I really appreciate your discussing the engine vibrations at 70 MPH, good to know.
@Jodyrides
@Jodyrides 5 ай бұрын
I don’t know that it’s a vibration from some thing being out of balance. I think it may be I harmonic .. when rotating shafts or other bitch start resonating at the same pitch quite by coincidence.. they were having problems with helicopters, having catastrophic failures due to harmonic resonance. I don’t know how they can avoid that, but it is something to be taken into consideration. When the Honda V twin chain drive single-sided, swingarm hawk, GT was on the market here in the United States, one of the major motorcycle magazines was covering a guy road racing one of those machines. He was having catastrophic failures of his crankshaft that they were blaming on harmonics.. sort of like a mirror on a motorcycle that goes blurry at certain RPMs. The way to fix that is to add a stick on weight to the glass on that mirror to change the frequency. It responds to. That is a harmonic. I never heard that the anti-700 engine or the anti-600 engine suffers from harmonics. But I do remember the chain drive 650 back in the 90s had those crankshaft problems at maximum RPMs on the race track

Great watching your progress with the NT. Mine came with a cigarette lighter type plug in the right hand side glove compartment.

The problem with magnetic tank bags has always been that grit getting between the underside of the magnetic flap of the bag and painted surfaces on the bike such as gas tank, acts like sandpaper and sands off or mars the finish of the tank and nearby plastics. This is especially common during long trips, or in a rainstorm- where road grit gets kicked up. I have used tank bags on trips, but I clean their underside often. I used much larger ones and it was always a pain to the gas cap to gas up. Yes, I am also a fan of these bags but am very careful not to damage the bike's finish. The identical problems can happen with tied down tank bags, again on long trips or in rain. It's safer to use a watertight oversize yellow stuff sack in passenger spot and the panniers and trunk.

I've never really it experienced that but I did once discover a damned paperclip stuck to one of the magnets! It had been there for days and scratched my tank to bits. I didn't love that.

I bought a 2010 with 14,000 on it a couple years ago. It doesn't really have a lot of wow factor. I just found it interesting. It took me 2000 miles to admit that I like it. It is very comfortable. I've done all the service work accept brake fluid and fork oil. On a hot summers day this really puts out some heat on your legs. I wanted a cold weather ride and it's king. 61 mpg is what I average. I use a higher octane than it calls for although it says it not necessary. Use a gentle push closing the side case or you will regret it. I reinforce mine catch points with epoxy and treat the like gold. Finding a replacement could be difficult. My Guzzi is still my favorite ride. Have fun!

@Jodyrides 9 ай бұрын
thanks, fish I really didn’t notice any heat, but I really don’t have any miles on this maybe 300 combined after about four rides, everyone of them had something disturbing, like hesitations, or when it didn’t actually quit running, but it would not go up any hills and I had to park it and come and get it with my trailer Finding the fuel pump clogged, I thought would take care of the issue totally. But there seems to be a hesitation that the Internet claims is bad spark, plug caps. I’ve read that in several places that Honda almost did a worldwide recall on those caps because they are in such a hostile hot environment. Did they get old and cranky and start leaking, and the electricity that should go to the spark plug Shortcuts to the valve cover. Electricity will always take the shortest path to ground.. I know what you mean about moto guzzi’s. I have been riding them, one or the other continuously since 1979 when I got my first, SP 1000. I went from that to a V 50. and then to the most uncomfortable motorcycle in the entire history of the universe, the V 11 sport. I tried everything to make that bike survivable for at least an hour, impossible. I tried Buel Ulysses, lowered foot, pegs, a Corbin seat, which put my balls to sleep within five minutes, I drilled the upper triple clamp and mounted purchase for normal handlebars and I put Honda CB 400 F handlebars in there, I put a fly screen windshield… after two years of trying to civilized that thing, because it had such a wonderful motor, in spite of the fact that the engine had the worst paint job I ever saw.. it looked like it was spray on black Styrofoam. You could scrape it with your finger and it would crumble away like Styrofoam… then I got my 2007 moto guzzi norge 1200.. I actually have three videos on my channel, which were the very first videos I ever made with a helmet camera that my kids bought me for Christmas. It was on one of my favorite roads, moto guzzi norge to East Brady, part one, part two, and part three.. i’m selling my Kawasaki Z 400 at the moment is on Facebook for sale and I plan on replacing it with my fifth moto guzzi.. I have around 190,000 miles combined on my for moto guzzi’s.. They always got me home

