In this video I have a look at a customer's 2018 Chrysler Pacifica with a light coming on that says, "Start Stop Unavailable Service Start Stop System." After reading the codes as well as reading service data, performing a few tests we make the call on the batteries. Well, that should be easy right?
-Enjoy!

I was thinking that too. technically my parents own a jeep grand cherokee with the pentastar, and I'm not sure how similar it is under the hood. but for the most part I had to keep watching because this just kinda seems like a stupidly engineered vehicle. there has to be 50 pounds of totally unnecessary plastic just in the engine bay.

I did my first aux battery replacement job a few months ago. I couldn't believe that battery cost almost as much as a series 24F or 35. Start-stop feature is like most of the features in new cars. It isn't something you want, asked for, or can decline, but you paid for it and now it will cost you more to maintain it.
@robc8468

My friend tells me stories about his Mercedes that has 110 modules and uses Ethernet in place of CAN bus between some of the modules. Pretty soon you'll need to run Wireshark to troubleshoot embedded protocols between modules. I pretty much threw my hands up when some LED taillight bulbs became CAN addressable! 🙄 I'm with you Eric! Former Dodge Tech here, I’m a Toyota Tech now. When I saw the title of the video it caught my eye and thought ooo this is interesting. Every time a customer came in with this concern, 85% of the time it was a bad auxiliary battery. It would throw dozens of battery codes. Replace that small battery and you’re good to go 👍🏼 sometimes it would be annoying to replace them like on the Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators the aux battery would be on the passenger side, remove tire and the wheel liner and it’s right there in a small box with three bolts. On some newer Grand Cherokees it would be underneath the passenger seat and the main battery underneath the driver seat. Fun times. Great video really enjoyed it 👍🏼

I have never seen a 2 battery system on a gasser. This was very informative and I watched very intently. NOT a simple battery change out. although was wondering if you could've removed positive stud on small bat to make the connection without dinking with loosening the fuse pack. I also do not understand Stellantis and their gateways. I do like your attention to detail and corrosion prevention. I learn a lot from these vids, and I thank you profusely. I have changed batteries where it pays to know that you should keep power to the system when replacing bat to avoid the resets, like on our Caddy with bat under rear seat. Weird stuff happens if you don't. Lastly, we do not have trust issues. Shout out to Mrs O, she classes up the joint.

95% of the time, the auxiliary battery will cause the stop/start to throw this message. I also own a 2018 Pacifica. Those are definitely the original factory installed batteries. You can tell because they have gray Mopar labels. Replacement Mopar batteries have a white label. Six years out of the factory batteries in these vans is very impressive. They usually fail within three years or less. Some owners have had both batteries replaced twice while still under warranty. No reset is needed on these vans when replacing the batteries, but I advise folks to leave both batteries disconnected at the same time for a couple minutes so the orange @ light goes away immediately. It will eventually go away on it's own after a few drive cycles if you don't. I know you would never advise anyone to do so, but if someone has a dead aux battery, wants to save a few bucks, doesn't like/use stop/start, and can live with the orange @ light, you can safely leave the aux battery's negative cable disconnected. Stop/start is permanently disabled, but everything else still works as intended (including remote start). Our van has been this way for almost 4 years. 🙂 You can electrically separate these batteries by removing one of the negative cables. I've found it easiest to remove the aux negative cable. I was happy that you acknowledged the need to separate the batteries and test them separately. Many folks don't which deems the test worthless. Eric, I do have one question. I have AllData and was wondering if the explanations from the manufacturer's service info is identical to what you find in AllData or is the manufacturer's service info usually more detailed?

Aside from loving watching you work,;-)…I was so happy to see you clean and LUBE the actually battery terminals, contact side! I want to jump thought the screen sometimes watching guys do dry fits and then spray lube ON the outside of the terminals and contacts. Beauty man.. again, Love your ethic and problem solving. A cut above.

Oh, the struggles. Nice to see someone else have issues. I am not alone. Parking brakes were seldom used because the cable would rust and lock on.

Who the heck fixes a stop start system? The first thing I did with my Buick was buy the module to disable it. One of the worst ideas ever implemented to meet emissions standards.

The smaller the battery, the more it seems to cost. My daughter has a Ford hybrid with a small 12V battery, and it also costs more than the large batteries.

I learned the hard way on some of the small Jeeps with dual batteries that they should always be replaced in pairs. They'll set maddening codes if one battery is left connected while swapping the other. And one can drain the other if it's weak. What a goofy setup, but we'd expect no less from Chrysler.

For work I’m often tasked to write user manuals… I like to think I do a pretty good job, but almost never get feedback unless I’m wrong about something or someone runs into a corner case I never knew could happen. So, I know you made someone’s day by complimenting the service data. I guarantee that took a LOT of care and attention to write.

My dad works at Napa, one of the thousands of them. I stopped buying batteries from him completely. I was having to replace one every few months. After four different batteries, I now go somewhere else. I've also replaced an alternator twice in a Dodge Caliber. I'm close to not going to Napa for parts anymore.

The Start/Stop feature has to be the dumbest thing to come out of the auto industry in a long time. Not only does it put extra wear and tear on the starter but it can be a safety issue too. On several occasions , while at a full stop at a merge, I waited for my opening and just as I hit the accelerator , the car decided to shut off then restart. This caused a hesitation and almost an accident. The first thing I did after that was to find out how to shut this stupid thing off.
