I had one of these as my first car! It was a 2005 Odyssey. My parents drove it from new for 11 years and 140k miles. It had THOUSANDS of miles pulling a small box trailer hauling wood back and forth for renovations and firewood over the years. Lots of city driving as well. I drove it for another 2 years before getting a ford Fiesta. It is incredible it made it to 156k miles with no transmission cooler considering the stress it endured.

Whats the routing recommendation?? Fluid enters the radiator cooler first then to the external cooler or what? How do you identify the correct hoses to tap into?
@somethingforeveryone4206 Жыл бұрын
Pro tip. Add spacers to the back of the cooker to reduce the burden on the AC condenser. This will also allow the cooler to perform better as well.

Another way too keep it from messing up is changing transmission fluid and filter regularly as in the manual

Yes that’s true but the point of this video is to keep the transmission from overheating in the first place.

We have a 2006 Ody with 210K Miles. She's been a great vehicle 👍Installed a Trans cooler back in the day. When the kids were young, we would tow a small camper and our water crafts during Arizona desert heat. Trust me, oil coolers are a life saver for your car's transmission!

Many years ago I set up a mid 90s Caprice (5L) to heavy tow. 3 row radiator, and one of these. Towed a 30 foot tandem axel travel trailer all over the country for years. Sold the car many years later with 199,000 miles. Only thing was it smoked a little. People thought I was crazy. All about heat management.

My 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan AWD has a massive trans cooler in front of the condenser stock. I am gonna install an aftermarket oil cooler with a factory oil cooler hook up tho, and a pusher fan in front that I can control for off-roading, for conditions where there is minimal air flow and high stress like hill climbing

Dang wish you showed how to splice in the lines & that’s what I mainly came here to see was to how to actually hook one up not just mount it. But thanks anyways will use this mounting tip if I do go this rout

Honda also offers retrofit supplemental transmission cooler kits, very easy to install and priced well.

How do you find those?

So if the odyssey cam with a tow package, it should also have the transmission cooler?
@koreyhannan9071 Жыл бұрын
It may have an additional transmission cooler. That's what my Toyota Highlander has. The aftermarket ones like this are still way better

Changing the trany fluid once a year helps a lot too in any mini van. The poor little transmissions work very hard.

Thanks. Never thought about putting a transmission oil cooler on a Odyssey.

awww nice dog but do you have a 1964 Peel Trident?

Are you running it in series with the factory cooler? If so before or after? I would think before, because transmission fluid that is too cold will destroy your transmission almost as quickly as fluid that is too hot
@averyalexander23034 жыл бұрын
Install the aftermarket cooler after the factory cooler, there's a reason all the OEMs do it this way and all the cooler manufacturers recommend installing it that way. The myth that the cooler in the radiator will heat the fluid up in cold weather is just that- a myth. Every transmission cooler I have ever seen is in the cold side of the radiator, which does not warm up significantly in cold weather and won't warm up at all until the thermostat opens, which could take quite a while on a cold day with the heater on. Don't believe me? Feel the lower rad hose after driving around for a while on a cold day, it will be cold or barely warm. Also, your statement that cold fluid will destroy the trans nearly as quickly as overheated fluid is completely wrong unless we are are talking about extreme cold, say below 0 degrees F. If that was the case there would be a lot more dead transmissions in cold climates. A lot of vehicles, especially trucks, have large external coolers with no thermostat and the transmissions function without issue and last 200K+ miles with proper maintenance even in very cold climates.

I use a translator. Honda Pilot 2017 For a 9 speed transmission, is it worth installing additional cooling? Or is it unnecessary? I want to tow a motorhome, don't know which one yet
@averyalexander23034 жыл бұрын
Great tips! Another tip is to mount the cooler as far towards the hot side of the radiator and condenser as possible while still getting good airflow to minimize its effect on their performance. The effect won't be dramatic, but why not.

How is your transmission now, still working properly when towing? ? No whinning noise and limp mode as a result of high temperature ? ?
@matthewshambler26444 жыл бұрын
Extra cooling for gearbox, engine, diff etc. on vehicles that tow or operate under extra stress is always a good idea and money well spent in my opinion..
@somethingforeveryone4206 Жыл бұрын
Might as well add a second fan on the left side and and oil cooler behind it while you're there.
@desi4lyfe3792 жыл бұрын
Will it decrease the condenser efficiency by any means? It will literally take roughly 1/4 of total surface area from the ac condenser.
@MrShezi22432 жыл бұрын
Don't you thin that the gap between the condenser and rdiator is too much and would affect air flow through the condenser when the car is stationary?
@2stroketurbo2 жыл бұрын
Seems to work just fine , going strong many years later
@maleco26144 жыл бұрын
does doing this change the measurement reading on the dipstick? in other words would you have to put more fluid in to compensate? If so how much?
@AlwaysBeSmart6743 жыл бұрын
I’m sure it does very but very minor. Just fill the dip stick all the way right before full and should be fine.

This video is absolutely worthless. What you need to know is to install the cooler in series with the factory cooler (radiator). You want to make sure to install the cooler in series with the return line. This way the fluid travels through the factory cooler first, then is cooled down greatly before returning back into the transmission. Knowing which is the return line is very important. The cooler will still work either way but it's cooling capacity will be much less than if you use the return line. Would have been very helpful to show this.
