What the heck is wrong with the DM in the second story? At first I thought he was just a jerk who hates kids, but no: he's a jerk who hates *everyone* for some reason? Even Cain and the Barbarian (who seemed completely innocent) get awful consequences for the crime of being part of the campaign? Genuine sociopathic behavior: I hope for everyone's sake the DM seeks therapy, but I know they won't.

Hi, this is OP from Story 2! I want to speak up about something really quick before I retire for bed, but I'll be free to answer any questions when I can tomorrow. Yes, I read the awesome comments that could power word the DM to the 9 Hells, and I appreciate it a lot! XD Firstly, Cain and I only knew DM based off what he's told us and I didn't really want Eri to know about his story besides that "he knows what he's doing". Before Eri joined, DM was going through an off and on relationship and he was going through some substance abuse. But it was only after the breakup (the week when Eri joined) that he really started becoming the man you just read about. What else bothered me was that he seemed to only take his frustrations out on the girls (me, Eri, and Rogue), while the boys (Cain and Barbarian) basically got the "bros before hos" sort of attitude (And yes, even his girlfriend had the same problem. More on her later). Clearly Eri got the worst of it, and while I felt sick in the stomach, I was the naive people pleaser that just wanted to keep the peace. I know, I hated myself for that, but I grew a spine in the end, so don't hate me (lol). One other thing, DM never really had a chance to sit and talk with my sister like Cain did- he had an actual opportunity to talk to her during Session 0. When that happened, I guess he skimmed through her inventory and just said "okay, you're in!". I had this happen to me before (twice), so yeah... kind of pissed that it happened to a beginner player, my sister nonetheless. Secondly, I found out of the DM's girlfriend after she joined our now ongoing campaign as a warlock. During "commercial break", she admitted to me that DM broke up with her while she's pregnant, her baby expected in June. And what caused the breakup was that she was trying to get him help and he didn't want the "fix" because he thought she was trying to make him into someone he's not- a "hard addict with a big boobed who** as a girlfriend". His words, not mine. She also told me he's trying to start up a campaign soon after the holidays. And guess who just got an invite to join the game? ...Yep, me and Cain. He'll have his GF as a second DM, but he warned her that if she does something he doesn't like, he'll "put her in her place". This is what made her stop contacting him altogether, even calling the police and going to court to put a restraining order on him since he knew where she lived. I felt so sorry for her, and even Cain offered to help her since his uncle is in law enforcement. I don't know where he is now, but I won't stress over him. We're all happy now, and I rather we stay happy forever than worry about a deadbeat like him. Lastly, Eri's disability- in case you're curious or prying- is PTSD and acute stress disorder. Otherwise, she's perfectly fine and healthy, and she's enjoying life a lot better now rather than cry about it. But as of reference to the story, that's why Eri was worried DM was mad at her (her parents- moreso her dad, would always yell at her when he's angry) and why she was nervous to speak whenever she felt like her back was against the wall (she had a hard time socializing with people, such as when she was trying to get used to being with me and my parents). Now, she's practically playing like a total veteran, and I'm so proud of her! She doesn't cry much (not saying she totally stopped crying), and whenever she needs help, she talks to me, Cain, or the DM- during breaks or during sessions. And if she gets upset over something- even if it has nothing to do with the game, the DM is reasonable enough to give her a break, and even takes over her character until she's ready to get back in the game. Context for our campaign: Eri has given her sling to a child who wanted to grow to be an adventurer like her, and dip into the fighter class so she can have access to "Extra Attack" and a boost in health and defense. She's now our frontline, alongside Cain's paladin character- though she still helps in healing and buffing the party when we need it. I released my contract to protect Eri , retired him after completing his character story, and I'm now working into creating a new character soon. And DM's GF is an awesome warlock player who likes getting into everyone's heads, enemy or ally. And so far, she's Cain's worst nightmare (lol)! Our story will see that we take on her character's BBEG, so can't wait to face off against a vampire (thank GOD it isn't Astarion)! Anyway, peace out people. I'll talk to you guys soon. Have a good night/morning/evening, and I'm off to bed!

For what it's worth, both you and your sister are welcome into my campaigns in the future. What he did was just horrific and wrong. I'm sorry your sister's first experience went down that way. His relationship issues and substance abuse issues are not yours or your sisters problems for him to lash out with. I do not hate you, I can understand the difficulties of speaking up or standing up in a situation like this. I used to be like that as well. I'm glad you two and Cain found a good DM and that they're much better working with ya'll. I've had on and off again campaigns throughout the years but DnD is one of those things I absolutely love, enjoy and am passionate about. So seeing what he did to the characters after ya'll left was blood boiling and sickening and only speaks of his mental state. I have no sympathy for people who use their real life situations as a way to punish or abuse their players.

