I just changed out my belt yesterday, and I learned thankfully without the belt cover on to make sure the belt has some slack when installing the variator cover. The first couple tries I had the belt too close to the center of the variator which made the nut spin off when running.

Thanks for you Helix Videos, I just had a few suggestions, when putting the belt back onto the front variator, I like to turn the variator a few times as im torqueing the nut,,, it alwasy ensures proper belt travel, also I dont use an impact on either the variator or the clutch, I prefer it torqued to spec as I feel these 2 components need to be, other bolts not so much, they both have a torque range, I do the variator at 65 ftlbs and the clutch at 43 ftlbs, any gy6 spanner tool will work to hold them, I put a longer breaker bar on my spanner tool and it really works well,,,, variator, clutch, axl nuts, I like those torqued to spec, but im very old school and really exact when I do this, thanks again Tony for your videos

I'm sorry for the maintenance video, but I think I found the problem with your bike in this video. That is because when you squeezed the driven pulley by hand and released it, the pulley did not return but held in place. This is probably because the pin hole in the torque cam is deformed and the movement is no smooth. Or the center spring may be weakened. I have an '86 HELIX and I had the clutch OH'd a few months ago and the hole in the torque cam was deformed and not moving properly. If you correct the hole in the torque cam with a file to make it move better, when you squeeze the drive pulley by hand and release your hand, it should not stop like in the video because it tries to return to its original position by the power of the center spring. Normally, it should not be possible to assemble the belt without binding the belt with something or clamping the pulley. Smooth movement of the torque cam is very important for acceleration and re-acceleration, and I recommend that you disassemble the torque cam once and inspect the torque cam holes for deformation. Also, the center spring weakens with age and affects re-acceleration, so it is a good idea to replace it if it becomes weak. Have a good HELIX life!

Thank you, for the extremely well descriptive comment. I am just learning. I have seen what you are talking about when pushing on the friction housing against the contra spring, releasing belt tension and then retentioning, when the housing was released. I thought it might be possible that there is just a good amount of friction between the centrifugal centrifucal clutch pads, the housing and general slight corrosion? Anyways, I guess anything is possible. Thank you for the insight and digital image. You fwo both; are far more expert in this whole subject than I.

Hello, I need some help. I had removed the crankcase cover and put a new rubber gasket on. when i went to reinstall I noticed i still had a small gap along the left bottom side. its like a quarter inch off.. its so strange because theres nothing in the way and everything is clear. Is that supposed to be like that?

Great videos Tony :-D Do you have any tricks on how to remove the front variator without an impact wrench? - or is that something you should avoid?
@1tonysgarage2 жыл бұрын
Thanks they do make a clutch holder but I have always just used a impact
@AudreysKitchen2 жыл бұрын
@ Thomas Hollaender I struggled with it at first, but I was able to get it with an 18 inch breaker bar and 22mm socket. Make sure to treat the nut well as if it's stripped you're in a really bad spot. I used a "variator holding tool" from Amazon which had little prongs which went on the curved parts of the variator and the handle braced itself against the "bell" of the clutch pulley assembly. Good luck and let me know how it goes (if you haven't done it already)

Ended up buying a cheap electric impact wrench. It couldn't release it at first, so i had to heat up the bolt (very carefully, as the heat goes to the aluminum disc and therefore could damage the belt).
@andrewpackard7 Жыл бұрын
I was interested in how tight the bolt should be I noticed you just use an impact wrench gun I don’t have an impact wrench gun the first time my son put it on my hand with a ratchet wrench and it wasn’t tight enough I remember my father used to use a torque wrench which is something you use when you don’t want something too tight you just use an impact wrench so I don’t know how important that is I also don’t know why my bolt came loose they should’ve back threaded it shouldn’t they have reverse threaded that bolt
@1tonysgarage Жыл бұрын
No it’s not reverse thread not sure what the torque spec is. I would say that Honda would be able to tell you if you went by a Honda dealer they may be able to look it up. if you use a torque wrench, you’ll have to find something to hold the clutch Bell from moving.

I have an 86 that idles smooth as silk but on runup, it has a terrible bikewide vibration that rattles the bike ad high rpm. Any thoughts? I have a new variator and clutch and belt. My "guess" would be worn motor mounts. It only has about 8K miles though. Appreciate any thoughts.

Well try duck taping the rear shock springs. Or if u could find a upper or lower rad hose you could use that. Split the hose and put it around the springs and hose clamp it. See if that helps

You have to push the belt down at the same time you r squeezing it together.

Hey Tony, on your wife's Helix since it isn't modded out performance-wise like yours, what is her top speed? The reason I keep asking you your top speed on your helixes is because I'm trying to figure out if mine is normal or not? I'm a big guy and mine only tops out at around 65 miles per hour which is plenty fast enough for me in the city.
