Hi Robert. I'm glad you love your 2018. I've had mine from day one and she now has almost 68k miles on her. Amazing, comfortable (I'm 6'4 and 250 lbs), big car feel. I'm going to encourage you to disregard this video as anything more than illogical. First of all, he is getting on and off the freeway which will really mess with the mileage. Acceleration kills it. I'd encourage you to find a great route that puts you right on the freeway as quickly as possible (not 10 miles away) with a full charge and then set the CC and go until it runs out. This video gives no real world results. I live 3 miles from the freeway and I get about 44-46 miles average out a full charge. I'm able to get about 48-56 miles in real world range out of my car at a steady state. This is based on a largely level stretch of Interstate 5 between Portland Oregon and Eugene Oregon. There are grades etc., and traffic can be tricky, but I do much better, overall, than just the miles I started with at a steady pace of about 65-70 mph.

Nice video. I did a test like that, twice, in my clarity. Totally flat interstate. No traffic, 70 MPH, cruise control on. No climate control. Day time, nice temps, I went 39 miles pure EV. When my clarity was like 4 months old, I did same test. But it was at night so headlights were on, but no climate control. That time I got 36. 4 people were in car both tests. I was glad to see my range didn't go down any in over a year. It actually went up 3 miles.

I believe the Clarity was made for consumers who live in big cities such as Los Angeles/Orange County. The Clarity in the city is amazing. Since Southern CA weather is not drastic, it doesn't impair the EV battery so the efficiency of the EV battery is more accurate in terms of range. I can utitlize 50 miles of EV and drive around different cities the whole day and come back to plug in, and repeat the same process the next day. But I would say in Las Vegas, Henderson NV during the fall/winter. The EV battery gets hurt bad. The cold weather impacts the EV range greatly. I would see the EV full charge around 34 miles and the miles deplets a lot quicker with an estimate of 3 miles EV range displayed on the dashboard that translate to 1 to 1.5 of real road miles. I do hope EV batteries will improve in the future but I believe Toyota is working on their solid state batteries that can withstand cold weather and can handle uphill without losing a ton of EV miles. Thank you for this awesome video! 😀

I never use EV on the highway. It reduces the battery allocation for local miles by resetting its perceived range. I use EV local and switch to HV as soon as I get on the highway. As a result, I regularly get 54-59 local miles from the EV Battery charge unless its winter snd I'm using heat. You have to use the Clarity technology intelligently; that's what I like about this car. By understanding how it works you can really leverage the technology to optimize range and reduce operating costs. If you only use the car daily for highway commutes, then maybe local EV miles aren't important to you. I drive a lot locally and only need to do highway driving 2 or so times per week.

This makes sense if you don't have enough range to drive 100% EV on your trips. But, if you are needlessly using the ICE, it makes no sense. In other words, first priority should be minimizing gasoline usage..

@@michaelfriedman2221 Actually, that's not how the car is designed. It's designed to be most energy-efficient on battery-only at 45 mph and under, and most energy-efficient in hybrid mode at over 45 mph where the car switches between gas and battery depending on demand. WHICH energy source was used most efficiently depends on the car speed -- the car design and energy modes are most efficient when split this way over (in hybrid) and under (in EV only) 45 mph. There are plenty of expert videos online explaining the power train and the technology. I watched plenty before buying the car.

The most range I’ve seen in my clarity was 52 miles on ev range and when it get colder, it’s down to like 30 miles. When you run the heat, defroster, heated seats, the battery dies much faster. And the winter tires are for safety but do effect the range too

Thanks for your comment, Clarity can only charge at level 2, so DC fast is out. DC fast uses a CCS plug, which is not compatible with with the J1772 plug of the Clarity. Enjoy your car! You’ll love it!

Yeah this car hates being on E on battery. What mode do you mostly drive it on? I am new to the Clarity and have been using HV mostly and then EV when driving home.
@SJCDAVE
@SJCDAVE 3 жыл бұрын
Luciano, I have a 2019 Clarity and on extended trips where there is no way to complete the drive on battery only I convert to HV when the range gets down to 15 miles. That allows the engine to run quietly while charging the batteries as I complete my trip. Once I am close enough to home I cancel HV and drive home quietly. Using HV this way prevents the engine from the high revs necessary to power the car at highway speeds when the battery is drained. I still get my 40 miles on battery overall and as a bonus I don't ever get the higher noise from a high revving engine.
@avecrux333
@avecrux333 3 жыл бұрын
I have a 2021.... phenomenal car. I get 53 local EV miles and switch to HV as soon as I enter the highway. If I'm going to be traveling a lot without the opportunity to charge the battery, I use HV Charge mode on the highway to store up local EV miles. The only time I hear ICE engine noise is when I use HV Charge mode driving locally at local traffic speeds. When I use HV or HV Charge mode on the highway, I don't hear anything. The car is super quiet. I don't ever let my battery get to zero; I don't think that's good for any EV lithium battery. I usually keep it above 20%.

You’ll average between 50-70 MPG depending on how much you drive, and how much you charge. If you drive a lot, it can save you a ton of money, especially if you’ve got a 20-60 mile commute. Let me know if you have any other questions, I’ve got a bunch of videos about the car on this channel. Happy to help, Cheers!

So when EV Runs out, how do you get good mpg? Does the battery charge back up when regenerative braking? Thanks
@Aslash304
@Aslash304 2 жыл бұрын
The regenerative braking always helps the range go back. The Clarity has a mode called “HV charge mode” which will use gasoline to recharge the battery if you choose to use it. It it not very efficient. After your EV mode “runs out,” (it’s never all the way out of battery, as it is crucial to the entire power train), it functions as a normal hybrid car, and uses as much battery as it can build up from normal driving.

@@Aslash304 ok great, so example you get 35 miles on EV then like 50 mph on Hybrid
@Aslash304
@Aslash304 2 жыл бұрын
@@redbaron2448 if you go 35 miles on EV, then your car uses gas when it needs to, and uses EV when it can. It essentially becomes a Honda Insight or Accord Hybrid. EV mode is 100mpg equivalent, and the Clarity gets about 30-40 mpg on gas when it’s out of EV range.

I sold it with just under 30,000 miles. The most common failure is the HV battery. Making it a brick
@ronbotex
@ronbotex 3 жыл бұрын
Sad it was discontinued but with so few produced it's not surprising. I have a 2021 Insight which has better availability but still has poor sales. Just wait till gas hits $10/gallon and then you won't be able to get any electrified vehicle. We'll have the last laugh then, although you can expect the price of electricity to skyrocket along with the fuel cost. May be a problem with currently grid capacity as more of the plug-ins come online and thousands are charging them at night.

Sorry to say it, but this test is a fail. Getting on and off the freeway eats into EV miles and you didn't keep a steady speed. I'd love it if you would reshoot this when the car is fully charged and close to a freeway where you can get right on and set the cruise and not deviate. No getting off and back on etc. My 2018 regularly gets 8-15 miles more than the showing range in steady state driving. Grades and regen are a part of the experience and why these cars are so amazing. I regularly get over 350 miles of combined range out of my car (I've gotten as high as 395 on an extended trip) and regularly see 52-55 mpg overall in combined driving. EV only range, as you clearly state, varies by temperature and previous charge. I've found that the best method is to discharge the battery entirely three times and recharge it to get the best overall utilization out the battery.
@Aslash304
@Aslash304 Жыл бұрын
I don’t live near the freeway. If conditions have to be that specific to achieve the range you’re getting, maybe that range can only be achieved with that set of circumstances. Sorry I failed. I reported what happened to me. Sorry it was so disappointing.