Hi, I just want to answer on OP's behalf (I'm a friend of hers, and her computer is getting fixed right now. For Andrew, yes she did. She mentioned that Eri had a disability but didn't really get into much detail- just "she's disabled, and yelling makes her upset." For snyperwulf, I'm sure she and Eri would love to, especially since their campaign is on hold because of her computer problem. By the time her campaign finishes (which should be before or after the holidays), she should be available. And yes KingZNIN, he is a total creep from what I've heard/seen in a while.

After hearing it several times, I have to say that the 1st story sounds like the DM was trying to play out a power fantasy with his "superior" npc's where the pc's were supposed to be awestruck and fall over themselves to date them. Then when he got presented with something that went against the narrative in his head he threw a fit and decided to back the party into a corner before railroading his own ending whether the party wanted or not.

I've actually thought about how cool it would be to run a campaign in the style of The Boys where main villains are "heroes" who defend the realm but are actually total psychopaths who commit unspeakable atrocities when not in the public eye. That second story makes me so MAD. I play primarily healers. What that DM is failing to remember is that if you build a good healer, they'll never be alone on the battlefield because PEOPLE DON'T DIE IF THEY'RE BEING HEALED. I'm currently playing a character in my gf's campaign that is specifically built to be the main healer. At higher levels, dude is going to be a healbot (at level 1 he is admittedly kind of useless, lol). If he wanted to run a campaign where people minmax the hell out of their characters and are very damage oriented, he needs to say so. Plus, why ask "where are you?" if you're gonna get upset when a player tells you where they are?? If he wanted the cleric to start off in the church, he needs to say, "Cleric, I think you're probably at the church." Still annoying that she's not given a choice in the matter, but at least he didn't give her the illusion of choice before bringing her down. What an ass.

You would think that in a world where there are supernatural threats people would have better things to worry about but I guess not. So does DM #2 just not realize that healers can heal their friends? He's talking like he expects a situation where a fight's gonna come down to just one person left standing, since that's why he's so sure a pure healer is a bad idea. And since he's the DM, that means he can (and probably intended to) approach battles with a severe "kill the party" mindset. I can't see this being a very pleasant game, good thing it didn't start.

Why is it that people always equate a world where everything sucks and there is no fun or whimsy with "realism"? For the second story I think the DM built up that a newbie player would be a problem. She didn't do anything weird or dumb with her character, but the DM acted like it was a problem because that's what he was expecting. Saying "no, I don't feel like incorporating a brand new player" would have been superior to what he did. Sure, OP might have still left because she wanted to play with her sister, but at least he would not have made a girl cry for the "crime" of trying to interact with his world.

Not gonna lie, that first story had a really good set up to start a villain arc. Introduce the party to dickhead NPC's that are obviously much stronger than the party and force the group to do things against their will, lest they face severe consequences. Have the NPC's attend the same setting as the group to really ramp up the tension and then when graduation day arrives, a full blown rivalry/enmity starts and the once powerful NPC's now realize that the group, after much training, is now much closer in power to them than they realized and is beginning to form a serious threat to their former dominance. You could make a really good story out of that. You have a central setting in the academy, you have your good guys, your bad guys, a plot that can move in many different ways and room for a lot of colorful NPC's. It could have been great. Unfortunately, DM's ego ruined it and turned it into a boring power fantasy. What a shame. I might nick this idea, tweak it a little bit and use it for one of my own campaigns some day, though. I don't watch anime, but in my mind, I'm imagining a version of X-men, only with more of a focus on the teenagers, rather than the adults. Could be really interesting...if not very original, but tbh, most of my campaigns aren't really that original to start with anyway, lol. Doesn't mean they can't be fun, though.

Nope, I would have walked the moment the DM forced me to be a class I didn't wanna be. That's not how it works. For the second story, the OP should have stepped forward and pulled the DM aside about the situation. The DM was being a whole prick for nothing. Eri could have been where ever the hell she pleased at the time, and it isn't up to the DM to decide that. Perhaps she, as a Cleric, helps tends to injuries related to training.

The 2nd story is obviously that the DM was unwilling to accommodate a fresh and inexperienced player. Which isn't a bad thing to encounter. New players in any game can be and are a HUGE plus for veteran players because they get to teach them using their own experiences and watch those players grow. What's more though is the DM seemed to be against a more casual and beginners build. Which is stupid. There's nothing wrong with how Eri built her character. Some people are just not fans of high damage or fully combat oriented builds. And starting out small gives a TON of space for greater development later on and encourage the player to make even more creative ideas with the character they made. Like, have the character go through something traumatic that leads them down a path of vengeance. Or have them meet and get inspired by a folk hero legend. But never, and I mean NEVER, do what this DM did. It's childish and leads to close friends splitting up and months of world/ story building to go to waste.

