2021 has been one heck of a year thus far! I swapped out my 2 inch lift, for the 3.5 inch Traxda lift. Did a podcast with Bradley Hasemeyer from Honda Stories. Completed the Fins N Things trail in Moab, UT. Completed the 13.1K ft. Imogene Pass trail in Colorado, and now to top things off, I was invited by Matt Burnam from American Honda Motor Company to play an advisory role in the Honda Passport Trailsport build for one of the biggest Overlanding Expos in the world, Overland Expo West , in Flagstaff, Arizona.
My focus for this Honda Passport Trailsport build was to keep it authentic and "grounded", which IMO, is very much like how I built out my personal Honda Passport. All too often, I see some nonsensical overland builds. Generally speaking, sometimes, they're overdone, overweight, and more expensive than they need to be.
The Honda Trailsport build was designated the "Honda Rugged Roads Project". My goal with this build was to:
1.) Retain as much: on-road handling, performance, aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.
2.) Add more offroad capability and dependability.
3.) Make this vehicle daily drivable, livable and aesthetically pleasing.
4.) This vehicle must still be the best of both worlds when it comes to onroad and offroad.
Also, keep watching to learn more about where I've taken my 2019 Honda Passport and find out how capable Honda light trucks have been this entire time.
***BIG THANKS to Alan from ‪@BorderlineExplorer‬ for helping me film this episode***

Hello all 👋. Sorry I haven’t been able to respond to many of yours questions and comments. After the release of this video, I started my 480 mile drive from Los Angeles to Flagstaff Arizona. I’ll be living out of my Honda Passport for 4 days and nights, and I’ll be at the Overland Expo West at the Honda booth. It’ll be a busy weekend, but I’ll try to go through and respond. I thank you all for the support!

Jon, this is so cool! You gotta hand it Honda for actually listening to what the real needs are and building a truly trail-capable AWD car that delivers not just some superficial styling but actual performance at its core. Enthusiasts of a certain other car company have been vocal for many years asking to have better off-road performance at least available as an option but the response was both slow to come and largely underwhelming. Having followed your channel for years now, I have seen everyplace you’ve gone with your Passport and over and over, I have been surprised and impressed. I’m looking forward to seeing the current JonDZ adventuremobile in person, along with Honda’s new build, at Expo West in a few days!

I can’t believe they reached to me! I’ve been trying to figure it out. I’ve been on a 60K mile “Honda Care Plan”, so all my maintenance has been done by a Honda Dealership. I bet they looked at all the adventures I’ve been going on, to Moab, to Imogene Pass, to all the high elevation peaks in the Eastern Sierras, the 2.5” taller tires, the lift kit and they compared it to my repair history, which was clean as a whistle 🤣🤣🤣. I have 84K on this thing and still haven’t needed to change my brakes yet. Jumbo sized tires and all…. The ownership experience has been so pleasant! You know of all the issues I had with my previous vehicle. The repair history in those 60K miles was a laundry list 😖. Can’t wait to hang out at the Expo! We need another Kung Fu duel 🤣

Unfortunately Honda did not listen to anyone regarding a vehicle available to current consumers that is actually more off-road capable. Virtually every single off-road mod on the vehicle in this vid is NOT available as standard or an option from Honda in current Trailsport models. Every single thing available to current customers is pretty much an aesthetic only update and nothing more - a new grille, orange colored stitching, (the front bumper recovery mod that even the sales guy admits was only added for this custom mod and will probably not be available to a regular customer in the future), fender flares, a spare tire also not available through Honda - you’d have to add it aftermarket yourself, etc…..

Looks like Honda hit the mark with this one. Huge props to Honda for reaching out to a true overlander like you, that actually uses their product to develop this awesome package. Are they adding a bigger transmission cooler for extra protection? All your hard work is getting recognized, congrats!

It appears that Honda has been looking at a lot of things, but because of the transmission is not prone to overheating, I don’t think that something that is needed. I personally have never had my trans temp light come on. To answer your question, we didn’t go over any technical information, that will come at a later time.

