Corolla is not as budget friendly as you think. Here in Texas, all new 2025 Corollas, gasoline and hybrid, come with 3-4k in pre-installed port and dealer accessories. Since Corollas are in extremely high demand and low supply, the dealer refuses to bring down the price so you end up paying over MSRP. In my area, the supply of Civics is more so you can negotiate a bigger discount on the Civics. So the price difference between the 2 is not as big as you think!

The Civic is doing a good job pulling double duty and taking on Corolla and Prius. I test drive the Corolla and Civic and it is almost like two separate classes because they are made to accomplish different things. Civic is more premium and sporty while Corolla is going for reliability and efficiency. You can’t go wrong with either.

My accord hybrid gets mid 40s mpg going 70+80mph, high 40s mpg going 70mph, and low 50s when I keep slightly below 70mph (at 50F~60F). I do not hypermile but did notice that the mpg significantly improved after 2/3k miles on the odometer. The civic hybrid should get even better mileage. Pardon the fanboy in me but the civic beats the corolla/prius (I dare say the camry) hands-down in terms of efficiency, handling, and the premium feel.

I have engineering papers for the 2014 and 2018 Accord. They use earlier versions of the same system, but the biggest changes have been improvements to the motors and engines. Back then, the motor and electronics were 96% efficient when cruising between about 45 and 62 mph. They were 95% efficient between 25 and 90 mph. So it is not the speed that makes the difference between your experience and EPA ratings. It is changing speeds on the highway. It sounds wrong, but you need to add more energy to the car to go from 50 to 51 mph, than you do to reach 10 mph from a stop. 60 to 65 mph is the same as 0 to 25 mph. Regen braking makes this not as bad as with a gas car, but changing speeds takes you out of both this motor-efficiency band and the engine-efficiency band. Motors compare to the transmission, not the engine.They convert electrical power to mechanical, while an engine extracts stored energy. Honda's strategy is to optimize engine efficiency before transmission efficiency, and Toyota's is the opposite. This is why the engine in a Toyota is bigger than Honda's, but Honda's motors are bigger than Toyota's. Changing speeds often, and drastically, on the highway stresses Hondas more.

I wonder why the discrepancy? 💁‍♂️

@Realistick
@Realistick 12 күн бұрын
I could be wrong but my guess is that the highway testing was done between 55-65 mph (at the most). More so than other hybrids, this really relies on the electric motor, which like other EVs, is not near as efficient at highway speeds as it is in town. They do have that lock up clutch for the engine to help drive the wheels but I suspect that is also operating at too high of an rpm at highway speed to be very efficient too. I don't see it improving dramatically in warmer weather but this is all just my personal speculation. Thanks for watching!

My new Civic Hybrid Sport sedan has been getting around 36 mpg over the first 1,000 miles, mostly city driving in econ mode. Huge Toyota fan... Current Gen Corolla interior bores me to tears even though it's perfect and does everything you need it to. New Prius is beautiful, but too low to the ground and a little tight in the driver's seat for me. Civic is a great option. Especially with the hatchback. However I'm hearing about issues with rattles which is my #1 most hated thing in a car. I'd probably go with Camry, but I don't want a sedan with a trunk. I ended up buying a Subaru Outback, and although it's not nearly as fuel efficient, it meets all my other criteria perfectly. Hopefully they make a hybrid version in the coming years that i can trade up for.

Just FYI, The Civic may be more expensive (car price) but Toyota has a finance plan to take into account (in my opinion not the best) offering 17% fixed interest rate (at least where I live) vs a 9.99% or less fixed interest rate that Honda offers, making the 3 options in the same price range or even Toyota more expensive depending on how much down payment you leave (unless you buy the car in one exhibition which is not the case for most of the people). Just if someone is considering buying a car, think of it, and make the decision that best suits your necessity, economy and preferences. (I think the 3 cars are really really good with high quality building, safety systems and good looking (Civic Sport Touring Hy, Corolla SE Hy, Prius Limited) and are worth the price)

After the widespread 1.5L Earth Dreams engine issues, also the 3.5L V6 issues. I’m not willing to take it on faith that Honda can produce a reliable powertrain. This is also a new type of powertrain for them, further increasing the probability of issues. The Corolla has a proven powertrain with lots of years and miles to back it up. If your priority is reliability the Corolla is the clear choice, and I don’t think that the decision is very close.

