Before we used to sh*t on the Ridgeline on how it was a girly pickup. Now, its probably the most sane and safe choice out of all the pickups, it still has a decent V6 while most pickups today are now using turbo 4's while at the 60k price range.
@LancelotLink13 ай бұрын
The Ridgeline hauls 4X8 sheets of plywood and drywall flat in its composite bed and they dont move around. The Frontier, Tacoma and Ranger have wheel wells that prevent me from hauling them flat in the bed. The Ridgeline also has a deep large trunk for my tools and the other 3 I have to put my tools in the cab. The Ridgeline has a naturally aspirated V6 and the Tacoma and Ranger have turbo 4 bangers. The cab in the Ridgeline is wider and more comfortable and the entire ride and stability especially with the high tech all well drive is incredible. If you're doing city driving and haul tools and 4x8 sheets the Ridgeline is hands down the best small truck IMO.

My only complaint about the Trailsport model is that they didn’t give it a lift. I just bought a 2024 Trailsport, and the first thing I did was add a 2-inch lift in the front and a 1.5-inch lift in the back. Now it sits at the standard height of most midsize trucks. Besides that, I love this truck-it’s everything I need. I do wish the back seat was bigger (yes, I know it has the most room out of any midsize truck on the market), but I can’t complain. I’d have to step up to a full-size truck for more room, but they’re asking crazy money for those today. Anyway, like I said, the Trailsport model really needed a lift. I mean, they put one on the pilot Trailsport, so why not the Ridgeline? I think it might be a gas mileage issue.

the tailgate is still the best feature and class exclusive in midsize. full size american trucks finally started doing their own versions. while still a roomy, comfortable crossover pick up, the basic design has not changed since 2006. it needs a flat load floor in the back seat and a bed redesign at the expense of losing the trunk, which is not that useful anyway when loaded. i say put the spare outside underneath like a normal truck so the bed floor can be lowered. it might not have room for the trunk space after this but what you gain in bed volume is worth more bc it is pretty shallow now.. give it some power outlets in the bed too. no doubt the next gen will get the new powertrain and keep a v6 which is not a bad thing while all the rest go 4cylinder turbo, except frontier. the trailsport should get some upgrades as well as bigger tires and a lift. roof rails would be cool since no other truck has them.
@SeanChandler3 ай бұрын
I think the trunk is very useful for the vast majority of truck owners who hardly ever use their bed as intended or for work. It’s also a great place to store tools. Totally agree that some outlets are needed though! Maybe a hybrid with enough battery to supply power to tools for decent time without engine
@allanw61033 ай бұрын
@@SeanChandler yes that may be true for most owners and honda is so stubborn they prob wont change it, as its their signature feature along with the tailgate. they could do better with the back seat floor packaging and make it more dog friendly as well. the tech is also dated. the other disadvantage is that you cannot have a full size spare on the ridgeline trailsport like the pilot, which a big minus for offroaders. if it had roof rails you could put a full size spare up top on a roof rack. they should def offer a hybrid if they want to compete with the ford maverick hybrid which has literally blown the japanese away. ford just reinvented the compact truck segment so the japanese are scrambling now....being resistant to change will hurt you and the maverick doesnt have a trunk so it does not seem like its all that desirable in crossover based trucks. the santa cruz has one also. mpg and affordability seem to be more important. im looking forward to the new passport bc if honda goes all in on the trailsport version like the pilot, it could be something special and give all the other 2row midsize suvs like the outback wilderness, grand cherokee some serious competition in terms of sales. the passport wont compete w the new 4runner though bc it wont have a low range but i think the 4runner will outsell wrangler and bronco.

