How to add an auxiliary oil cooler to a Honda 400EX / TRX400X quad. This is a fairly inexpensive modification and not too difficult, but if you are running hot it could save your engine.

Did you have to add extra oil to the engine after installing oil cooler ? To make up for the amount traveling through the cooler boss just wanting to know if to add a little more oil then it takes.

Hey man! I have a few questions. 1: do you run any big bore or stroker and camshaft? Because mine is now 440 with a stroker kit which makes it 460 and the top end is pretty noisy (prolly the valves) and I think that yours is not doing any weird noise. Do you think these type of tie rap would hold riding trails ? Btw thanks for the video

I did another video installing a big bore kit, I think just 416cc or something like that. The cooler is holding on well.

If you guys do this, go ahead and do yourselves a favor and spend and extra $40 to $60 on Amazon ordering a 4” Spal Puller fan and install it Behind your stock oil cooler ( on the engine side, not the front of the bike ) and run it to a $7 on/off switch. The reason why I say to hook it to the stock cooler and not the extra added cooler, is because where the stock cooler is mounted, the puller fan is in an optimal place to draw air through the cooler, and then over the engine since it’s right behind it. I’ll try to make a video of it when I do it. I’ve got a GoPro, I just suck at talking 😂 so we will see.

I’m also thinking about adding that $230 bigger oil tank, but not sure how much having an extra oil cooler and a bigger oil tank will strain the oil pump, IF ANY. Not sure of the physics behind it. If anybody has input, please let me know,
@TomsTinkeringandAdventures
@TomsTinkeringandAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
@@BWADaniel Extra oil is probably a good thing, but I wonder if there’s an optimal temperature that the engine needs? Perhaps with the big oil tank, extra cooler and the fan it could prevent it from getting hot enough? I have no idea. I suppose an oil temp gauge would be great to have as well. Thanks for your suggestions!

Where you drilled the hole for the bottom mounting bracket is where the vin# is typically at on a 400ex. I'd avoid doing damage to it. You can always pull a sticker off and sand paint down. Maybe 1 or 2 numbers gone wouldn't matter idk.
@TomsTinkeringandAdventures
@TomsTinkeringandAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I didn’t see the VIN there but also wasn’t looking for it! If so, definitely need to find a different way to mount it, I wouldn’t want to destroy the VIN. Thanks for the information.
@tylergist8557
@tylergist8557 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah he has that sticker covering it. So you wouldn't know it was there. Only reason I know where it was because I had to get a title made for a 400ex. The only way I could get a title made was to take the quad to the sheriff's office and they ran the vin# to make sure it wasn't reported stolen

So how much oil you think that oil cooler keeps in it I'm just saying if it were me I would have put it upside down so that gravity could feed the oil back to the tank Maybe instead of having to add oil because you're going to lose it what a half a quart in cooler or less
@TomsTinkeringandAdventures
@TomsTinkeringandAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
It likely doesn’t hold much, upside down could work as well. There are all kinds of ways to do this, I just used what I had and it seems to work ok. Let me know if you come up with a great setup.
