Sorry, the first story... You clearly don't understand how much of a legal issue killing someone's pet is. That isn't just small claims court. That is potential imprisonment from charges territory. If someone kills your pet, call the police, and press charges. If your local police are stupid enough to not do anything about it, call your *lawyer*. A judge won't just wave it off if they're even half worth their role.
@tigerkatze98199 ай бұрын
Wishful thinking but unfortunately the burden often falls on the owner if no human was harmed (for example, police only get involved if someone was bitten by a dog). In the eyes of the law your horse, fish, dog, cat, chickens, no matter how much you loved them, are property. You cannot be charged with homicide or murder or manslaughter, etc. for killing a pet, usually only property damage. Animal abuse resulting in death maybe.

Firstly, as a reptile owner myself(Two Ball Pythons, a Normal female named Snickers and her Banana Enchi son Chip) that man probably would not be leaving unscathed. Hell I'd probably get Aspca involved if possible as well, make sure he doesn't have any pets himself. If he's willing to kill someone else's pet, why shouldn't we be worried if he has any himself? That's not to say I wouldn't be happy about it if he lost his pets afterwards, rightful as it would be. Oh well, as a witch I believe in the rule of three. Anything you do, comes back to you three times as hard. Let's hope karma can thoroughly wreck him in due time, but that no other animals have to suffer for it. On a lighter note, perhaps the 'I'm too smart for you' guy can be dealt with using items. Maybe have some cards that the players know contain items in the future. Then when numbnuts pulls his 'tOo sMaRt fOr yOu' schtick, make a show of pulling some cards out from the deck of goodies. Then if asked about it, don't tell the players anything beyond that who knows, maybe you'll find something nice for yourselves? Just make sure you had maybe two items already in the house itself, so that it's not so out of the blue. Maybe this is a bit railroady...but to me from the perspective of a player, I'd wanna go in there after knowing items have been pulled out. Hell I'd do it without the incentive just to spite the turd nugget, but maybe that's just me. I'm not the best DM AT ALL and actually have a CO-DM that helps me since the stats and math of the game itself tends to break my brain. I know, not ideal, but you do what you gotta do and my group hasn't any complaints about that. That last story is a good example of what I call a "Van Halen Test". The name comes from the band Van Halen, who like many bands, had a list of requirements for their shows to ensure their performance would work, such as making sure the stage's weight limit could hold up their equipment, that their lights and pyrotechnics had proper wiring and wattage, stuff like that. But what they would also include was for their dressing room to be provided with a bowl of M&Ms with the brown ones removed. This has often been the butt of jokes involving prima donna celebrities, but it was actually put there to ensure the band that the hosts of their shows had actually read their contract and made the requirements. If they didn't see a candy bowl, then the band had to check what else was neglected by their hosts.

It makes many people uncomfortable but pets are property in the eyes of the law. You likely can only sue someone for the value of the animal. 1) Go down to the police station rather than call 911. File a police report because police likely will not come to the house. 2) If they were a rescue, well, go to a pet store or download from online several listings for the price of Tengu in your area. This is proof of value in place of a receipt 3) File a small claims hearing. In the eyes of most states, animals are property so yes you do have to put a value on your loved ones. Dont expect winning an Emotional Distress charge for property claims. 4) Check local laws or state laws to see if killing pets fall under a wrongful death or animal cruelty claim. 5) Check how much it costs to file a small claims in your precinct. It might not be worth it sadly.

The fox thing, this is a great thing to do. You see this when bands negotiate their concert shows, as there are certain power requirements or safety issues for these shows that might burn down the place if these aren't met. A clause at the end of the writer for a bowl of M&Ms without the green ones demonstrates to the band that they read the entire writer. While the story of lizard murder was significantly worse, two of the others struck a personal cord. The salty wizard story annoys me because I have run into people who get upset when another player is doing "too well". If that player isn't cheating, this goes against the very heart of the cooperative game that is D&D. We share and empathize with each other's successes and failures. I am currently blessed with a table that does this naturally and it adds so much to the experience. The other I would like to comment on is the "progress" story. I have run into those players reluctant to do anything dangerous or risky at all. The smugness of thinking you "outsmarted the DM" just adds that extra layer of annoyance. I both have had a DM and been the DM who had to go above the table and ask a player "is your character an adventurer or not?" While you can play smart and take precautions, sometimes you just have to pull that lever, or hit the big shiny button or delve into the dangerous and unpleasant dungeon. If your quest is a dungeon crawl, the characters need to enter the dungeon. If it is a mystery, you need to investigate the damn mystery.

For instance, anybody that wanted to host Van Halen had to provide a bowl of M&Ms in the green room with all the brown ones removed. If the manager didn't see M&Ms in the green room, or if they saw a brown one, they knew that somebody didn't actually read the contract and so they needed to be extra-careful in their pre-concert inspection.