agreed. The value and features you get compared to a Tacoma is insanely good. Same price in a tacoma you lose things like power seats with memory, reliable v6 that gets better mileage, fulltime AWD, lockable storage in the bed, more interior space and leather to name a few. If you have dogs, the folding seats in the rear provide a nice flat space for them to lay down in on long trips. I like a LOT of things about the 2024 Ridgeline, including, but not limited to, the bed storage, dual opening tailgate, V6 engine, and ride quality. (No...I'm not an off-roader). But Honda seems to be reluctant to adopt many of the tech features most new midsize trucks today offer. Their dashboard display and infotainment system is, well, antique. The sound system is not premium by any standard. And it doesn't appear this is going to change for the 2025 model year. For me, the Ford Ranger (Lariat) and Chevy Colorado (Z71) are the two I'll consider over the Ridgeline. I frankly don’t care that it’s unibody, I don’t care about the engine, I mean it’s a Honda it’s going to last you for years, I consider this a truck in every aspect!! I just really wish they would make this more masculine more boxy make it more of an option to compete with other midsize trucks!
@phantom04563 ай бұрын
The Avalanche was not a unibody, it was based upon the Suburban’s body-on-frame architecture. The “sail panels” that you reference are just a styling add-on, likely to hide or minimize the fact that there is no gap between the bed and the cab. That said, I like your videos and you have a very relaxing voice. I also agree that the Ridgeline is all the truck that most need, but the Ridgeline is still considerably more costly than, say, a Nissan Frontier.
@funchfries3 ай бұрын
The sails do actually lend structural rigidity on the Avalanche, but it was still body on frame. It’s part of the reason why the Avalanche had such a composed ride when compared to the rest of the GM lineup

@r.j.bedore9884Ай бұрын
I know it will probably never happen, but I would love for Honda to take their expertise in making amazing 4 cylinder engines and build a small V8 to replace the aging V6. Either a 400hp naturally aspirated V8 based on the K series (either 4 or 4.8 liters), or a twin turbocharged 3.0 to 3.5 liter V8 based on the 1.5 liter turbo engine from the Civic. If they included cylinder deactivation it would allow the Ridgeline to get better fuel economy while cruising on the highway than the V6 while having more power and torque off the line for towing. That would just make this great truck nearly perfect.

I actually like this truck because it's different and it's the bigger midsized truck there is. And if they keep most things, improve some tech and just make it more aggressive on the redesign it will be awesome to buy.

A unibody SUV with a small open cargo area is not a truck. I drove the Ridgeline. It felt like a minivan through and through. I purchased a body-on-frame truck with a 6ft bed. I just can’t make the leap in calling the Ridgeline a truck…I can barely make the leap to SUV.
@fredmoss45403 ай бұрын
Must poular midsized pickup trucks sold are Crew Cab with 5ft Beds not 6ft. The Ridgeline has 5ft Bed it's wider but shallow in Depth. Some people non Ridgeline owners forget the deep in-bed trunk water tight lockable storage space underneath bed. So for example not calculating that the Ridgeline has a wider bed than other midsized 5ft pickup trucks. It also had Lay-flat bed floor design. It doesn't have rear wheel bed intrusions like other Body-On Frame pickup trucks. The wheel humps in the bed are flat. So you can carry 4x8 sheets of plywood or drywall lying flat in Ridgeline. The other midsized pickup trucks you would need to tilt them on sides. So the Ridgeline Bed is shallow but wider. Now come inside the Rear Seat flat-floor storage also beats other midsized competitors pickup trucks. Fold rear 60/40 split Bench Seats up to have large flat floor storage area No hump in floor or underneath obstruction. The other midsized pickup trucks can't match that. The rear seat underneath space when seats are in down passenger seating position. You could slide more than a few standard fishing rods and reels underneath seat. The in-bed trunk can fit a average size cooler in it. I think it was Igloo BMX 52 cooler they once had for example. But luggage and other items fit fine.
@fredmoss45403 ай бұрын
Do a search Honda Ridgeline How To Use The 60/40 Split Lift Up Rear Seat. Do a search Ridgeline Anatomy: Lay-Flat Truck Bed. This is a better illustration then me telling you. Also with Unibody pickup truck unlike Body-On Frame they just can't slap a different bed size on. It would require another separate body. So that's why Honda went with most popular Bed leghth and Bed configuration.

