Cars are not keys on a piano. Driving is neither a mathematical formula nor a problem to be solved. It is a reality to be experienced. If manufacturers were to perfect such an ideal formula, then choices will cease to exist.

I would think most folks watching this are automotive enthusiasts. Such people ought to purchase as many high reving, high octane needing, preferably manual cars as soon as possible. Soon they will be as extinct as the animal body plans that are the source of energy for such fun vehicles. At least that’s what I’ve been doing.

I consider this a lot. That a car needs to be about the experience now. I drive 2017 Stage 2 S3. A bunch done, but the $100 motor mount insert was one of my fav mods. It added vibes back into the car, which felt inert. Now I can feel the turbo spool, among many other communications from the front. Nothing OTT. I have no idea how an EV would do this for me. I cannot imagine myself tinkering with the formula, which could get wildly complicated, account for all variables, and then there's nothing to do.

Im with you in your logic and thought process… I really am. BUT this style of thinking is through the lens of a car/driving enthusiast. For example, I would have a hard time getting a number of people excited about the “experience of” learning history, shopping, going to a gun range, running a marathon and/or day trading stocks because people have varied opinions on these types of tasks. For many of us in the comments and watching this video, spending a few hours on a backroad alone listening to throttle blips of high revving engines is the stuff dreams are made of. But for most of the driving public, driving is a part of their routine of getting through life… no different than washing clothes, flying, cooking, or cleaning. Almost akin to a chore that HAS to be done versus an activity they WANT to do. For some of those people, no amount of engineering or planning will change the fact they only view driving as a means to get to and from where they need/want to be versus a fun activity.

Agreed. Honda still has time to develop their own EVs…with today’s tech, they’ll be able to make up lost ground quickly from 1st gen to 2nd gen. ICE’s and hybrids are still more popular than EVs, too, so they’re not missing out. In addition, all you need is decent performance and a killer body and you’ll sell (look no further than the Lotus Emira and Eletre).

As a long time Honda fan, I do have mixed feelings about the GM partnership. However, I have to respect that they knew they couldn't get it going from the ground up and make it a legitimate competitor. Furthermore, it's not just a Blazer with a Honda or Acura badge. It has its own style and driving characteristics. I think GM is onto something really good with this Ultium architecture, but I am interested to see what EVs Honda comes out with in the future.

Exactly, I see nothing wrong here. Blame needs to go to the forced EV push. It should be an option, not a forced-buy. TBH, hybrid is much more long-lasting and sorted out. The batteries are small enough to not kill the car with enormous weight penalty, and can be REASONABLY replaced in the future. PHEV is as far as I would go if I have to choose.

@@BigEightiesNewWaveRight there's no rush for these absurdly expensive 1st gen cars. If only hybrids were given enough attention and more of them were made besides just Toyota/Volvo basically. Until solid-state battery packs happen (which isn't as far off as ppl thought) EVs will be heavy with an offset power to weight- with expensive components to compensate. Mark did really well in this video. His first question to one of the design leads about the issue Honda has regarding the trajectory of EVs as a complete piece of technology exposed Honda's lack of capability to do this alone. When people complain about modern cars, this is the source of the feeling of mediocrity, lack of passion and risk, and so on. Cars are becoming comprehensive tech devices that require tec and economies only China and the US possess. European cars suffer the same problem as Japanese cars. Getting a reliable car with balanced tech like the early to mid 2000's is gone. People will be driving cars that are like phones which track everything you do, have to be plugged in constantly, require constant software updates and specific infrastructure--they will be more like a laptop phone. Information will be shared with cloud technologies across multiple platforms and there will be subscription based services and lack of user/owner serviceability of the product because we will incessantly 'own' less of the car we drive.

The suspension setup? The tuning of the computers on how to manage battery/motor use? Switchgear? Infotainment? Seating? Interior packaging? All of which seem to still have the possibility to speak Honda/Acura for their fanboys. I get that you may hate GM products, but if the hate is not directed at the battery/motor packs specifically, and everything else can be made to Honda/Acura specs, WTF is everyone bitching about? I'm with you honestly. I have an early Gen 2 Prius that's 20 years old w/ 340k miles on it, never done anything to it other than oil changes, still has the original brake pads even. I have a friend with a Tesla Model S (I think a 2015?) with over 235k miles on it and it's fine. Most people, whether it be ICE or EV, only keep their cars for as long as the warranty lasts if that.... So I don't see where the disposable argument comes from with EV's, because they certainly will last longer than most people will own them. I'd rather risk dealing with a battery than dealing with Direct Injection, CVT's, PHEV systems, High Pressure fuel systems, cylinder de-activation, oil dilution, carbon buildup on modern low friction rings, emissions systems, etc.