For the sake of Clerics, it depends on the type of Cleric Sub-Class if they are a Healer or Not. For example: My favorite character I created is A Chaotic Neutral Female Drow Feylost background Death Domain Cleric sworn to the Raven Queen. She isn't the stereotypical Healer Type, she is more the nuke the enemy type with her Spells then if absolutely necessary then she will heal herself & the party with potions/medicine kit preferably.

In my experience, one of the best ways to deal with an ERP forcing creep is to just flip it on them. These people tend to be so engrossed in pursuing ERP or controlling the narrative that they just ignore any out of character protests and keep pushing and pestering. So you ruin the fantasy, he says you're naked, in stocks and "free use" for being gay? Well you rp out how the non binary Diety of LGBTQ comes down from the heavens, swaps you and your girlfriend out for the King and his favorite dmpc and turns all those excited of age men gay. Shuts that shit down real quick. Though in this case it's probably for the best she didn't do that since she was in pen stabbing range. Best used when online only.

What's it with DMs and putting female characters through SA fantasies? Luckily, I never met someone doing that, but a lot of the stories here seem to revolve around that. It makes me honestly sad. And I would have just took my stuff and left, had the DM from the first story tried to do something like he did to barbarian and sorcerer to my character. I would also have alerted the shop owner, because I believe, that people coming up with that kind of stuff, are not unproblematic. At the very least, they make others uncomfortable, and the worst - well, they stab their parents in the head. It could also have ended with the guy trying to make his sick fantasies real.

Let me rewrite the second storys ending: the entire pantheon rose up with the aid of the characters and the rallied masses to overthrow the worthless, pathetic overgod of the realms. The player characters went on to aid the gods in rebuilding the realms into a better, safer place for the weak and downtrodden.

"Homophobia" First of all, -phobia implies overwhelming fear, not just angsty dislike, so I'm already taking OP's side of the story with a grain of salt, so to speak. I take this kind of dishonest phrasing with the same distrust as i do calling Homosexuality, "Homoerotic Fetishism". That said, as far as the RP plot of that campaign was going. Overpowered DMPCs are usually a red flag. However could indeed be a setup for an interesting plot twist. Still, if you're going to do a revolution plot, step 1 is to NOT antagonize the BBEG when you're still a bunch of weak rookies. I'll agree that DM pulled several dick moves that were going WAY too far, but i have my doubts about OP's claims of being an experienced player as well. Telling the King, "We're sorry, your highness, we didn't realize. Each of us are simple folk from the countryside." Or something to that affect and appeasing him, while harboring those feelings in secret, would have been the wiser maneuver. Putting up a stubborn front in the heart of enemy territory, surrounded by jacked DMPCs is just begging for a smackdown. Also, medieval theocratic kingdom, deeming that sort of thing illegal? Totally not unvelievable. Take a look at any classic fascist dictatorship, either IRL, or in sci-fi or fantasy, and there's usually this strong theme of everything that doesn't serve a useful purpose to the state is a waste of resources and therefore bad, thus illegal. Well, that's my point of view anyway.

13:53 That's like one of those super long manga titles that doubles as a summary. Did they think a title is the same thing as a TL;DR? I'm also not quite sure this all true. For one thing, the adopted sister is said to have "a disability" with no further explanation, and she apparently slept on the floor like a stereotypical orphan girl, and for another thing, the DM is such a bad guy caricature that it's just comical, and of course, the OP is the white knight older sibling that defends their poor little sister from the terrible villain DM. If this isn't fake, there's at least some stuff left out and/or embellished.

Assertiveness is a LEARNED SKILL. Far too many people don't get taught it at a young age and a considerable number of people (me included) are actively punished for it. Yes, you're right that those are skills that need to be learned but people aren't static so talking about them as if those are actual 'types' instead of simply skills not everyone has learned is wrong. Effectively saying they shouldn't get to play is not reasonable in the slightest and given how large the overlap between "People who struggle with assertiveness, self-esteem and people management skills," and "People who play TTRPGs," is effing HUGE, that's excluding a lot of people. Not to mention that TTRPGs are used in some settings specifically to help people develop those skills. People skills take time, effort, and HELP to learn later on. You're veering dangerously in the direction of victim-blaming here.
