Honda problems just got worse - Major recall coming?

The NHSTA is expanding the Honda probe to now include the 2023 Honda Passport.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Monday it is expanding and upgrading a probe into about 295,125 American Honda vehicles over reports of crashes and injuries due to their automatic emergency braking systems.
According to the reports, the automatic emergency braking system in these vehicles was triggering inadvertently, which increases the risk of a collision due to the rapid deceleration.
The problem affects the 2019-2022 models of the Honda Insight, a hybrid electric car, and the Honda Passport SUV, according to the U.S. auto safety regulator.
The regulator said it is upgrading the probe from March to an engineering analysis, and expanding it to include 2023 Honda Passport vehicles.
Engineering analysis is a required step before the NHTSA could demand a recall.
The NHTSA said Honda provided an analysis of the alleged defect and stated that some customers may have possibly had an inadequate understanding of the braking system and its limitations.
The agency's report states that the Office of Defects Investigation received 106 complaints, which included reports of three crashes and two injuries.
Honda did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The thing about Honda, at least here in Canada where we don’t have the same protections afforded in the U.S., is that Honda and their dealers are absolute slimy liars. Toyota not quite so bad YMMV

Might want to consider trading in your Honda 3.5 L vehicles of any kind for a much more reliable Toyota hybrid, sedan or SUV slightly used in great condition or new❤

My 2017 CRV did this two times with me. I took it to the dealer and asked them to look at it. I traded it for a 2020, and haven’t had any issues with this one

About 2 months ago, my 24 Civic did a false vehicle collision alert with hard braking at highway speed with the cruise control on.There was nothing in front of me, and fortunately, no one behind me. The car reduced speed pretty drastically, but accelerated again when I put my foot back into the throttle. It scared the crap out of me to say the least! I did some reading up on some Honda forums and found several complaints about this, but no reports of accidents. I adjusted the auto braking settings from Medium Distance to Long. According to the manual the “Long” setting only gives an alert signal without auto braking. So far, this has been a one time incident, but regardless, Honda needs to get ahead of this apparent safety issue!

I did the same thing when mine would brake for low highway signs, identifying them as trucks No issue after setting the distance to long

I haven’t ever checked to see what my settings are on my CX 50, but it must be set like that because sometimes I get the warning, but it doesn’t make the car brake all of a sudden

I’ve had this happen several times when on a right curve on a two lane road where I guess it thinks the oncoming car, in its own lane, is in front of me and brakes hard. If someone had been following me closely they would have hit me in the rear by the time I reacted and accelerated. I now keep my foot by the accelerator so I can respond quicker. It’s quite annoying.

My 2018, Honda Accord has done this to me two or three times while going about 45 50 mph. It’s pretty scary they need to include the accord in that recall.

Everyone has recalls, but many far worse and more frequent. Overall far better than most others. All my Honda and Acura products has been reliable despite recalls as recalls issues was never experienced. Only problem was 2020 2.0T Accord steering issue and 2023 intega same issue, but once fixed, no other issues. And my rdx back windshield smashing which Avura Canada replaced.

Hun… keep the radar in the front grill and sensors and camera in the front windscreen clean and clear and there will be no problems. Especially when you drive into direct sun light and the sun is low in the sky … it’s blinding the camera … this is not a Honda problem. It’s a ADAS problem - the grubberment keeps shoving down car manufacturers necks just to get 5 stars crash ratings.

My 2021 crv special edition has always done this in city roads never on freeway. I notice it does this sometimes when I’m about to pass shadows on the road. It thinks the shadows on the road are cars. I drive usually using cruise control on

Can you turn off forward breaking and still use cruise control? I didn't know that was possible. BTW phantom breaking also happens when NOT using cruise control. Just like phantom lane departures on a hilltop.

Rented a 2022 Nissan Rogue a few years ago. Had this same issue occur twice on a 700mi trip, while driving on the highway. I had my co pilot google how to turn off this feature and we disabled it for the rest of the trip. I can see how dangerous this “feature” can be when it malfunctions.

Is this not an inherent problem of the system? What happens when debris lands in front of the camera? Can the camera identify a partial leaf or bug from an object in the road? And will it always identify the difference? Wouldn't a chip in the lens also cause problems? Maybe I'm missing something here. I don't have this system and am not sure how it works. If someone has the knowledge, please respond. I'm sure others would like to know.

I have a SUbaru with that feature, and I ALWAYS turn it off, as there have been instances in all makes in terms of this feature. I"M driving the car....I don't need dangerous junk.....same goes for lane detection etc. I would assume this feature can be shut off in Honda as well....if not, then that's a real problem.

My 2023 CRV definitely has this problem. Many phantom "slow downs" and some crash warnings where nothing can be seen. It is worse if there is a little rain, but that means I can't use cruise control AT ALL in a light rain because of course there is no way to disable this feature. There is no manual cruise control.

@judirollings3959 in Safety Support on steering wheel where the home on left is showing..go in and turn off...but you have to shut it off every time you start the car apparently just like the idle stop button near stick shift.

Honda Trully; " Lost their Way" by 2015 ALL their products from that point forward are Messed. Increasingly so year over year. Honda dealers are reporting ever reducing Sales numbers. Customers are No Longer lining up to buy Honda.. Period. Fanboy /Marketing bullshit aside. I've bought 4 New Hondas, starting with my 1987 Acura. My last Acura was a 2004 model . EV push?😂 Please tell the World who has required U to purchase an EV. Everyone is waiting to hear your response. Tesla sold 1.808 million EVs at a profit in 2023. Tesla sold 1.789 million EVs at a profit in 2024. That's far more than twice as many EVs as Ford sold in gasoline F150s. The Tesla Model Y was the highest selling vehicle in the World. No citizens were ever forced to purchase an EV. EVs aren't going away any more than the billions of smartphones, tablet and desktop computers on Earth are going away. To think otherwise is uneducated and naive.
