How about just change out the relay for the right side fan. Could be that the spring inside the relay is weak causing a large spike or the contact might be pitted, thus blowing the 30 amp fuse. Happy Fathers day Eric, your family seems very nice. You are a lucky man to have such a wonderful life with them. Lots of LOVE there. I am always looking forward in viewing your next video.

As it appears in this situation, replacing or swapping the relay alone would have no effect since the fuse was blown. Replacing the fuse confirmed that the relay was ok. I do agree that testing the relay in the working circuit would be a good step if you had not checked voltage to the different parts of the circuit, but when you found that it worked, you still have to check the voltage.

Very helpful. I am converting a two fan system to that same series/parallel scheme and I would have overlooked an important feature in the fuse layout. When maximum cooling is requested, separate fuses permit one fan to "do its best" even if its partner is dead. It is back to the drawing board for me but I will sleep easier knowing I have at least one HS fan when the system is calling for two HS fans. Many thanks for the extra time you put into the diagrams. The view of the fuse placement "sealed the deal" for me.

Unplugged the harness, and found the grease had dried out and wasn't making a circuit. cleaned all the connectors applied new grease and problem solved! This was about 5 hours later!

You may not have found what is causing the fuse to blow. Sometimes it can be really hard to find the cause of a fuse blowing, especially if it’s an intermittent problem. Since changing a blown fuse seemed to fix the problem you did what I would have done. If it continues to blow fuses it’ll be time to track that problem down. Something tells me your gonna be finding the green shmoo somewhere in the circuit or a bad fan or relay or ground. Great job of tracing down the circuit 👍 Eric. It sucks that the owner sorta made it sound like the same problem came back. I think you did a pretty thorough job. Your troubleshooting videos are my favs. Thanks again

or a relay is breaking internally and shorted to ground on a bump or switch over.. **the middle relay on the diagram could cause that if the contact/spring arm was to twist sideways, it would short out and blow the fuse for "left" fan when left and middle relay turned on for high both high speed. never overlook a relay being bad, best to just replace them, also it could be bent inside or shorted when wrecked, assuming that's what occurred :)

It's not age making us blind, it's experience telling us to take a closer look. ;D People say fuses never blow for no reason, but I beg to differ. Especially on older vehicles where age and entropy have taken their tolls on circuits, adding small resistances at every junction, combined with momentary inrush currents when things turn on, it's perfectly reasonable that under the right conditions, a fuse can get fatigued enough to fail under "normal" operating conditions.
@joshr81765 жыл бұрын
I would gander to say the fuse blew in the accident, they replaced the parts but didn't have money to repair the A/C system, once the A/C system was repaired (leak fixed) the other issues caused by the accident showed their face. Many people repair none critical systems as money allows which leads to discovery of other issues they may have over looked. We see many salvage rebuilt cars that the customer repairs on their own overlooking issues.

So true. IMO most mechanics get into repairs because they are logical and can learn from sight. They figure out how to repair anything they can understand how it works by looking at it. Its a great skill but electrical repairs are hard to visualize. You can't always look at wires and determine how a system works. Most mechanics would pick it up with enough training or better yet enough hands on experience with wiring diagrams.

Typically when the 2 fans shut off and they both take the same amount of time to stop rotating and the suspect fan does not stop too much quicker than the good fan, there is no problem with bearings, dragging internal parts, etc. As you mentioned, due to the accident the fuse may have blown in the past, the body shop fixed the broken wire but did not know how to test a 2-speed fan system so they did not know the fuse was actually blown. That is my story and I am sticking to it. Thanks for the great video and diagnostics for 2-speed cooling fans. (Hiding in there somewhere is a bare wire waiting to short out hehehehe) Would like to have seen you manually bypass certain relays to operate each fan independent based on your different speeds on your wire diagrams just to prove out the theory but that is extra free work for your viewers hehe.

