Thank you
Hi
This Honda Civic i-shift gears actuator was brought to me to "check"... as was believed that was not working...
(Which might well be the case still...🤷‍♂️)
Anyway, the reason this was brought to me, was because someone else apparently diagnosed it a being faulty...
Anyway, all explained in the video... including the twist... which is right at the end...
Hope you enjoy the video.
Any questions or comments put them below.
Like always, thank you for watching!

However !!, - Everyone seems to be missing an important point here, - There has to be an ELECTRONIC Gear Selector, too ! (Which is responding to the 'selected control instruction' by the driver...)

"I've been working on cars for 15 years"... I hope you smiled at him and walked away. Well my father loves telling other people he's been driving a car for over 50 years and he's the most dangerous and incapable driver I know. The passage of time doesn't make a person good at anything in many cases it is the opposite. Love your videos, your thoroughness, logic, attention to detail and pride in your work. That is not up for debate, never doubt yourself from someone's arrogant attempts at shaming you. Being humble shows good character to me. You never stop learning, as someone said to me many years ago... "the more you know, the more you realise you don't know"

What does it matter what the part is called. The issue is have you carried out a repair on that part to the best of your ability. The answer is YES. Their mistake was not giving you the complete car to diagnose. And your error of judgement was to attempt to repair a part that was removed from the car without your diagnosis. Keep up the good work and don't let it worry you.

As a retired engineer, correct nomenclature of machinery is everything when trying to describe a problem. In my book, "x selector" is an user operated device to control a particular system. A "x actuator" is a device that moves another upon command. I admire you for your patience and restraint. Breathe, me friend.....

Gear selector to me is the part on gearbox, what the gear actuator connects to. Inside the car is more likely to be called the gear shift selector or obviously on a manual it would be the gear stick. Even on a MANUAL CAR they have a gear selector whats on the gearbox, the gear cables would connect to it. Understand people use different words for similar items.

Hi Luis! In toyota MMT there are shift motor and select motor< so maybe in hondas they are the same, that is why maybe it was colled "gear selector". And in toyotas MMT mechanical wear of the actuator assembly is the cause of the failure and not the motors. Also hot glue doesn't seem a decent quality repair, especially under bonnet where it is hot and the glue may become liquid again. I understand that conversation went wrong and that is the result. Thanks for the video!

My instructor told me that you can have 15, 20 ,30 years of experience doing the wrong thing, Got some cars that where down for months, years Showed up and got fixed in 3 hours lol and I`m 22 when I show the mechanics the problem and try to explain how I get to the solution which most people won`t tell them, there start to get very defensive and talk about I don`t know anything, there working on cars for 30 years, I just start fixing cars so my word is nothing bla bla bla, Somethings I do not know, No one knows everything but guys like you who share there knowledge and others, is who make the Automotive industry have some kind of hope for the younger one`s like me and others coming up. Admitting you don`t know something and looking for help, If I was that mechanic I would be happy to get any assistance possible.

Totally agree with you, Luis. Not worth wasting your time on clueless parts swappers unfamiliar even with basic terminology. As a side note, just for fairness' sake, Japanese manufacturers indeed tend to choose funny names for their parts and assemblies. Toyota part names and DTCs, for instance, do sometimes make little sense, don't they?. However, if an English person working for Honda calls "gear selector" on it, I think it is safe to assume he meant the lever assembly between the front seats. I also appreciate your fair way of treating these people, I must say you are very-very British about it.

When the gear does not change or gets stuck its the actuator. I paid £1800 to Honda for a reconditioned one (gear would get stuck in 2nd). The 2nd time I paid £320 to a guy who came to my car and fixed it outside on the drive. Each time the symptoms were fixed with replacing actuator seals, brushes and reprogramming - The reprogramming was crucial & wont work without it. I am told there are 3x actuator`s in the I-Shift.

No, No, No, No, if i'd been working as a professional mechanic on cars for 15+ years I am sure I would be a bit more savvy on how to diagnose a fault, or i'd at least take it somewhere that did. It sounds to me like this "customer" is trying it on, I would 100% avoid this person, who knows what bodge it scarper antics they have been up to on other cars. You are right to avoid, don't want another "my car radio isn't working since you touched it" knob head! Keep doing what you do, it helps more people than you know, I would be far happier to bring you the entire car and ask you to fix it than to take it to some dodgy garage, you take your time and diagnose and fix it correctly, others just throw parts at it and go "oh it doesn't work still". People need to get their heads out of their asses as you are one of the best I've ever seen at doing this job, and if they want to argue with you then just walk away, you don't need it!

Hi Luis, Description of components on cars can vary from mechanic to mechanic, and even dealers will have different descriptions of components especially when ordering parts over the phone it can be a real problem (wrong parts ordered etc). I'm in the car trade my self and if there's any doubt i'll ask the parts person to email me a picture of the relevant components and then it's as simple as picking the corresponding numbers from the diagram and then everyone knows what's going on...