This strategy worked well for Honda when Honda wanted to get into the SUV market by partnering with Isuzu aka GM. No one really cared about the Isuzu built Hondas. But it gave Honda time to figure out how to navigate the EV landscape. Will it work? Maybe. Landscape is different now tho. Brands like Tesla are moving fast on the innovation end and are selling like hotcakes. Japanese management need to think fast or be left in the dust by the new comers. This isnt the first time honda and GM have collaborated together (Acura SLX, 1st gen Honda Passport being Isuzus or the Vue Redline having a J30 V6) Unlike many other EVs or even GM's own new plan to ditch carplay/android auto, these have traditional interiors which is what people want/need out of a "generic" car but it doesn't matter anyways, the corporate/government push for EV is less so rooted in "saving the earth" and more for taking away your mobility and making you poorer too in the process. Notice how nobody really says how the batteries are mined/source, or plans to power a failing power grid to supplant an influx of EVs. We'd all be doing better if we encouraged more public transportation and better housing options but that would be too easy.

My First car was an accord LXi hatchback. A wonderful car. The last new car I bought was a 2017 Bolt. Paid around $32k new. Fun to drive, thrilling acceleration, and other than brakes and wipers, has not required one dollar towards maintenance and upkeep. (If you guys haven’t driven an early bolt, before they malibuized the suspension, I’d suggest you give it a try. For what it is, it’s very good) When given the resources, GM can design and build great cars. My concern about the ZDX is that will carry along SUV architectural inefficiencies (less range, larger batteries, and longer charge times) which contribute nothing toward making a fun touring car solely in order to not be a station wagon. It would be great to see gm or Honda use ultium to go into the taycan’s space in the 60-90k price range.

Honda is way behind in EV world right now, I don't think they will be able to catch up with big players later on unless new type of battery suddenly came out and destroys current lithum-ion battery market.. because the Battery management tech gap between Tesla and even Hyundai and VW vs other companies are huge and getting bigger every year..

So this, in essence, is the electric version of the brz and 86? in that it's share architecture and only real changes are the suspension setup? From what I can guess there's only going to be a 10k difference is pricing between the 4 EV's (Blazer, Prologue will be "low tier" while Lyriq and ZDX are the "Premium tier") right? In reality there's not much to keep a person from grabbing the cheap Chevy or Cadillac right now and bypass the Honda/Acura version which is sad because I was really hoping for more of a difference other than suspension tweaks to hold off buying the Lyriq for the ZDX. As exciting as the Ioniq is, I'm bypassing it based on how backlog'd Kia, Hyundai and Genesis are in the service department. I know it's an EV and doesn't require a ton of maintenance but when it does, I would like to be able to get it serviced hopefully quickly. So that leaves Ford & Tesla as alternative options.

I briefly worked in mazda sales, and the number of people who choose between walking and chewing gum who would ask me “do you have any of them electric cars?” Outnumbered enthusiasts drastically, and eroded my will to live. They’re the target demo for this product and I think it’ll work for them. Because those … people have money/HELOCs for new EV now and again 5 years later.

It’s weird that GM were the first to the EV market but then gradually go up and down with how they implement EVs. That being said the ultium platform is pretty great. The lyriq and the hummer EV are pretty good but they are still small scale numbers. What remains to be seen is how they do at scale. The Silverado EV and the Equinox ev will be the true test of how well this does. I don’t like how people crap on GM. They have some of the best engineers in the industry hands down. And even in terms of reliability the fetishisation of Japanese brands need to stop. GM especially Cadillac has gotten wayyy better with reliability compared to their dark days in the late 2000s and have definitely improved a lot and have very nice interiors. Meanwhile, Honda, Nissan, Kia and Hyundai though looking nice on the outside have declined in bit in quality. Toyota is the one lay one that has stayed consistent.

Honda has plenty of electric/electrified models outside of the US, the e:N which is being made with Dongfeng, the hybridized HR-V known as the ZR-V, the hybridized civic, eventually most of these should be available in the US market, but for full EVs the American market would likely prefer a GM based car 7:26 and not a Dongfeng

To everyone afraid that the move to electric means boring cookie cutter cars just look around you the next time you’re out driving. We’ve been doing boring cookie cutter cars the last 40 years. The reason all new EVs are the same battery in a family hauler box is because that’s what people are buying as ICE vehicles right now. If you think the current Acura ICE SUVs are some amazing driving experience you need to get out more.