0:21 "There's no denying that the new Civic has more going for it. But it also asks for more money." You are not taking into account three factors: Two are (1) _There_ _is _no_ "base" Civic hybrid and (2) Honda does not use optional packages. The closest comparison is the Corolla SE, MSRP $27,400 needs its premium package, raising that to $29,410, to compare to the Civic SPORT, $28,950. (Prices from company websites today.) 0:32 "It's competing against larger cars for that kind of cash." That's the third factor. It *_IS_* that larger car. It has 10% more passenger volume than a Corolla, and comes within less than 1 cubic foot of the Camry. Adding in all of the more premium materials you point out later, the Civic is the better deal by far. So if you compare it to Camry SE, the Civic handily wins every aspect except feature selections. 2:19 "Even if you spend this much money you still get the cheapest infotainment that Honda has to offer." Nope. It's upgraded from the base LX, but is not the Bose system. 8:02 "The end result is a car that feels much more like an electric vehicle." It is an EV. Not a "battery" EV, like a Tesla, but a "battery and generator" EV.
@Realistick
@Realistick 12 күн бұрын
It seems you need to listen more before typing! I mentioned the feature-differences right after pointing out the 5k price difference. Btw, you're leaving out the destination cost on the Civic Sport hybrid sedan ($30k) and the XLE is the better deal anyway. The civic, dimensionally, is still in-line with most compacts, inside and out (excluding the trunk). You need to drive the new Camry if you think the Civic is better in every way but features. I was not talking about the sound system when I said that at 2:19. The line "the end result is that the car feels more like an ev" came right after I explained how the powertrain works😂
@jeffjo8732
@jeffjo8732 11 күн бұрын
@@Realistick "I mentioned the feature-differences right after pointing out the 5k price difference." But you didn't point out how much $$$ the packages add. "Btw, you're leaving out the destination cost on the Civic Sport hybrid sedan ($30k)." And it was unclear to me whether you included it, even though you claimed you did. As of today, the Honda website says the Sport Hybrid has an MSRP of $28,950. The destination & Handling cost is $1,150, making $30,100. At 0:30 you said $28,845 which sounds more like the MSRP. I know things change over time, which is why I cite where and when I get prices. From Toyota's site, the Corolla SE hybrid is $26,255+$1,135=$27,400. So the destination charge difference ($15) is insignificant, which is why I just use MSRP. But it does look like I included D&H in one but not the other - my bad. (At 1:05 you cite $27,200, which does seem to include D&H but isn't current). This is a $2,700 difference - your $5K claim is compared to the LE. Apples to oranges. AND, this difference leaves out the $2,010 package needed to get features that are included in the Civic's MSRP. We are down to less than a $700 difference, for a much larger, and more premium, car. And the reason I commented here is that the $5K claim misrepresents the costs. "And the XLE is the better deal anyway." And starts almost $2,000 higher. "The civic, dimensionally, is still in-line with most compacts, inside and out (excluding the trunk)." No, it isn't. I rounded down to claim that 10% difference. The Civic is actually 11% bigger inside. At 99 ft^3 passenger volume, and 114 ft^3 total, the EPA rates it as a midsize car (the Camry has 100 and 115). Honda _targets_ the compact market by not including as many features as the Accord or Camry would have. The Corolla has 89 and 102, making it an EPA compact. The Prius has 91 and 115. Did you know that the reason it is a hatchback is not because of the market demand, it is because the EPA has no category for hatches? So it is rated with sedans, as a midsize car? But functionally, it really is a compact. The Civic hatch, at 99 and 123, is an EPA large car, functionally a midsize, and marketed as a compact. This is consistent across the lines: The Camry is midsize, and the Accord is large. "You need to drive the new Camry if you think the Civic is better in every way but features." Maybe. You need to compare them honestly - the Civic is supposed (I haven't tested) to be quicker and have better handling, which is what I meant. It has a more sporty ride, so not as luxurious. But that is a tradeoff, not a superiority either way. "I was not talking about the sound system when I said that at 2:19." Okay, I interpreted it to specifically. But the sound is part of the infotainment system, and it is not the cheapest. And I don't think the non-sound parts are inferior in any way, the only part that is cheaper is the size of the screen. "The line 'the end result is that the car feels more like an EV' came right after I explained how the powertrain works." And I wanted to emphasize that it *_IS_* an EV. That there are two definitions for "EV" that get used, and one is wrong. Most electric advocates think it means a car that stops at a charging station instead of a gas station. That's a plug-in car, or *_Battery_* EV. It actually means a car that is driven by an electric motor, which is exactly what you described.

@@jeffjo8732 It's unclear that I included destination in the graphic that says "MSRP W/ Dest." in large letters?🥸I don't have the time to address all of those things and I don't think it matters what I say anyway. Have a nice day 🤟

@@Realistick It was unclear since the price you said was MSRP+D&H was actually $45 less than the current MSRP alone.

@@jeffjo8732 You're still misquoting the graphic🥳it says $29,845 for the base. I made the graphic a month ago or so and sometimes they adjust the price a little. (currently 30,100). But sometimes typos can happen too so I don't mind fact checks but if it's off by 200-300, it's usually just a little outdated and not worth your time.

There’s something very off about the new Civic design. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what makes it so awkward looking to my eye but I think the proportions are an issue. It’s like they took the Accord and shrunk it but forgot to adjust the spacing on the headlights and reduce the size of the taillights. Speaking of, sorry Honda but those taillights are ugly and at this price point they should be all LED. The Corolla on the other hand looks great from every angle IMHO.

My daughter has the corrolla. The backseat is terrible if you have passengers. The civic is worlds nicer, but you will pay more.

The video got better after you brought in the Prius, not because I want a Prius but because it had been an Apples to Oranges comparison (Corolla to Civic) and suddenly became a 'Shades of Toyota Hybridization' vs Civic. It left me wanting more info on other Hybrids. So: IF you want a 2nd vehicle to go with your Miata, and you want a Hybrid, what would YOU get??? (one for you and your roommate/partner/...) Budget aside, take us on this Quest! It is fair to compare based on price, but features, mpg's, drivability/fun-factor & how hwy speed impacts economy, style, warrantee, etc., ALL are part of the mix. Looking forward to your reviews of other Hybrids: Honda CRV, Mazda CX-50, etc... What about Ford/Chevy/GM ? Subaru Crosstrek and Forester may get my vote eventually. Shopping could be based on price or vehicle class. I would not be surprised if I buy a non-plugin Hybrid in the next few years: Manufacturer's Warrantee will be one of my considerations. I think this is an interesting Hybrid 'Rabbit Hole' to explore.

If I don't end up getting another sporty car (like a Civic SI or another GR Corolla) as a daily in the next few years, I'll probably get a hybrid so I'll try to make content around that in due time! Actually filming with a CX-50 hybrid this week and I just got access to two more brands for press cars (VW, Kia). Hopefully Ford will answer soon too. Forester Hybrid in April/May from what I have heard. Lots of options are popping up in the hybrid space so we'll have a lot of content like that this year along with Miata stuff too!
