In this video I will replace the serpentine belt on a 2012 Honda civic
Parts:
Serpentine belt OEM 31110-R1A-A01: amzn.to/3Mull3a
Tools:
19mm box wrench 0 degrees: amzn.to/3Iijyvr
-you can use this wrench if you do not want to use two wrenches together.
19mm combination wrench: amzn.to/3W6w2Mw
I used a 17mm wrench on top of the 19mm for more leverage.
14mm flex head wrench: amzn.to/3pEUM25
I used the same 17mm on top of the 14mm as well
19mm Socket 1/2: Deep Impact for lug nuts: amzn.to/42I0WgB
Panel Popper: amzn.to/3Y6WciH

Out of all the videos I’ve posted about working on vehicles, my 2012 Honda Civic stumped me on finding out how to access the tensioner and once you pointed it out, it took no time at all! Appreciate the video and keep on keepin on! 🤙🏼

thanks, did mine yesterday after watching several videos. One thing I did, since I was by myself, was loop an elastic through the belt and over the pointy post one the top motor mount? This held tension on the belt so it would not come off the lower wheels I put it on, but it also gave me some slack when needed to get it around other ones. Then it was still held tight at the top ready to go when I did the last pully on top. I started at the bottom in the wheel well. Took about 20 min, most of which was constantly checking my routing diagram. Go slow on the tensioner, I saw someone snap one off.

If the car has over 100k on the alternator , it is a good idea to change the alternator since the belt is off. I neglected changing it on my wife's BMW while doing basically the same serpentine belt procedure and it went bad and stranded my wife 100 miles from home. And it set me back a pretty penny since one is pretty much at the mercy of a shop and their labor and part fees.

The alternator is a part that is only replaced if it is faulty or not charging to its full potential. The Alternator going bad on your BMW I can say from experience is just bad luck and or coincidence since you had just replaced the serpentine belt. You can spin the alternator pulley and check if it is binding and consider replacement. You can have the alternator tested to see how it is performing to get a better idea on its health. But as a professional in the field I would not recommend an alternator due to mileage. I would only be able to present the state of health of the alternator explain the readings and the client would need to make the ultimate decision on replacement if it is currently charging as designed.

Belts not that hard to remove so I would highly recommend not changing the alternator. Most alternators will last over 200k

Do you always need to replace that idler pulley when you change the belt?

I changed the belt and the new belt makes a skeaky noise when I accelerate does that mean I need a certain brand of serpine belt ? U bought a good year brand
@friendlymechanic9778
@friendlymechanic9778 6 ай бұрын
I got the OEM belt from BMW. The noise could be coming from the belt tensioner. Or the new belt could a little too tight. I would first check the tensioner and see if the noise is coming from there. You can either spray some WD-40 at the pulley and see if it will quiet down. Just don’t spray too much because the new belt can slip off. Try and keep it close to the pulley only. A second option would be to grab a long screw driver, extension or a thin metal rod and use it as a stethoscope to listen for the noise. You really need to be careful doing this because the belt is moving fast and you don’t want that rod getting caught and pulled away from you.

What about the timing chain? Does it ever need to be replaced? My 2012 is at 92,000 and has had oil changes every 5,000 miles. What happens if the serpentine belt breaks? Will it cause interference? Are any of those pulleys using timing knotches?
@friendlymechanic9778
@friendlymechanic9778 10 ай бұрын
I am not an expert for Honda Vehicles but here are my thoughts. As far as timing chains there shouldn’t be a maintenance interval. You replace it if it breaks, stretches or if some timing chain guides break. Then you can replace it once it has been proven through diagnosis that it is defective. Since you have been keeping up with your oil changes I wouldn’t have any worry about damage to your timing chain at this point. The serpentine belt if it breaks will not damage any valves as the timing is kept with the timing chain. The only pulley that has a timing mark is the crank pulley. But it is only needed if the timing chain is adjusted. If you are just replacing the serpentine belt you can remove it and install it without worry of causing interference or damage to valves.

Hey so I’m thinking it might be time to replace my belt. Did you notice anything that notified you that it was time to replace your belt ? I’m having a squealing sound when I accelerate and a puttering when I come to a stop or idle. Do these sound similar or familiar to your diagnostics ?
@friendlymechanic9778
@friendlymechanic9778 10 күн бұрын
A squealing sound usually indicates a worn out pulley. It can be a belt tensioner or an idler pulley. Sometimes you can have a faulty alternator pulley, AC compressor pulley or power steering pulley. Also to note. Just because the pulley of one of these components is making noise doesn’t necessarily mean that component is broken. It can still work but just make noise. You can inspect the ribbed side of the belt and check for cracks or fraying on the sides of the belt. This is a good indicator that the belt should be replaced. The owner of this car just wanted the belt replaced because the car was coming up on 100K miles if I remember correctly. They didn’t want to wait for it to snap on them.

One came out nice, the other I broke the entire top off and the pin stayed in. I just left it that way since it still held tight.
