Hey man, I know I'm a bit late on comments for this video but pull the electrical tape off right now. The sticky stuff on the tape will loosen and goo up your cables because is gas/oil/heat/weather. It never belongs on a bike. I learned the hard way. Instead get some self vulcanizing tape. It's cheep and works great if you insist on wrapping. Just do it or you're going to hate yourself in a year or 2. Thanks for the great vids. Great job!

Great to see someone taking a common sense approach to the wiring. Not a fan of solder myself - I've noticed the guys who deal with fixing older wiring commenting that it cracks under vibration, but I'm not going to argue with anyone else about it! :)

Thanks, only way I can do it is to sit down with a cup of tea and really think about what's next, especially if you have to trace yourself back with a multimeter (next week's video). Nice tip about the solder, the current harness is a mix of solder and plugs, I'll keep an eye on them :)

No matter what you do it suck fixing old wires. If you use connectors instead they will be properly connected and break like it's soldered or be too loose and you get a bad connection. Personally I think the only way to go is replace everything if it's an old bike.

How I hated this job when I restored my 50cc Simson (East German moped). You got the bike looking like a bike with tank and seat and everything, and then you put it all down so it looks like scrap again.. good job mate, can't wait to see it running!

Agreed, I hate taking the tank and seat off as it looks so incomplete.

No, neither mine, a lot of time and very little gain. YEah the GS550 will be back on in a week-ish with a newly welded exhaust and engine paint.

What i use for wrapping my cable harness is repair tape from griffon. My hardware storen has it in the plumbing isle. Its a rubber that only stick onto itself, so you get a watertight harness and no sticky mess when you one day have to peel it back. Sometimes i do use the vynil tape when i can’t reach the right spots. And also use flux on the solder. Electrical is a boring job but has to be done. And when done right you never have to do this boring job very soon

Nice job on the solder and heat shrink. Most people use crimps, which looks ugly and corrodes. I would've put some solder on the battery terminal wires also. You should get some handlebar end signals. That way it doesn't look like you have any. Here in the U.S. they count the handle bar signals as front and rear signals so all you need is the end cap signals on your handlebars.
@forthebold
@forthebold 6 жыл бұрын
Yup, good call, scrapped my idea with the sticky stripped turn signal and purchased a set of bar end ones today.

Hey mate, your doing a great job. I'm just a bit worried about your soldered joins. Doesn't look like the solder is flowing well because the wire isn't hot enough. This could cause the connection to break then it's only relying on the heat shrink to hold it together. Have seen this plenty of times before and can be a real pain when trying to diagnose when it causes a problem. Or I could be wrong and your doing a mint job.

I'm not looking forward to this myself.. but you make it look a bit easier. Curious where you bought all of your bolts for your bike. Mine are mostly all.. needing replacement. Some are alright but I really need to swap most. Did you get a set?

I buy them all individually by measuring them all separately etc, laborious but cost effective.

Hi bub love the videos Been watching for a long time, I'm about 80% in to my cx500 have a problem with my wiring not sure if you can help!? I've changed my indicators for LED an I've changed the flasher relay for led an the switch gear, the gray wire from the relay contents to the indicator wire (blue orange) they all flash like hazards an take the gray wire away flash left an right with no blinks. It's like it's missing something any help would be good.

To be honest the original wiring is complicated. I just use a 2 pin relay on mine.

I agree it looked awesome on your cx because it added to the modern twist of the headlight and the levers. I think I'm probably going with a mini analog speedo with indicator lights in it. The one I want is in Km but I'd like mph. That's how it works though. I appreciate the response.

I find a cheap but good alternative to that horrible gooey electrical tape for re-wrapping a loom and sections is the TESA tape. It's low tack but does a neat job at a good price.