That's some neat engineering with the relays there. I remember when I was at MMI, they had these boards that you could play with, and install relays in all kinds of different configurations to make certain lights turn on, and others turn off, and some half bright - same concept here. I've forgotten half of what I've learned there over the past 2 decades. 😒 Don't get old! 😂 Sounds like you got the same gremlin infestation I had at the beginning of the year! They got my compressor, the differential in the Silverado, my 30 year old TV, and one of my cats (vet bills totaling 4-figures, all for worms 😖 ). Luckily a swift whack to the TV knocked the stupid out of it, and it's been working great! No parts needed, no dollars spent. 👍 A few other things broke, but I must've blocked all that out. 🤣 Been a non-stop money-hemorrhage-fest over here ... Those Starbucks Frappuccinos used to be my favorite. Drank those for years, until the company did something stupid (politically) and I stopped buying them. That happened with my favorite ice cream many years ago, too. Wish I could build a time machine, and go back to a normal time where companies just made products, and actors just acted, and musicians just made music, and everyone kept their ideologies to themselves. Ahh but I digress! There I go dreaming again ... 😞 Got 3 vids shot, and zero time to edit. I need to borrow some of your energy, brother - I don't know how you do it! Anyway, keep on keepin' on ... and I'll keep tryin' ... 😁

1. Current draw is average 2. Fan turn on spikes are minimal My answer: The blown fuse got fatigued through normal fan turn on and turn off cycles. Under normal conditions, each time the power to the fan is turned on, the _fuse wire expands and contracts_ causing wear to the fuse wire. Since the fans have high turn on/off cycles, if the fuse isn't manufactured properly, it'll blow eventually. It's like bending a piece of metal back and forth until it breaks.
@johnaclark15 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting theory. I mentioned in the comments already that I had this exact same failure on my 08 Odyssey at 149K. Found the same amp draw on the fan as Eric did. Replaced the fuse and that was 3 years and 60K miles ago with no further issues. I did notice that Honda changed from a standard 30A mini fuse in the gen 3 (2005-2010) to that larger style J Case fuse in the gen 4 (2011-2017.) I wonder if they thought that would alleviate this very problem.
@15743_Hertz5 жыл бұрын
@@johnaclark1 Unless the fan has a few shorted windings which don't affect the overall performance but would cause a slightly larger spike with a tad more current draw. Regardless of that, the fuse is being stressed by the circuit turning on and off several times per minute. To me, this would indicate that it would fail due to stress faster than say, a fuse in a circuit that's turned on for the duration of the vehicle's trip.
@dans_Learning_Curve5 жыл бұрын

I'm an industrial electrician and your troubleshooting techniques are virtually identical to mine, except I'm working with everything from 24vdc to 480vac 3-phase, frequently a mixture of 24vdc, 120vac and 480vac. And the computers that run everything are called PLCs, (programmable logic controllers). I use much of the same kind of equipment also, except I can actually SEE the logic in the controller and, for instance, find the conditions required for the fans to run fast or slow, essentially WHY the outputs are getting turned on. And I can easily change the logic if necessary. Very cool to watch you step through the wiring and clearly explain it to the laymen. As to why the fuse blew, I'm curious what the current draw would be if you locked the fan rotor. It could have happened in the winter if her engine compartment was packed with snow, and now that we're getting warmer weather, she notices something is wrong. Just a thought, because I'm close to Syracuse and we get snow off Lake Ontario, whereas you get it from Lake Erie just as bad.

That was a really good explanation of the cooling fan operation, Eric. Thanks!

I would bet that the body shop mist it Amp draw is good not much more to say. New tire machine and lift....it is what it is. I replaced one of my lifts a few years ago. My tire machine is as old as the hills leaks air but still working. I think you did a great job laying out current path. Great video.

My guess is, customer never noticed it until warm weather time. Likely the fuse was blown months ago.

This prompted me to finally use the disciplined approach to go through wiring diagram for the cooling fan relays for a 2007 Miata. Three relays, single fan. Turns out one fixed ground, one relay switching to ground, two relays to power. Must be two windings in the motor. One power/fixed ground for low. One power/two grounds for med. Two powers/two grounds for high. Now I just have to figure out how to reach the fan connector. You can barely get a visual on the fan.

Eric O great video. Learned a lot. Thanks for walking us through the wiring schematic and explaining how the system works and showing us the amp measurement. seeing as how I have an odyssey this was extremely good info to store in the old noggin. Now if I don't lose the noggin I'll know what to look for. I bought the launch for around 400$ +. seems well equipped for use on Hondas. Thanks again for your time and knowledge. ❤️️