Close. It was Van Halen, and they insisted that a bowl of M&Ms be in their dressing room with the green ones removed. And yes, it was for the purpose you mention. So for safety and insurance concerns, they hid the M&M Clause in the back among the exhaustive list of structural requirements, to know the venue took safety seriosuly. Dont mean to be That Guy. Law student here: Can confirm that in most places around the world, pets are property. Cruelty to animals would involve things like getting a vet to testify, graphic photos, etc. the lizard was probably worth less than 2k. As for animal cruelty, most places define it as deliberately withholding food or water, bestiality, or violence resulting in death. As for a potential legal case, stepping on it would be a hard sell as the guy could claim it was an accident or the animal was ready to attack him. That guy could easily win with the right lawyer. As stated above, a veterinarian would need to testify, and no vet is going to take time out of their busy schedule to testify for an exotic animal. An animal that, considering it was a rescue, was probably illegally purchased by the previous owner, as you need permits for an exotic animal. Sorry Doge, the legal system isn’t perfect, and it’s even worse when ordinary people think they know things but don’t.

Forth story: It’s not taking away player agency for events to naturally unfold given player choices, or lack there of. D&D isn’t a video game in which nothing happens until the player makes “the right choice”. Time and events should be very fluid and should progress in spite of player actions as much as because of them.

Also, I recommend any mystery being solvable by multiple avenues. Even if the players missed that clue, the DM should've had many more clues in place to investigate. If the DM only puts one clue there where the investigation grinds to a halt if nothing happens, then the DM has failed, not the players.
@rb987699 ай бұрын
@@Kanaleah Yeah. OP might have been new to the horror/mystery genre of RPGs, so there's that. As much as I hate players who have zero proactivity, sometimes these things do happen and you need to either fall onto a plan B or improvise. With that said I think the demon breaking out is pretty valid.

I have a person like Star as my little brother. He's always right even when he's wrong, and he plays Lawful Stupid characters because if you're not Mother Teresa, you're not Good, and if you're not Adolf Hitler, you're not evil, which is the correct way to interpret the alignment system according to him. He also has to be in charge because no one else is capable of doing so, not that he ever gives anyone a chance. All his friends are either incapable of standing up for themselves due to some stuff from their home life or smoke so much weed that they don't even care, so he thinks that's normal, and he never listens to anyone telling him he's being a douche. It's a shame because I'd love to play a game with the nice little brother he used to be, and I don't think I'll ever get to.

Roleplaying is a collaboratibe effort. The absolute rule isn't _"The DM is always right,"_ or _"The player is always right,"_ but _"Both of you, be reasonable."_ There's difference between inconveniencing the DM and forcing their hand to do something drastic to proceed in story. To halt the story is to misuse player agency.

Would push back a bit on the last story. At least from my experience, asking if there are any openings left is just the common courtesy that's expected on lfg, so a lot of people will do so before applying properly. The OP might inadvertently be turning away perfectly good players because they misinterpreted politeness for laziness.

1st story. ALWAYS! escort trash and trouble from your home. don't just let them leave. and then watch them, watch your cars, make sure they don't do anything. see them leave, you never know if they are just going to the car to get a gun or a crow bar. NEVER! take your eyes off people like that.

Last game I played, we were about to come up on a drider as low level characters. I looked up the creature after the session because I was so excited, and wanted to know more about them. I don't remember any of the stats, but I was excited to find out they spoke elvish, as did my character. I was looking forward to finding out if the muttering we were hearing through the door could've been elvish and we could talk to it. Unfortunately, the game neve really picked up after that because some of the other players just disappeared...

In the second story, OP has homebrews for a better true strike, access to inflict wounds, and a better weapon, and is killing flying creatures with a melee spell, while wizard can't have published spells because homebrew lore? I think there is another story here...

For the password picture story, I was in a discord for a videogame server that used this in their rules post and you could tell who did and didn't read the rules. "How do I get past step 2?" Read the rules. "I did!" Apparently not.

Player agency doesn’t trump logical consistency. At least not in a lot of games, and the ones that don’t just don’t feel like anything makes sense or means much. For instance, if you are on a literal train, expect to get railroaded.
@PaladinGear158 ай бұрын
The second story... Normally that's a brand new player mistake, like the time I was playing with a pretty new group and after the combat someone was like "I've never heard of a yellow slime before so I was quickly trying to google its stats to know how to safely kill it". You'd think it''s kinda common sense to not metagame to such a harsh degree, but I can forgive it from brand new players, and we just explained to that new guy you should never look up a monster's stats, as for the DM doing this, I kinda feel like this was intentional because they didn't like how strong the enemy was.

For the second story, there is a lot of missing context. The tldr is that the DM has terrible at balance and did in fact show favouritism for OP by giving him dr gs that gave him like a 16 in con, neglecting the weakness that said wizard called out (i.e showing favouritism by neglecting one players weakness). Sure the wizard was salty but with context it's understandable, and the real nightmare was the DM who gave OP a bunch of homebrew items and spells that were specific to OP.

1st story is absolutely enraging. I'm fairly sure animal cruelty is illegal in most places so the cops are full of fail. The DM from the Star story was dropping the ball a bit if things were getting like that.