Hi Jody Just seen your video. The NT700 is one of the most underrated and competent workhorse touring bikes around,it collected the nickname in the UK as Dullsville(in Europe it's names the Deauville)by some thick headed journo who tested it and didn't know what he was talking about,but it's a gem. My 2010 bike has now has 45k miles on it and runs like it's still new it lives out side under a cover and is ridden mostly as a winder due to the shaft drive and being fully faired is great protection from UK weather,and it still looks new! I regularly ride 40 to 60mile @ 70/75mph on UK motorways,at that speed it's @ 4750 to 5000rpm in top/5th gear.The bike is no slouch in the twisties either and for it's 235kg weight is quite handy due to the low CofG.The bike is also good on fuel too regularly returning 65/67mpg imp and 70mpg if I'm careful with the throttle. You mention the rear wheel gear oil being black when changed,the recommended change interval is,IIRC,every 20,000miles or so with EP90 oil,but I change mine ever 8k miles when I change the engine oil and filter,and it's always black. Thanks for the video and enjoy one of Mr Honda's gems😊

thanks.. those are my impressions of my new to me 2010 Honda NT 700 DEAUVILLE. I don’t know what the name means. But sometimes they get it wrong when talking about other countries. Like the Chevy nova automobile sold here in the late 60s through the 70s. It turns out that nova in Spanish means, won’t run or something like that. And they wondered why the sales were not that good in Spanish or Spanish speaking countries. Or the time the first president George Bush got off an airplane in Argentina, giving the OK sign with both hands to the people at the airport that were there to greet him. He was unaware that that hand gesture is an insult meaning “you are an asshole “in Argentina.. it shore would make things easier if everything was metric also. Which brings me to ask a question… you say your nt700 has 45K miles on it. Which standard of measure is that from your frame of reference? When you say Miles, do you really mean kilometers, or actual, USA miles? 45K Kilometers is 27,900 miles in the United States so, which is it?

We are metric in the uk but use miles for roads and mph for speed. I’m a carpenter/joiner and all measurements are metric but still I can order materials in imperial. Plywood , MDF 8ft x 4ft sheets, 4x2, 3x2 (I think you say it the other way 2x4) 😂 . Great videos 👍

Hi Jody, I gave up worrying about the price of fuel in The UK a long time ago. If somebody sneezes in the southern hemisphere the price goes up here, and never goes back to the pre-sneeze price. My 21 year old Deauville has carbs so is not as efficient as later models, but I'm not planning long distances in the winter so it's not a big issue. I hope we see some more rides through your countryside, I like to see other parts of the world I'm unlikely to get to myself from the perspective of a local. Cheers, Mick

MICK.. have you ever ridden in the Alps? On some of the roads on the mountain pass’s The routes of the Tour de France?? have you been to the isle of man for the races? have you ever ridden on the route of the races?? we get to watch the races here every year, one hour at a time, heavily edited I am surprised that they allow those races to take place, because it seems that every year someone gets killed.. that course does not look overly technical to me, but it does look like it is very high speed, very. I have friends that have been there to watch.. They have told me, “you have to go”.. The most amazing part of that event is, where do all the people stay? Kates cottage? There must be a lot of hotels there that are empty most of the year. ..

I've yet to ride in The Alps Jody, but they're on my list. I've been to plenty of races on purpose built tracks but I've never been to The Isle of Man because I don't feel comfortable watching road racing. There are multiple deaths every year because all the hazards of public roads are there as they ride through at incredible speeds, so the risks are very high and the margin for error is tiny. I'm not saying the TT should be banned, just that I prefer not to be there. The Isle of Man is a big tourist destination even when the TT is not on so there's plenty of good accommodation, and the IoM has it's own tax regime so there are other benefits.

Change the coolant/inhibitor often on these machines (every 5 k miles) with the proper liquid, if not done the coolant link pipe between the cylinder barrels can leak and are a pain to replace, ( full top half engine strip)

I have also heard that the corrosive nature of high silicate type of coolant can a braid the water pump, impeller shaft, and the seal causing them to leak.. I did a video sometime ago on how critical the correct radiator cap is and it’s three functions. I also mentioned the importance of never buying an aftermarket radiator cap for any vehicle. It’s important to always use an OEM radiator cap… I am still in the fog about all the different types of coolant there are available today. Aluminum compatible, Honda, toyota and a couple of the European companies have thier own coolant cocktail and its own individual color. Then I mentioned that there is a certain color that was recommended by one of the big tractor trailer manufacturers, that it was actually, a permanent coolant. Antifreeze used to be called permanent antifreeze as far back as I can remember. Then all of a sudden they recommend changing it periodically… I would think it would be important to change it just to get the corrosion out of the system.. I always thought it would’ve been a good idea to have a cartridge filter much like a car oil filter attachment to the lower hose with a bypass ability it would filter the coolant, and just change the filter periodically.. thanks for the heads up on the hose that has been known to fail on these bikes. When I was investigating NT 700 known problems on the Internet, the only widespread issues I found were spark, plug caps, and water pump issues. I remember a product from a company called redline, they made a water pump lubricant that was almost guaranteed to lubricate your water pump so that it would never fail. But I have not seen that product available for at least 25 years… I don’t believe in additives to gasoline or Oil.. i’m not too sure I would use that redline water pump lubricant, even if I could find it.. Thanks for the heads up