I stopped the video at 14 minutes to comment . I will watch till the end but Luis , c´mon . You did your job testing and performing maintenance on the actuators like you were asked to . You " know " the history of the car . Without the actual car in your possession you can´t fix it . Your job stopped at he14 minute mark . Edit . So I was partly right . You did the right thing not taking this car . I remember similar problems that I had when Ford came out with their " smart " alternator . I got called every bad name in the book because I told a " mechanic " that his alternator was good but he installed it on the car and it didn´t charge . When I told him that it was not an alternator problem hell broke loose . His client decided to buy a brand new alternator which didn´t solve the problem obviously and later that client wanted me to repair his car . HAHA . Sad for the client but I do not exist to be treated like dirt and neither do you .

I recently had a "discussion" with a used car salesman that was apparently an "experienced mechanic of over 30years", yet he didn't grasp how a clutch works, what it does or how its put together. According to this guy who i won't name (Adam from value cars York😅) you can tell if a clutch plate is completely worn out by putting the car in 5th gear, and the handbrake ON, that if you release the clutch that the car will stall!! The exact opposite of what a worn out clutch would do, a completely worn out clutch would just slip and smell and the engine would rev freely. It just shows, some people don't want to understand what's happening or to learn, they just want to argue and be found "right" and you always get to the point where you have to realise either, A) theyre stupid or B) they think that you're stupid and so make up things and lie

I also smile inside if I help someone find an answer to a problem with my channel 🙂. The clutch actuator gives loads of trouble on these. The brushes fail, similar to what you done in this video. This causes a no start condition & throws a P0810 fault code in transmission. I’d love if you checked it out on my channel & I will put up a link in the next comment 😉 I really enjoy your videos 🙏👍

Would've been interesting to know how to test the i-shift gear selector to see if it's working. Got an mk8 2007 Honda Civic with P0810 clutch operation problem, P19FF clutch friction coefficient learning value out of range (permanent codes) and brake switch fault, but forgot the code. Only borrowed a snap on to read the codes as my cheap one couldn't read them. When I bought it, it started and ran just fine. Then wouldn't go out of 0 into neutral to start. Then somehow got into neutral but wouldn't start. Found out the first inertia switch wasn't pushed down so fuel wasn't going to the injectors. Then it started and got it into gears somehow. Now it won't get into Neutral anymore. I believe I should try and re-learn the learning value and change the brake switch, tho it does seem to turn on the brake lights. Would it actually be a bad gear selector? When I first got the car back down from the trailer, it worked fine but then died and wouldn't change gears, it was in automatic mode at that time. Also, wanted to add. When looking in the engine bay, it seems like the actuator wants to move, but it cannot. That's when gear selector is put in Neutral mode.

Could be the gears actuator... like the one on the video... if you say it is trying to move... could be stuck or something... or gearbox.. Nothing like check also live data, and obviously dismantling and inspect... 👍👍👍

The problem the car has is the ignorant arrogance of the hack mechanic. The reason he attacked you is you were exposing his incompetence and the owner new it which is why he asked you to fix it.

There is only one thing called Gear Selector, on a automatic transmission vehicle. But then again..... everything is about interpretation. I think you should let them fix the car on their own.

I have question outside of this topic. It's about setting aftermarket car audio amp voltage(AC volts) at the speaker output wires. The amp is 1 channel(monoblock), i'm told to play a 50hz test tone and connect a multimeter at the amp speaker leads (the ones that go to subwoofer). i need to set the AC voltage at the wires(using the Gain knob) to 24.5 volts AC while playing the 50hz test tune.. The question is - do i need expensive RMS multimeter , or i can do this with my 20$ one? The sinewave is 50hz.

What a fail on the 15 year mechanic if he just mixed up the parts and started throwing parts at the car and just scaning the car for codes or live data should be enough to confirm gear selector operation. As you said without seeing the car its imposible to diagnose.

Scan the car... and go from from there... You can obviously visually check, see if there is anything that looks odd... But other than that, you either scan it to have a better understanding of what might be wrong, or anything else will be pure guess work... 👍👍👍

You got way too much pride and you think you know to much, you could have at least open the electronics and check for moisture or damaged components it's obvious you just wanted to make a quick buck. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 The electronics where assembled in way that were not meant to be serviced... Opening them, most likely would result in further damage... also, once plugged into the car, was easy to see if was anything wrong with them... would be a waste of my time to disassemble everything when the check could be done in two minutes with the proper scanner... As for the quick buck... you don't even know if I charged him... so refrain from talk about what you don't know... As for Patreon... all the content published in there, will later be here on KZbin... If you don't want to support, wait.. it is that simple... Lastly, I don't know everything, and have never claimed such thing... actually, I do this for the fun and learning... Still, thank you for watching! P.S. Yes, I take pride on what I do... can't see how can that be a negative thing... 🤷‍♂️
