Space combat games were very popular back than. You would be surprised how high is the % of those games in all games made back in '80 and '90. It only started to go down since 2005 if we go by development and 2008 if we go by release dates.

@@perafilozof it's not that surprising to be honest. 1. Space theme are appealing to many. 2. You need to render less stuff for a space sim/rts compared to other themes. So you can pack more content in the limited capabilities computers and consoles had in the 1980-2000

Oh I know of it very well. Played the first one a dozen times over. So much fun. But with no building, and as you said a party RPG system I simply couldn't add it to this list. @@perafilozof Ah, that's what you were getting at! In my humble opinion, SW1 is clearly and unfortunately the best part. For SW2, the developer had the "great" idea of turning SW into an open world game. Which means you spend a lot of time idling / waiting. SW2 was also released buggy and unfinished and was dropped after release. SW3 is also open world. But, as far as I know, was released much more "finished". However, SW3 has no voice output and the texts are only in English or Russian. TLDR: A mixture of mismanagement and the developer didn't understand what made SW1, so special has "ruined" this series.
@perafilozof
@perafilozof 6 ай бұрын
Perfectly summarized! I think exactly the same. I remember getting crashed to desktop when I tried to play SW2 and some bad scripting when I tried to play SW3 where I couldn't do quests/missions at all. While I replayed the first game... honestly I have lost count, probably 5+ times.

Nebulous: Fleet Command. As a long-term enjoyer of Homeworld 2 and Remaster I can say confidently that Nebulous plays almost exactly like Homeworld. While it possesses smaller-scale naval warfare on the scale of Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2, it's intricate fleet customization and sheer depth of gameplay more than make up for it and actually meshes very well with said smaller scale.

Hi, thank you for mentioning it. The problem is that is basically the only thing it shares wirh Homeworld. No Mothership, no resources, no construction, no reseach, no missions, no story, no characters. It is mostly just an arena combat game. So while I had it in my mind, it simply isn't close enough.

For me Imperium Galactica 2 is the complete and primal masterpiece. There is no other game the puts all those elements together, in a single art game. IG2 has everything we need in a game, of course that with the chronological considerations. It has star wars in a 3D plan, colony management, merchant relations, diplomatic relations, spy relations, research and development resources and much more. It was a complete shame it was not updated. I have HW2 and is an excellent game, but nothing compared to IG2, really. Those guys were geniuses.

Stellar Warfare is the kind of project that deserves so much attention. i joined their discord and almost immediately the developer asked me what I thought, how I learned about it, and what could be changed to make it better. Games like this, with a single developer riding the reins. They have to be supported and respected. Also. You are right, no game can compare to Homeworld. Even Deserts of Kharak maintains the same design and love for the series. They need to remake Cataclysm. I don't care that Blizzard copyrighted that name. It needs a remaster.

Looking forward to that second list of games. Homeworld and Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion are probably my 2 fav games, but Sins slightly edges it due to its 4X characteristics and ability of sandbox roleplay. I am rather sure i am aware of every game like that, fitting my personal criteria, but perhaps there is some mysterious gem i never heard of, that you will include, so i am definitely curious. Regarding this list, i think old game from 1997 called Star Command Revolution deserves a mention. Its not fully 3D like HW, or actually 3D at all, but it revolves around mothership, thats the only unit that can move between interconnected sectors, while every sector has some enemy, you need to remove, before advancing to the wormhole leading to another sector on the other side of the map (sector). Sometimes there is more of these wormholes, so you can actually choose, which way to go and actually you can move back and forth with the mothership. On every sector you can then harvest resources and build bunch of structures and units. The key element of the game are those resources, its 5 of them, they are finite and persistent across all the sectors, 4 of them are used to build specific types of units, that are hard counters to other units. So it can happen to you, if you are wasteful with them, at some point of the "campaign" it may happen to you, that you lack specific resource to build essential unit type to defeat enemy in that particular sector. All in all, it was very unique game, but very fun and entertaining, having the classic rts elements like unit construction and resource management, while being rather action based and oriented on unit micro-management. Despite that, i feel its rather obscure and unjustly overlooked - unfortuntely it had to compete with Starcraft back in the day. Anyway I believe it does by itself deserve its own video from you.