@@fredmoss4540Fred, I hear you loud and clear brother…I do. But it still isn’t a truck. For some people the Ridgeline works fine. For real truck duties, the Ridgeline is way too light duty. If you need to haul a few bags of potting soil or pick up a sheet of drywall, the Ridgeline is fine. Outside of that, it’s a heavier duty body-on-frame truck. I have a 2023 after having owned a 2017. I agree with this review overall. But I don't like some of the changes they made over the years. The pushbutton shifter is crap in all the Honda vehicles it's in, the 2017 RTL radio was worlds better than the 2023 touchscreen, and I really, really preferred the captains chairs with the massive center console bin. Personally I don't care about the driver assist systems. The lane keep works well enough for me but the adaptive cruise is too "busy" in its operation. You can feel it constantly giving throttle adjustments and little dabs of braking whenever you're in traffic. Overall, I agree that it's all the truck most people need and is, at this point, a pretty good value in the segment. I'm looking forward to the redesign but I'm a little worried they're going to try to "truck it up" more, which isn't what makes the Ridgeline good.

The amount of clearance needed for that side-opening tailgate would be a stopper for me. My Jeep had that style of tailgate and even with a shorter door there were several times when I returned to it, only to realize I couldn’t open the trunk because someone parked just a little close behind me. Plus… you have to be strategic which direction you park if you’re unloading since it’s easier to unload on the passenger side, you can’t drive with the tailgate open if you have something long in the truck bed, and sitting on the tailgate would be weird with the big door on one side. I’ll stick with the traditional tailgate on my Tacoma.

It’s basically the 21st century version of the venerable El Camino or Ranchero (50 years ago I had a ’66 Ranchero). They were useful and popular in the their day, at least before they bloated. The Ridgeline won’t do what other trucks may do. Payload is good, but other midsized trucks have better towing capacity. Their off road capabilities aren’t terrible but limited. But if you don’t care about towing or off roading, they do a lot. But they’re not cheap and you’re not getting any fuel economy advantage. I like them, but then, I liked my old Ranchero.

Personally I like the Ridgeline but the bed size is a deal killer for me . I haul mulch as an example that I buy in bulk not in bags. The Ridgeline's bed is shallow and short which means it really limits the volume of material you can haul. That means twice the number of trips to the plant. I think the trunk area of the Ridgeline is cool but I really don't need to haul around stuff in that way. I get it some people do but the reason the sales figures aren't great is most people don't need that feature. For those that really don't haul anything except on a rare occasion and just like driving a truck I can see it but I would be scared as hell to get a load of gravel in one. As for the sheet of plywood thing they mention I don't like to haul plywood laying flat. I haul it with the tailgate up and the plywood resting on the top of the tailgate which prevents it from sliding out of a slick bed. I have seen that happen several times in the middle of a busy intersection. After all this the Ridgeline's gas mileage isn't that much better than a regular truck, yes a little better but nothing to brag about.
@adamnagel74363 ай бұрын
I have one and I use the trunk the most of any feature honestly. Plywood doesn't ever come out when you use a ratchet strap which I always have in the trunk. Mulch always goes on a trailer for me.
@markp.71653 ай бұрын
@@adamnagel7436 I am glad it works for you and I have a couple friends who also love their Ridgeline. But you helped reinforce my statement above. You use the trunk feature more than the bed and you haul your mulch in a trailer. Most pickup buyers do not expect a truck to be used that way. I don't want to have to buy, store, insure and license a trailer to haul mulch or gravel etc... that is my hang up with the Ridgeline and I expect many others have the same objections. I call it the gentleman's pickup. I had a dealer tell me that if you get more than a couple scratches in the bed of a Ridgeline it will really hurt the resale value because shoppers for those think of them as cars not trucks so they don't want scratches. Again I am glad you are happy with yours as I am sure most are.

The first thing I look for in a truck is a fold up rear seat with a flat floor as it's my one must have feature for my dogs. Pups got to have a place to hang out and rear seat designs like this insist on having legs that clip into the floor. No reason for the seat legs when other trucks have flat floors with fold up seats.

Not having a tailgate is an enormous downside. That's one of the main reasons to have a pickup truck to begin with. What if I want to haul something that's a bit longer than my truck bed.