I couldn't stop laughing your critic of the 2019 build. "Tell me I'm poserlanding without telling me I'm poserlanding" build from 2019. I'm glad they displaced the form right into the new fascia and let you influence more of the function side of the build. Now we've got a vehicle that looks sweet and gets function points through the build and acessories. This collab you had with Honda is a win-win. Let Honda worry about the complicated aerodynamics, high pressure air curtains, and OEM flow/styling. Let us (& the market) influence the aftermarket. People tend to choose what actually works! Great job on this one, Jon!

@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 3 жыл бұрын
The new Pathfinder is very similar to the Pilot/Passport, it’s almost an identical clone. It has the same ZF transmission, it has a twin clutch rear differential (probably the one made by GKN that they put in Fords). The only thing to look at is after market support. Since the previous Gen pathfinder had a CVT, the platform wasn’t supported. We all know aftermarket support is a big deal when it comes to off-road / overlanding and Toyota trucks and Jeeps out in the wild don’t stay stock for long. Thankfully, the midsized Hondas have been supported by companies like Traxda USA. There’s no aftermarket springs or shocks, but thankfully, stock equipment has held up to the abuse.

I’m always confused why it’s left out of reviews and so much hype around the Kia Telluride. Also, for car campers, the main reason we got this car is because it’s the only more off road capabale SUV we found where the back seats go genuinely flat when folded down to get a good nights sleep. Well done Jon! Very deserved recognition. I'm glad Honda was smart enough to reach out to you, one of the very few to take a stock Passport, build it up, and show what it can do. The only thing they have left to do, in my opinion, is beef up the transmission which is still way too prone to overheat. Otherwise I think all the high end tech they put into the iVTM4 AWD system sets a decent balance between on road and off.

@@JonDZ_Adventuring I'm probably thinking more of the CVTs and all the vids other channels do where they are pushed past their limits. Your scangauge setup is perfect. @@incredulousdisbelief9841 The 2017 Honda Ridgeline was tested to overheat in Colorado. That had the Honda 6 speed transmission. I really hope a lot of these improvements make it in the 24 Passport Trailsport. I want a min 9.6" clearance from the factory, skid plates and maybe even more specialized gearing for the PP. I'm going to roll a Forester Wilderness for now but if Honda ups their game I'll trade in after a year or two after they've worked out the kinks in the PP. Thanks for the great content Jon!

I'm a 3 year Subaru Crosstrek owner looking for a slightly larger vehicle. The Subaru CVT trans is a huge negative. I have it endured it but hate it. The Passport seems to address a lot of Subaru issues beginning with a better non-CVT trans and more robust AWD system. The Subaru Outback Wilderness has a bunch of issues including CVT issues and frequently broken windshields. Once the remote start via an app and the ground clearance issue is addressed on the Honda Passport, it will be a Subaru Wilderness killer.
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 2 жыл бұрын
Ground clearance is a little tricky, because the midsized Hondas have more “rocker clearance” better approach and departure angles and that “minimum” clearance is at the mufflers (which, isn’t exactly vital). Imo, 9.5” of minimum clearance will be enough for service roads, but you’ll need Atleast 11” to start touching on moderate 4WD trails. Rocker clearance becomes very very important at this level. Once your tires drive over an obstacle, the next thing in line will be the rocker planets / pinch welds. Next year is suppose to be the all new Honda Pilot trailsport. Let’s what they come up with. The new platform will have double wish bone suspension in the front. Upgraded upper control arms like in a 4runner might actually be a possibility now. The new platform will use the Honda 10 speed with a class leading 22:1 crawl ratio for single speed transmissions. If you watch some of my more recent videos, I had something called BALLS (brake aid like lock system) installed into my Passport. This is a manually activated “brake hold” system where I can brake either front left or front right wheel. If Honda puts in a more robust ABS system with a toyota crawl control system and combine that with the already present twin clutch rear differential, it’ll be one really amazing all around adventure mobile. I’m really happy with what the way I have my 3.5” lifted Passport setup. It’s far beyond what most people would expect a modified AWD is capable of. Back in 2016, Honda really made something special and the wilderness line just isn’t comparable. I feel that the wildernesses still hasn’t surpassed the capabilities of the SH Forester with the 4EAT and 2009-2013 Outback 3.6R with the 5EAT. Another platform that also is more capable than the Wildernesses would be Fords Bronco sport / Maverick. Even the base models are out performing. The premium models with GOAT modes do even better, and the badlands / tremor editions add the rear twin clutch limited slip differential (like the midsized Hondas) which makes them do impressive things! We did find the ceiling of Fords 8 speed auto transmission with an 17.9:1 crawl ratio. On a steep 45 degree hill (100% grade) it gave up, where our Honda Ridgeline with a 20.4:1 crawl ratio kept going. Hopefully Subaru and other car companies start making things competitive. Honda and Ford are publicly battling it out for the #1 top AWD spot.