@@Jodyrides the problems I have had to repair were more related to the older 650cc A/B models of the Deauville, they use pressed steel dowel inserts into the base of both barrels, the dowels are connected by a short rubber tube which gives no problems. The dowels are far too thin IMO and can rot out quickly if the coolant is not changed, the heads and barrels must be removed to repair the problem but the parts are cheap though the job is time consuming making the overall job expensive. Another interesting flaw in the older design which covers the 400/500/600/650 and 750cc variants of this engine is the 2 sparkplugs per cylinder which people often ignore thinking the twin only has 2 sparkplugs yet they have 4, these engines will run fine with 2 of the lugs being faulty or disconnected as the hidden plugs are hard to find for most riders.

I hope you find one of these machines with fuel injection. I mentioned in this video, and in one of the other videos of the ride on this machine for the first time, I mentioned that it had a hesitation at times. I thought it might be old gas still in the tank which absorbed water because they put ethanol in the fuel here which absorbs water like brake fluid does because it’s alcohol-based. I thought it might be Myson the air cleaner which is not uncommon. i’ve had signs of mice in three of my previous motorcycles…. My goldwing i bought flea have a video on KZbin, entitled, Goldwing made mouseproof.. it’s under my other screen name, so it’s not on this channel, I also had mice in my Yamaha RZ350 air cleaner housing, and I bought a used Saab 900s that didn’t even make it home when I first brought it home. The air cleaner was packed. I mean pounds of mice debris, and a long snake skin inside the air cleaner housing. Made that car not restart after I stopped for fuel. Had to call for a tow… I ordered a new air filter, we will see you when I pull the fuel tank off to get to the air cleaner and to clean out the gas tank. I don’t know if you saw the video I put on here of the gas I siphoned out of this bike after it left me stranded. I just quit running. It started out with those little hesitations again and then it just finally would not go up the hill. That’s the first time I’ve been stranded in decades. But I have a couple videos showing the fuel that I siphoned out of this gas tank. I don’t know what that is that I got out of this gas tank, but that was clogging the little filter on the bottom of the fuel pump pick up, that was the cause of the hesitation I have been mentioning in a couple of my previous videos, including this one. I’ve never seen so much junk in the fuel and it’s not heavy stuff. It would lay at the bottom. This looks like something light, like a dissolved, old sponge, or bread. There’s a lot of it if you check the video, and there’s still a lot more in the tank at the moment. I’m not going to take the bike apart to pull the fuel filter/fuel pump until my air cleaner and other parts show up, because I’m going to adjust the valves while I have it apart.. I also have a new spark plugs ordered. I had to order them because they are a weird size, and I won’t buy any spark plugs on eBay because of the amount of counterfeit NGK spark plugs on there. you mentioned that you want to go to fuel injection over carburetors. I will say this, carburetors will always get you home. I used to think fuel injection was simple. It is not. Carburetors are as simple as a toilet practically. i’m sure you will find one of these machines. I have learned to be patient when I’m looking for a motorcycle, sometimes maybe a couple years for the right one to turn up with low miles. I wanted to try a Goldwing for the first time. They all either had too many miles are too high of a price. But after about two years of searching, and I found one with only 13,000 miles on it. Still had the original tires on it, but it was 16 years old, and never had anything but oil change is done in all that time. that’s the one I found the mice in the air box.. but I’m sure you’ll find one with low miles and a low price. lotsa luck!

thanks for letting me know how your bike has been for you.. here in Western Pennsylvania, the weather is warming up. Today is Groundhog Day. I was working in the garage yesterday… i’m going to be putting my fuel pump back into The NT 700 gas tank….. But before I put the gas tank on, I want to change the coolant, inspect the water pump, seal, use, silicone, dielectric, grease on the spark, plug caps, because the spark plug caps and the water pump seal I’ve been just about the only little problems. This machine has had according to the Internet… i’ll put a video on KZbin, and while I have the gas tank off I’m going to check the valves.. I put the video on KZbin of each of those little chores.. I also want to change the fork oil, the brake fluid, actually, just about everything I can think of needs serviced probably.. I can see that the front valve cover may need the radiator removed to get the cover off. The gooseneck that the radiator cap is attached to his position right over the valve. Cover and touching the valve cover almost. I’ll let you know in a video..