That is quite a good description. Thank you very much for sharing it with us. I don't remember playing such a game, so it is definitely worth checking out. Love the comment and all the details you gave about it. Indeed SINS gameplay is a step up from homework in complexity and scale so it really deservs a video on its own. Real time staratrgy and 4X space hybrids are a subgenre on their own. And turn based ones are another subset.

@@perafilozof What about game: Andromeda:Rebirth of Humanity ? Its crossplatform game now (Android/IOS/SteamOs). I'm not sure and I'm not saying that this game is a classic RTS and that it's very similar to Homeworld. But I'm sure of two things: 1. this game is a classic, quite canonical 4x, just like Homeworld. 2. Signs of exactly 4 in both games are much more than it might seem. And these signs in v Homeworld, IMHO, are more significant than the signs of the RTS. Because, in such grandiose, large-scale games, most of the gameplay is IMHO, about the economy and micromanagement. Wars - perhaps for some they are the most delicious, at least in games. But wars are always very expensive, if we are talking about strategies, and made as high quality and realistic as possible, with the study of all game mechanics and relationships.

Loved to play HW Remaster, except that one campaign mission that was bugged due to mechanics changed to HW2 but I managed find a workaround to that so overall experience was great. Almost like in childhood =) Nexus: The Jupiter Incident - looks like just a game for me. Now the hardest part - to find a time to actually try it. Ancient Space - has some interesting elements. Wonder why it was underloved so much. I won't comment SWf cause I'm too biased towards loving it =P Thx for featuring it tho! Genesis looks like Star Craft that are actually about 'star craft' and not a War Craft in space =) No hate to SC. ORB and Far Gate made me sad that those weren't sold in my country when they were released. Now even if I buy them - most likely only to sit on the steam shelf never to be touched. =( I wish big success to the Ephemeris (or whatever it will be named on release). @@perafilozof That's awesome! Yeah, Haegemonia to me was Star Wars when I got it around 2006-ish. I got stuck on the 4th mission on the Earth campaign because I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do after freeing Major Sanders. Realized like 15 years later when I got it on Steam that there is a research window I missed and it was like reliving my childhood anew. Not much in terms of space games nowadays because I can't find anything that matches the Haegemonia feel outside of Homeworld. The only recent space games I've played, that get close, are Avorion and Starsector. Avorion's fighter combat keenly resembles that of Haegemonia and there are some ship designs in Starsector, which oddly resemble designs from Haegemonia. I wonder if one of the devs has a similar track record to yours and that's where they got the design inspiration from. Aside from that I'm mostly playing Battlebit, Battle Brothers and Medieval II Total War.

Hi, yes, Imperium Galactica 2 will be part of my next video list of games like SINS. But the line here was drawn on the moment 4X elements like planet management and resource collection, trade, diplomacy become as big as RTS combat. I was trying to keep this video down to games where the space fleet combat was the main gameplay and some games just had some extra elements. That is why all the other games I will mention in future lists where I think they will match gameplay better. Thank you for a great comment and question TheRealXartaX! Which of these have you played?
@TheRealXartaX

@@perafilozof Only Homeworld and Battlefleet Gothic (which I hated). If the game doesn't have a strategic layer (resources, diplomacy, etc.) I'm not that interested. Same reason I think Dawn of War 1 is the best one and the later ones kinda suck (even 2, which many like). Removing strategy for more accessibility. Gothic was a really bad offender because there was almost no actual strategic decision making and just about suiciding objectives (haven't tried the second one).
@perafilozof
@perafilozof Жыл бұрын
@@TheRealXartaX I see. And that is a good point. Striping away layers to make games more accessible just makes the game less fun in the end, because it reduces the changes players have to really try their best to learn to play and win. And if it is no challenge it quickly becomes boring and people drop it for the next thing. That kind of gameplay might get you more sales at first, but down the line it dooms the game's potential and everyone forgets about it.
