Honda engines are bullet proof, have had 3 Honda's now, 2 VTECs (1.6, 1.8) and a 2.2 diesel that's got 198k miles, all with no problem. They not luxurious vechiles but they are very reliable. Great test Thomas

I have a Honda Civic with 149,000 miles and still feels tight and punchy. It might be a little louder than a new diesel but for a 12 year old car it still feels like it is much younger. Credit to Honda.

Great review. I have the 1.5 CVT with pleather trim here in China. It's probably the best practical buy. Road conditions can be harsh here and the ride height is perfect for rougher roads. I feel for higher speeds the CVT transmission performed very well.. Up to 140km/h and the Revs settled back into lower range. After almost 2 years the car hasn't had one problem and is still going strong, which is very surprising considering the rough conditions over here in the countryside.

I have a Honda Jazz (I've owned three) and am considering a HR-V as a replacement -- considering the i-DTEC auto. The CVT gets a very bad press but providing you adapt your driving style, it's absolutely fine. A lot of car reviewers make a big thing of the perceived quality (and an obesession with soft plastic), based on a short period spent with the car, but Hondas are good to own over a long period due to their reliability and ease of driving. I've had several, and never had anything go wrong other than tyres and battery.

I just got one month a go with manual transmission and it drivers really nice. My opnion is that automatic transmissions are not good in all Hondas. Manual transsmision in HRV shifts so smoothly it makes me smile while driving. I am happy with HRV and I know i would not be if it had a automatic transsmision. ;-) I really like your KZbin channel. Thanks and keep doing a great work. ;-)

Great review Thomas, I have a Honda Odyssey 2005 2.4 Litre with 176'ks never had an issue with the engine or 5 speed auto transmission, I live in Australia and have done many long interstate trips in hot conditions over the summer with A/C running all the time. The HRV looks great and is a very practical car for its size and designed for city driving, I am looking forward to test driving one next week.

Really good review as always! Good job Autogefuhl! This car in Japan has mutiple engine choices including 1.5 gasoline (NA and Turbo) and 1.5 Hybrid. The hybrid version is mated with a 7-speed Dual-Clutch transmission, which sounds more interesting than the CVT. I have driven HONDA's CVT in a latest Accord, and I gotta say they make one of the best CVT! It's quite responsive, but, it's still a CVT.. don't expect to get much fun in terms of drivability. Japanese manufacturers always hide some highest technologies in their home market only and the HR-V (Vezel in Japan) is not an exception, it has lots of cool features and new technologies which you may only be able to find in Japanese market.

There's a reason they're called Honda *Motor* Company. Honda's 4 cylinder engines are rightfully legendary. They love to be revved. Change the oil regularly, and they will easily go 500,000 miles without any problems. Also a fan of Honda's manual shifters.... short throws, easy clutch with clear point of take up, and precise engagements. To this day, the overall best car i ever owned was actually a 1990 Honda Accord. It was put together like a swiss watch. Sold it in 2002 (for $2000!) with 480,000 miles. Aside from replacement of normal wear-and-tear items, Major Mechanicals on the car never broke. The engine, electrical, suspension (a weirdly exotic double wishbone setup on all 4 corners), and transmission were still working perfectly (and was only on the 2nd clutch!). It was Hondas like that car which built their reputation in the USA.

that is valid... especially with honda's made after 1999-ish. as for their home market share, this also makes sense in the 1980's and 1990's. Hondas of that era tended to focus mostly on clever mechanical engineering on even their most basic mass market cars (4 valve per cylinder alloy engines, VTEC, double wishbone suspensions, compound jewel reflective lighting, variable effort steering)... at the expense of fancy interior features, V6 engines, or (at the time) fancy electronics. Honda's were also late to the game in terms of ABS brakes and Airbags. this made hondas of the late 80's and 90's more expensive and less packed with choices or options than their Japanese competitors. (I think Honda started the trend of offering take-or-leave-it bundled options in 3 trim levels). they also only offered several passenger cars in the US at the time... unlike toyota, mazda or nissan (or even Subaru, Isuzu, Mitsubishi or Suzuki) which also made vans and trucks as well as many more passenger car models. Put simply: Honda spent more of their money on what went on under the hood than their competitors, and their prices reflected that. That generally meant Honda's of the time had an overall driving feel a class above their japanese competitors.

I drive a 2014 civic hatchback and despite its small engine and lack of power, its a lot of fun to drive on high rpms where ypu can feel the vtec. Its done 30k kms in 2 years and the engine has had zero problems! Honda engines seem to be really durable! My problem with the car is that it doesnt feel as small as i would like it to be in city driving and the interior quality isnt that nice :) But I love driving it, the 6spd manual is blast to shift through!

07 Civic with 175k km has never given trouble of any kind. Engine and gearbox work as they did when it was new. Don't plan on getting rid of it. It is nice to have a car that you can rely on over many years. I feel like turbos are nice for 5 years or so, but after about 10 years, something related to the turbo could give out and it would be too expensive to be worth repairing.

