didn't take the time to review the whole game.

It's a game that heavily rewards counters. If you don't carefully consider what ships to send against an enemy based on strenghts and weaknesses, you are likely going to be wiped. That's a very common thing in any RTS. That's where the strategic aspect comes into play. Are you saying the game is broken / unbalanced or you just suck at RTS games and A-move all the time whatever ship you have against whihchever enemy craft?

I mean I'm certainly not great at it, which is why I didn't hold my lack of skill against the game. The only real issue I ended up having regarding strategy that couldn't be chalked up just to my own lack of skill was wishing that I could have more of the strikecraft units, but that was really just a minor complaint.

The point is the multiplayer, not the campaign. For an example of something similar, CoD isn't about the story, they're all about shooting other players the various online modes.

I loved Homeworld when it was released a long time ago. Recently I wanted to replay the remastered versions but was kind of bummed how frustrating the control scheme was. Great to hear that 25 years later that has been improved.

It seems you did not review the whole game, just the campaign. I expected a mention of the skirmish and multiplayer, how they function, what other game modes there are if any. In this way, the review feels lacking.

`Stellar` is definitely NOT the word I'd use to describe `The Amanda Show` like story.... Poor Review anyway, you missed reviewing half the game. 🤷‍♂

The way combat plays out in terms of distance, movement, how fighters maneuver, how projectiles are shown and displayed, etc is in my opinion really boring compared to HW1. Even the remaster didn't do it justice because it was remade in the HW2 engine. Something just feels so mobile-like about the gameplay, instead of epic fights in space. They made sure the background objects give you a sense of scale, and then use that scale to appreciate the ships themselves but then how the fights of the ships play out is in knife range and even larger ships seem like just another fighter craft to not care about. It's like you get the impression you're in the Atlantic/Pacific Ocean for a battle (analogy) but the actual combat happens in a backyard pool. It's very compressed. It totally takes away from the scale scope of the map and how you would think a fight would happen. It almost makes the aspect of fighting in space pointless. Plus HW1 made you care about each craft to some degree but here it's just feels cheap and throwaways. Get a few pretty flashes of color for the dopamine hit. There's no real impact to the fights like HW1 felt or even Cataclysm. Once people get past the "pretty" veneer, there's nothing special or impactful about this game from everything I've seen so far. Glad I didn't pre-order. Maybe I'm the only one that feels this way because it seems reviewers think it's great.

With the lack of good strategy games being released, I think a lot of reviews are just hungry for something.. Anything.. which is too bad because I loved this franchise, but canceled my pre-order when I saw the lack of features of first aired demonstrations.

Giving this game a 8.5 is just puzzling. The problem with games like this is that they are sequels an as such raise certain expectations with players, whilst most of the reviewers that will review the game weren't even born when the first game came out, so there is a disconnect. You said the story is forgettable, but that is a big step down from the previous games. Before we had a more militaristic approach to an civilization ending catastrophe and now a bad guy with some beef... The gameplay is unresponsive and stripped down, for example you are now unable to target subsystems on ships. So no, it's not a good revival of the series, the story is a step back, the gameplay is a step back and when you say in the review that the best thing in the game is the emptiness of space with it's ambience in a "game", we have a serious problem.
