Really an excellent job on this video, and showing a nice DIY method. There is a full pump ring removal tool available, and it's adjustable. They can be found on Ama z0n and similar places. I see that you found the fault was in the plug connector (in your part 2 of this repair) so that's great! Nicely done! I have an '05 with 5spd manual (I'm in the US) with 277,000mi on it, and I've been thinking that I should purchase a ring removal tool, and a fuel pump, and throw them in the plastic spare tire well (Honda calls it an ice chest on on the US cars, because the spare tire is mounted on the rear door). I hate to pre-emptively replace the factory Honda pump, because the quality of automotive parts "now" is so poor. But having a spare, while on a road trip, might be prudent.

I've never had a problem with genuine CRV fuel pumps, the spare car has 180K miles on it with a poor transmission. Don't like amazon as they don't pay correct taxes and put everyone else out of business, cheers

Hi Andy if you've pushed the tank bank then it's possible the tank is dented and stopping the sender moving up and down might be worth a look underneath. Hope this helps 👍
@TheInfoworks Жыл бұрын
Rob, maybe but it's a plastic tank. I'm going to have to find a way of testing the gauge externally. All part of the thought process, cheers

@@TheInfoworks take your fuel pump and sender from your old CRV empty all the fuel then connect plug it in to your current car and with the ignition on move the sender by hand and watch the fuel gauge to see if it moves 👍

@@robb80 yep, that's a plan, and within the pump unit I can unplug the pump so it does not run dry, cheers

My trick in the past with things like this is to take the bulb out. So you can have an empty fuel gauge but it is not illuminated. I am pretty sure that you have a decent grasp of your mpg on this car by now Andy, just run it full to full and keep it topped up. Use the trip mileage to keep tabs on the next fill. Or bring it to the honda garage!

Owen, yes be pragmatic, but if it is E5 earth point I would like to make sure that any damage there is only to this earth and not some other earth that will in time drop me right in it. Honda dealer and spend the equivalent of the cars value to get it fixed, stealerships, cheers

Hats off to Honda.....thier design process is spot on. They thought about the fact that a vehicle would have to be serviced at some point..why make it hard?

Cecil, yes maybe, but the fuel filter is on the pump and it's a maintenance item, so that's a bit daft, cheers

I need the tool you made. I’m stuck just trying to unscrew the black pump lid. How much for me to use it and I’ll send it back?😊please

With my ancient land rover I used to test the gauge and wiring by shorting the feed to the level sensor to ground which gave full scale deflection on the gauge. That might be a bit risky though if yours is wired via the ECU which it might be.

David, yes the modern cars are far too complex. Maybe use a resistor to limit current flow, cheers

I hate stumps left too high in woods too Andy - especially when they are at shin height... When your tank got pushed back, did it strain the wires in the back of the connector that plugs onto the pump at all ? The boot floor cover plate holds the wire, but the connector moved backwards below it - if there wasn't enough slack in there, it may have yanked on the fuel sender wire perhaps ? Since it does the same thing with your old sender unit, the thing common to both setups is the wiring in the car. Just an idea, you've probably been there already. Cheers, Dave
@TheInfoworks Жыл бұрын
Dave, yes there's enough slack, a new video up tomorrow. There's no signal to the sender unit, so I'm now thinking that there is a wiring problem in a different circuit behind the tank where it may have been impacted. A difficult and messy investigation is required, cheers

On some 2nd gen models the fuel filter is external and located under the gas tank near the left rear strut.

Interesting, is there no suction filter at all? cheers
@nolongeramused81354 ай бұрын
@@TheInfoworks Not really sure. My service record isn't showing that it's ever been replaced (nearly 200K miles), so when I have a major service done in the near future I'm addressing it. I'm sure Honda's official position is "if it's still working don't touch it." but I have a more proactive approach to it.

5 pins on the electrical connector so presuming two for the pump and three for the meter. Perhaps the meter is like a potentiometer and has three legs? The older meters went low resistance on full tank and high on an empty tank. Perhaps your ECU defaults to empty when an out of range figure detected. Looking forward to the next installment.

Understand where you're coming from in making tool for careful removal. However to me it's a modern car, one expensive fault away from being crushed, therefore a hammer through screwdriver is all its worth. You could spend your time more effectively making a tank guard.