A friend of mine bought this car and I had a chance to go for a ride with it. I must say, I really liked it. For me it is very tempting to buy one of these. The fact that you can fold up rear seats is really a big plus for this kind of car. Especially if you are an ikea fan and buy some stuff every now and then ;-). I never quite understood, what a "compact SUV" is- It is not a sedan and certainly smaller than a medium sedan- it is not an off-road; it is not a hatch back so I can not see the point of buying it but still I feel irresistable to buy one! The only negative comment I can make about this vehicle is the lack of physical volume knob and minimum level of mechanical switches for the air conditioner. On a busy day or a busy traffic, you really want to do a lot of things by your "spine" i.e. you should not take time to "think". for example I should not focus on the touch screen and worry about whether I touched the right part of the screen. Lets accept the fact that, a touch screen is never 100% reliable compared to a physical knob or switch. I have two questions though: 1. How does its ground clearance compare to its siblings/competitors? Is it safe to go mild off-road on the country side? 2. I vaguely remember seeing something like, you see the blind spot via a cam on the display? By the way, I do agree that Autogefühl is one of the best (if not the best) car review channel on the net. Very clean, very clear, straight to the point and no annoying crap. thanks for this and please keep up the good work. Have a nice day...

I'm owner of a 8 years old Suzuki SX-4 1,6 120 PS, and after the testdrive i'm disappointed by the engine which is not dynamic enough (comparing to my car), the car doesn't give this pleasure during driving through bends... it's definitely not a sport car in any way. But I appreciate the comfort of seats and the quality of finish. And it's beautiful! I would buy this car with better engine.

Great review! Although you forgot you can also lean back the backseats, so you're not sitting entirely upright. Keep in mind, ECO mode limits the power of the engine

Very good review as you always do. I have a HRV love it, I drive it with the eco button off as it robbes some power off the engine and the difference in saving is negligable. The 130 HPs are high up so you have to rev the engine high to get them. Thank you.

Great video, Thomas. Image quality is really clear! I tested to drive HR-V. It was not bad, and easy to drive in the city. It's good car for people want SUV in the city only, imo. If I buy small SUV, I will buy Mazda CX-3.

Hi, you seems to be very kind on your opinion of the suspension. I find the suspension quite harsh. I noticed when you drove past some uneven road, the car seem to bounce a lot, which to me is very uncomfortable. You are right, it is not a high speed driving car. At 120km/h I can't help but feel the car is quite unstable. The only advantage of this car it is generous space within the car.

*Honda engines normally do that - they have v-tec variable valve timing, when u accelerate it switches and you get those high revs, but it was made that way.

Thanks for this video! I am very interested in this car actually, I appreciate the practicality, compact dimensions, a lot of space inside and naturally aspirated petrol engine. However, there's something missing in the HR-V, it's a bit boring, don't you think? A very reliable car, but it's not awesome - in my opinion. I'm now looking for Peugeot 3008 review - new and quite exiting option for a SUV.

Isn't this segment per definition a bit boring? Even something like the Inifiniti Q30 which is probably the most exiting in this segment. Costs more though. When talking about mini SUV's I think the Kadjar and Qashqai's are still the best offerings apart from this HR-V. When looking about excitement, don't go for a mini-SUV and go for f.e. a Civic which is well priced now, or de Astra, or A class if you want to pay a bit more...

Well, I don't quite agree with your thoughts. Let's take Mazda CX3 or it's bigger brother (or sister) CX5 - fantastic design outside and inside and they're typical examples of mini and compact SUV's. The only problem why I didn't buy neither of them is that CX3 has a very small cargo space and CX5 i a little too big for 1 person (I'm driving alone 80% of the time I spend in my car). Infiniti Q30 looks great but is a bit more expensive and a bit too flashy, "look at me"-kind-of-car :) And why SUV or a crossover? They're compact, comfortable and I can visit my friends in the countryside without a fear that I will smash my vehicle chassis offroad.

I am looking for manual petrol vehicle and investigating Mazda-cx3, Mazda-3, Honda Civic 2017 and Honda CRV? Though I was more inclined towards Mazda, but from practicality viewpoint , Honda cars seems to have bigger inside space available. what would you recommend in terms reliability and practicality for both city and motorway driving ?

great that u joined us. The CX3 has the best styling imho. The HRV makes the cheapest interior apperance. But it is super super versatile and offers much space for the size. Indeed u figured that out. Honda and Mazda engines are great, low consumption and good reliability. Indeed they come very close each in each segment, I would take the one that feels best from the driving feeling for you.

I have this car with cvt transmission. The cvt is definately NOT recommended, especially if you live in a hilly area. The car is slow has no power and really struggles. On the plus side it looks good with leather and panoramic roof and has loads of space inside.

It depends, I mean there are many people who basically use their smartphone as a navigation system so it is the quetion whether you really need one. If you mostly drive from city to city where you do not know any street, then it might be useful but for everyday drive in you hometowm probably not.

oh wow they cost similar for you? Might depend on the trim level. In Germany, HRV is 20 to 28 k and Sportage 20 to 40 k. So an entry Sportage is a great deal, but when you put more stuff in it, it will get more expensive than the Honda. Still if you consider this in total, the Sportage seems like a better deal at least with the prices here. Afaik in the USA and Japan, Honda are way cheaper

In my country (Serbia) Hondas are ridiculously expensive. Hrv is for example on par with Qahqai...so the point in having a smaller car with more space is kinda lost...and for the price of entry level 1.4 Civic you can buy either a 1.6 tdi dsg Golf or 1.4 tsi golf with 150 bhp.

I only sold it because some tired doctor fell asleep behind me in his Dodge:( This one is surprisingly bland, for a 21st century Honda. I personally cennot see the point of this segment - small pseudo-SUV... Juke, CX-3, Kaptur - I'd never buy any of these.

There's a great feature that was not mentioned... In the "zombie space" there's an HDMI port. You can use this to display video from any device with HDMI output - including screen from your phone.
