I use a cordless drill, lapping compound, superglue and an old valve.
@RadDadisRad4 жыл бұрын
Super glue the face of the old valve to the new valve, chuck it up in the drill, add lapping compound and run it at about 500rpm. I take a sharpie and draw all over the seat and the valve to figure out where the contact surface is. You can see what’s high and leaves and what is low and stays. I like to measure the depth at which I lap down from the valve face and also valve stem protrusion. Just because a machine shop cuts the seats doesn’t mean they cut them perfect. It also helps dialing in lash.

If they keep revving boosted engines with NA cylinder heads to stratospheric RPMs, they will keep dropping valves. They are unaware of the effect that boost has on the valve springs' ability to keep the valve closed when it is supposed to ne closed. hopefully they figure out this soon.
@legros7314 жыл бұрын
@@danielcgomez yes 40 psi on top of the valve at 10 000rpm change a lot of thing
@RadDadisRad4 жыл бұрын
Daniel Gomez lol, boosted engine with NA heads. That makes no sense.
@RadDadisRad4 жыл бұрын
A low rpm boosted engine can have lower spring/seat pressure than a NA engine with higher rpm capabilities. So to classify a cylinder head as “NA” or “boosted” is just hilarious. Has nothing to do with the classification of head, has everything to do with a decent builder.
@danielcgomez4 жыл бұрын
@@RadDadisRad a NA head is a cylinder head prepared for power production without the variable of elevated boost presence in the intake system(which can easily overcome the valve spring seat pressure, and not allow the valve to stay closed). Look up what can happen to an engine when the valves 'float'.

Oh, no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no... Never ever use old valves on fresh seats. Valves tend to wear concave, and the seat surface should be straight. There are grinding tools for different seat angles for making a flowing and sealing valve seat. then main machining is done with those, and the final sealing surface with paste and the actual valve. Yes you can make sealing valves with Phong's method, but Phong's method thins the lip of the valve causing all kinds of unnessessary issues down the road. Also one very important notion: Valve and the seat should be the same material. If not they wear unevenly causing leaks and other issues. One giant YES! Those dimples, Man! Excellent idea! No wonder that head has some serious flow. They could also be a bit smaller and closer together. The story behind those dimples is creating a surface of vortexes around the port, so that the incoming air has less restriction. Same thing happens with casting surface. Casting sand leaves those tiny spots, that create this vortex mat around the port for the air to pass through. This vortex mat also shortens the efficient diameter of the port, so smaller the dimple, thinner the mat, and wider the efficient diameter of the port, more air into the chamber.
@retsaoter4 жыл бұрын
They were old seats. He used the old valve just to smooth any rough spots. Better starting point for the new valves.
@oikkuoek4 жыл бұрын
@@retsaoter Furthermore a big no-no. Stock seats can't handle stainless valves, and this causes premature wear and leaks. Also old seats should always be machined with proper tools, they sell then nowadays so cheap, that money in not a valid excuse. If you can afford stainless valves, you can afford those valve tools. Proper valve seat gives you better flow, longer lasting valves and better seal, so higher compression and less valve float.
@legros7314 жыл бұрын
@@oikkuoek these valve tool are not good just go to the machine shop And stainless valve can go with stock seat stock seat are the best Messing with them is asking for trouble
@RadDadisRad4 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure dimples decrease the velocity of the air inversely increasing density. Bernoulli’s principle.
@RadDadisRad4 жыл бұрын
Simon Legros best is subjective, the information out there will prove that. Budget racing requires making compromises. Also I will agree that you don’t have to change the stock seats because if they aren’t over worn they are still good, if it’s not broke don’t fix it.
@johnnelson89563 жыл бұрын
That is not the correct method to lap valves. You should use a valve suction tool and apply firm pressure downward maintaining constant valve to seat contact.
@402motorsports43 жыл бұрын
John Nelson springs pull the valves from the bottom!!
@johnnelson89563 жыл бұрын
Unknown Journey valve springs have absolutely no bearing concerning valve lapping. Lapping is done to ensure better valve to seat contact. Basically you are grinding away microscopic layers of metal.
