Honda Power Steering Pump Rebuild
By Aaron Gaghagen
Pulling up in a loud car can be fun. People turning and staring at your car because it's making an annoying, whiny sound can be the opposite of fun. It can be embarrassing with people thinking that your Honda is a hunk of junk. A lot of the time the culprit for extraneous noises is a leaky power steering pump. Replacing a power steering pump with a new OEM unit can be an expensive proposition. But that is not your only option. In many cases replacing the OEM seals, gaskets and o-rings will fix your power steering pump. Today we have our buddy and mechanic, Doug Ruthroff, will show us how to disassemble and reassemble the power steering pump for a 2006 Honda Ridgeline. This process is very similar for Honda power steering pumps across the board. In fact, the part numbers for the replacement seals, gaskets and o-rings are the same as the ones that come on the EM1 Civic Si! Be sure to check your specific power steering pump for the correct parts.
These are the parts used in this video:
Honda 91249-PNC-003 Seal, Power Steering Pump
Honda 91345-RDA-A01O-Ring (13.0X1.9)
Honda 91347-PAA-A01O-Ring (16.7X1.8)
Honda 91347-P2A-003O-Ring (15.2X2.4)
Honda 91348-P2A-003O-Ring (51.0X2.4)
Honda 91349-P2A-003 Seal, Power Steering Pump Cover

Doesn't get any simpler to rebuild but take in mind they had a leak not pump failure from running dry due to complete loss of fluid while driving .. if pump works and is not crazy noisy and only has a small leak then rebuild it when in doubt change it out . There are other places leaks occur main one is oring behind return line pipe will suck air and make noise pump noise but it's only air and easily fixed have a nice day

Agree completely about keeping the vanes "in place"... Much like piston & cylinders (if not new). Makes sense to me :) I have seen other videos where they are picked out and set aside like general hardware. Common sense would dictate that "your way" is the correct way. As each item is worn in and "homed" for lack of a better description, to it's original location and orientation. My world makes sense again. Thank you for the video.

Thank you! I bought my Honda Element a couple months ago from a guy who took really great care of it. He gave me a very well maintained service record with a stack of receipts. Mostly I've been really happy, except for the fact that he had the PS Pump replaced just a couple months before selling it to me, and he bought an aftermarket new pump that is terribly noisy. The fluid isn't frothing and the steering feels fine, it just whines like a cat in heat. From everything I've read, most aftermarket pumps are just crap, and getting one that sounds terrible is not uncommon. I'm looking to find and pull a PS pump from an Element in a U-Pick salvage yard and rebuild it, and your video gave me confidence to know what to look for in a salvageable one, and get it ready to install. Thank you!

Great video. I managed to replace everything except the o ring under the Allen head nut 😠 of course a gorilla torqued it on at the factory, they must have used locktight too 😂 impact didn't work, so I tried a 2 foot breaker bar. Stripped it out so I said screw it. My pump was leaking from behind the bearing, so hopefully the seal in there was my problem

I’ve had it for 3 years so maybe the hose was replaced and it leaked on the pump but I doubt it.. the hose looks old. I really didn’t wanna go aftermarket pump, so this is awesome. this weekend I’m gonna clean it and hopefully I’ll be able to see what’s going on or how bad it’s leaking and if so I’m gonna follow this video! You guys are awesome!

How do you plan on cleaning it? I was going to do what I've done for oil leaks which is wipe the worst off with cloth, then use brake cleaner to get the rest, as long as I've got hoses and belts protected from it. It's been a long time since I've done any work and wanna run this by others first.

Found oil in the rear bank plug tubes, so wound up doing the front and rear valve cover gaskets, upper and lower intake, the tube grommets and new PCV valve. I noticed my power steering pump was a bit wet, and thought time for a new one, and they are not cheap. Going to head over to the Honda parts website and purchase me some o-rings! Thanks guys! Just a heads-up, I was verifying part numbers for an '05 Accord EX w/2.4L, AT and found two pumps offered (one superseded?) with a few different part numbers than you have listed. I'm not calling you out on the "many different models, but all the same seals and o-rings", but VTEC Academy may want to double check your part numbers...or those purchasing parts to double check what you're buying. Thanks for a helpful video!
@VTECAcademy

We aren't saying these part numbers work for all Hondas. We were illustrating that the basic parts are the same as the construction of the power steering pump is similar. It just so happened that the part numbers on an EM1 pump were the same. Always check for your specific application.

My dad stubborn as he is wound't let me do this on his 04 civic, 68972 miles, a lot of original parts, and NEVER serviced parts (aside from oil changes and such), i was there for the last steps, the car worked fine, power steering better than ever (is was leaking, o-rings flatenned) but when they revved up to 4k (to test something) no power steering anymore, than it became intermittent, than finally stopped working. He tried to put another valve from another car in, but no, and just said it was the pump assembly, so we need to get a new one. Guys could be that he "messed up" any of these steps? (Obs. The valve has some little dents and scratches around the grooves on the valve.) Thanks in advance if anyone can help me with this, i could just move on with my life, but although dad is stubborn as hell, he's still my father, if there's a slighty chance of fixing this i'll take it. (Plus a new pump in my country is 1/3 of the price of the car.)

Why didn't you tell us earlier? At least you know for the next time should the need arise.

It would have been nice if he was a little slower.
