2016-2020 Honda Pilot | How to install OEM transmission cooler kit | Better cooling + more towing!

This video is a complete step by step how to on installing the OEM Honda transmission cooler kit on your 2016-2020 Honda Pilot with 6 speed transmissions. This will up your Honda Pilots towing capacity from 3500lbs to 5000lbs! This kit can easily be installed at your house to save you money from the dealer, but there are a few challenges. This kit will also help the 6spd tranny not burn the fluid as much .longevity wise even if not towing .specially with these 6spd tranny issues I have a 2020 with 33k and I had to do a 3x drain and fill and the tranny is eating up this fluid so I have to do drain and fill every 15k .my friend did this on his tgat had tranny issues also eating fluid and he installed this kit not towing and it solved the burning of the fluid.ill be getting this kit next week thanks for the install easy enough

Should be done from the factory. No reason this should be an add on item. It's nice to have even if you don't tow.

Yes, it is such a simple little part that should just be included. Its just a way for Honda to make money to charge a lot more for a Pilot with the 'tow package'

I use a translator. Can you tell me if the 9-speed transmission is also useful for installing this device? Or is it unnecessary? I want to tow a motorhome, don't know which one yet

Just make sure it's a good brand. I know the factory one is expensive but it's Honda certified

Thanks very informative video! The trans cooler looks tiny compared with other after market coolers. Have you monitored your trans fluid temps since installing and noticed much of a diffrence?

Honestly since we don't pull anything that's near the pilots limit I have not monitored the temps. There are bigger ones out there but I wanted to go with OEM

Do you think FWD Pilots can tow 4,000 lb with an oil cooler added? I would be towing on level ground and I haven't found any info about raising the tow capacity on the FWD cars. Thanks!

It seems that they cap the FWD capacity at 3,500lbs. Even though it would be just barely over that, it would see that Honda does not suggest doing it. You should use your judgement and listen to the manufacturer.

Thanks for the video, im considering adding a second cooler but from the video dont know which line is the send vs return line? Do you know is the line going into the filter the return? Also does these line run to the radiator or directly into the transmission? Thanks so much

It does not run to the radiator. It runs to the transmission cooler. If you were adding a second cooler, it should not matter where in line you put it

Would this video also apply to my 2023 Passport with the 9 speed? Or, is the newer transmission vastly different? I have the tow package with the ATF cooler 9 speed on the way.

The nine speed is setup differently. I would imagine that watching the video will help you understand how to install it, but the hoses and mounting locations will be different. If I had access to a 9 speed Pilot I would do a video

Thanks for making the video. Have you towed anything between 4000-5000 pounds after having ATF cooler installed? I got mine installed and towed 3200-3500 pounds. Once, I got a "Transmission is too hot" message when I was hauling at 70-75 mph and the outside temperature was 120 degrees. Not sure if that added to the factor that caused the ATF cooler failed to work efficiently. I had to pull over and let the ATF cool down then continue. My Pilot has under 25K miles. Thanks!

We do not tow anything that is close to 4000-5000 pounds, and we have never got the transmission is too hot message before or after the install. My guess would be the outside temperature. 120 degrees is way hotter than normal. Were you driving in a desert?

That is real hot. In those ambient temps I'm not sure anything would help the temps towing that kind of weight

The manual says don't tow anything going over 60mph, or 55mph if it's a rigid trailer (like an RV) I'm pretty sure. Maybe that contributed. Being in the dessert was probably a pretty big factor thought!

I had the same issues with my Pilot but it was 85 to 88 degree outside and I was pulling a 17 foot RV trailler that weight 3500 empty I when full, I am close to 5000 pounds. Today I had my infrared thermometer and check the temp of the radiator and only show 110 F but on the torque Pro app my tranny temp is around 194 & 212. So it look like my radiator wasn't properly hook up. Do you have any idea why the temp is so low?

Yes it works as soon as you have it all installed. I would make sure to check the transmission fluid afterwards

Great video. But I couldn't get to the top hose that goes to the pipe that originally came from the filter from under the car. I had to remove the battery, air intake, and bottom of battery case which had 4 nuts, 2 underneath that was a pain. Once all that was out of the way I was able to remove the top hose to the transmission and install the new one from the kit (longer hose). FYI for those having issues.

Can you tell me what size hose are used i am planning to buy just the cooler assembly to mount and then add hoses from local auto store. Also do you think the hoses attached to the fin unit will come off. So i can attach the hose from there straight to the transmission.

I do believe it will fit the 2wd but it is only recommended for the AWD. Honda does not recommend towing heavy things with a 2wd so they say this won't fit. I would do some research before you do anything

Other than the transfer case I can't see any. Or any reason to not use a 2wd. If I find anything I'll pass it on thanks again.

It would be a different part, but the basics are all the same. Bolt the cooler in the front and hook up lines to the transmission

It only lists it for AWD vehicles, I am not sure if the FWD versions have the same connections. The dealer might be able to answer the question

My man... the problem with the rust is not a Honda problem. It's your location in the rust belt. If you make one of these again, don't make yourself sound ignorant by wasting so much time complaining about manufacturer problems that are actually the fault of your municipality and state using salt to de-ice your roads. 🤦‍♂️ My 2019 Honda Pilot with 121,000 miles doesn't have this problem. Why? Because I don't live in the rust belt. 👌

The 9 speed is a different part. I believe you could follow the video for the most part but it will be slightly different because of the different transmission
