I have one of those XJs and they are actually very very fast. The gear shifts are smooth at high rpm and you can carry the RPM up to 9000rpm. Shaft drive is a bonus. Ride mine every day, and have gotten alot of compliments

I miss my '81 CB900 Custom. I really loved that bike. It was fast, comfortable, and reliable .Once you get used to a good bike, safety comes into the equation. Many long trips are under my belt. Please look out for yourself. Don't do anything stupid and keep your bike in tip-top shape at all times. Bikes are not toys. Graveyards are full of motorcyclists who were not doing things correctly. Most motorcycle fatalities could have easily been avoided. Don't be the asshole that leaves your Mother, Father, Sons, Daughters, Brothers, Sisters, Aunts, Uncles, Nephews, Nieces and friends mourning just because you had a selfish addiction to speed or a bike that was not in tip-top shape. More people love you than you know. Don't be an idiot.

I believe your friend has a Maxim X, (due to radiator) which is a 700cc bike due to the tariff that Ronald Reagan imposed on Japanese motorcycles over 750cc. I believe that happened in 1984. Subsequently, most 750cc bikes were downsized to avoid the tariff, which was set at a whopping 49% of the MSRP. Anyhow, the Maxim X has the Genesis 5 valve head, which at the time was quite advance in terms of air flow. No wonder why is pulled on your bike so hard. A regular 750 Seca (air cooled, 2 valve head per cylinder) would not be nearly as fast.
@Sn0wWh0rE4 жыл бұрын
I have the 750cc Maxim X. But I also live in Canada. The XJ750X probably don't find their way down to the states too often I bet.

There's no way it's Sub 400. With a full Tank Mine is 455 on the Nose. I could cut a further 5 maybe 10lbs with R1 Fork's but it's not getting anywhere close to 400lbs.

In the CB's Defense that is no XJ-750, Its an XJ-700 Maxim X. And Yes there's a significant difference. The 750 is an Air-cooled Twin Cam 2 Valve with a YICS Head. The 700 is a Liquid Cooled Twin Cam 5 Valve per Cylinder that's Very close to the Genesis Motor's used in the FZ's at that time.
@ReMarkAbleMagic6 жыл бұрын
I've owned both bikes (almost, mine was a CB900F with Chain drive and even faster), and the Maxim is just a quicker faster bike. Thing is, it looks like any other Yami 4, but hiding in that head is 5 valves per cylinder vs 2 for the Honda. That engine breathes so much better than the Honda, and the Maxim is just built to go.
@Teramydog Жыл бұрын
that honda is a 16 valve head

Unless that is a Canadian XJ, the 85 is a 700, not a 750. Very little difference in power, but the displacement had to be reduced due to US import tariffs put in place at the time. I have a bone stock 85 XJ700 with 10,000 miles on it. It is surprising how quick the bike is, given that it is more than 30 years old. The wet weight on the stock bike is right about 500 lbs, by the way. Some of the DNA of the V-Max, introduced the same year, but in a smaller package.
@SneakyZeke6 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s a fun bike. I heard about the 700cc thing from some of my friends at a motorcycle scrap yard. I may be wrong about this but I believe if you get the 750cc crank from japan then you can swap it in and have a true 750cc
@boodasias5635 жыл бұрын
If you think that bike is fast for being 30+ years old, look into getting a v65 Sabre. Those bikes go well over 170 stock, and they only stop pulling hard at around the 150-ish mark. It isn't too bad in the quarter either, running mid 10's with a good rider when it's running good.

@SneazyZeke I bought mine yesterday, it’s my first bike! It has 60k miles on it. When you say fast, do you mean speed or acceleration ? Because acceleration is not that bad, you did 7.1, but I’m pretty sure you can get like 5 sec om the 0-60 with some more tuning. And for the speed, what is your top speed on it?
@SneakyZeke5 жыл бұрын
@Feyt I was talking more about acceleration, I'm not really a top speed guy because tat's where people get really hurt and things go wrong haha. I'm sure you could get faster than I did with some work. Mine wasn't jetted properly and the clutch was starting to go out. The fastest I ever went on it was right around 100mph (on a closed track in Mexico of course) and I know it had more in it, but I didn't really feel like pushing it that high.
@feyt48455 жыл бұрын
@SneakyZeke Thank for replying! I really like your channel btw and yup, I agree, speed is only dangerous for you and the other... and it’s not as fun as acceleration aha. Have a good one bro ;) Ride Safe!✌️