I recently purchased a Trailsport and I am very happy with it. I believe any Passport trim can be outfitted for overlanding as Jon has proven over and over again. It annoys me when people complain Honda didn't do enough with the TS. Though I agree Honda could have given the TS more ground clearance and skid plates folks should keep in mind the average buyer isn't going to do any serious off roading in this vehicle. Honda had to place a stronger focus on the consumers who are likely to use this vehicle as a daily driver. My best friend owns a Grand Cherokee, but hasn't taken it off road once. My hope is in the future Honda won't do anything that will lessen the Trailsport as a daily driver because if they do folks will complain about that. Excellent video. Very happy to see Jon get his kudos for all the work he has done in promoting what the PP can do off road.

Hey, this is a great build, I hope Honda continues in a serious way. I recent bought the 2022 Trailsport Pilot, it is mostly an appearance package but also the cheapest trim level with a good Navi. I have lifted mine with the Traxda 2” front and rear, will probably keep stock 18” tires, you can go about an 1” overall bigger then rubbing issues. My big concern and one Honda should get on ASAP is recalibrating the Honda Sensing for the increased height. They say this only needs to be done when replacing the windshield but almost any increased height above stock is not possible. Trail driving = broken windshields. Without fixing this issue I would see it as impossible to move the Trailsport concept forward.

This is great... but a bit confused as to what the 2022 factory "TRAILSPORT" will come with from the factory vs. other 2022 Passport Trims. Here is what I think - 18 inch wheels, orange interrior stitching, and badging..... Skid plates?? What about unique colors? I like the blue/grey color and hope that is available. It also sounds like there will be a few new HPD options as well. For me - the biggest turnoff was the lack of 18 inch wheels in the previous versions. I like what the Ridgeline offered here,
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 3 жыл бұрын
You’re more observant than me. Sounds like you hit it spot on. The #1 reason why someone should choose the trail sport trim will be because of the 18 inch wheels. More side wall means less chance to blow out a tire. Also, All trailsports are AWD (where as the Sport and EX-L have optional AWD). I’m pretty sure the khaki blue will be a color option. Although, the skid plates in this video were developed and made by Honda, they were used in the Rebelle rally, and I don’t believe they will come with the 2022 trailsport. Now we will have to see what happens to the future models of trailsport and when they will be released. Will they be on the same platform or the new platform the 2022 Acura MDX is on? As of now, the 2022 Honda Pilot is still on the same platform, but if it gets the same front double wishbone suspension as the MDX, then Hondas direction is the one I want to stay with. I truly love the balance of on road and off road.

I love the passport but I think they really need to step up their game if they want to be taken seriously in the overlanding world. But if I had to choose between a passport and a 4runner for an overlanding trip I would have go with the 4 runner. Great video.

Thanks for the compliment Neron. It’s all about preference. I use to drive a FJ cruiser, I stopped driving it and bought a Subaru because I grew weary of the poor MPG and poor onroad handling. Then I discovered I wanted more capability and reliability, so I bought a Honda Passport and lifted it. Now I have 86K miles and have been on over 100+ overlanding adventures in 2.5 years.

The Trailsport is an improvement primarily (only?) because of Jon's involvement. Honda's HPD designation remains largely an appearance package, like it is on the Ridgeline. Whip 'em Jon, they need to get this into production if they are serious about this market.
