Local dealers here are asking MSRP for the Transalp - $9,999 + taxes and fees and offering the Vstrom 800 DE for $8999 or $10,100 OTD including all taxes and fees. That's a significant difference in price even considering the 800 DE original was about $1300.00 more MSRP if I remember correctly.

My OTD for the vstrom was exactly its msrp value. This included state tax and tag. So yes, you can find them discounted already. I bought mine in August so the difference is not that great. The transalp has no discounts.

After reviewing Tenere, Transalp, and Vstrom - I ended up with 800DE. This is my take, im not experienced or anything like that, but just a feel from someone who’s 6’6 tall (around 197cm). Tenere was the most exciting to look at. But more expensive, and more off-road focused. V-Strom I was struck by its beauty, I really really fell in love with this bike, especially the colors too - champion yellow. Bike was amazingly comfortable, it felt so natural to me and it was literally a perfect fit. And now that I’m riding it, I stay comfortable the whole time, and it inspires confidence. And transalp sits in the middle somehow, it’s okay looking, still comfortable, but dash less attractive than v stroms. However, I really didn’t like the paint color. Definitely not regretting my choice, however I might be buying Tenere in few years for more off-road adventures!

It is crazy how perspective between people may differ 😀. I tried V-Strom and Transalp as my new bike contenders. I am 205 cm tall by the way. V-strom felt small to me and as you are sitting "on it" rather than "in it", it was like sitting on top of the boulder or something. Also shape of the gas tank did not fit my legs properly. I tried Transalp and I was rather sceptical as many people say that it is compact, not so large bike but everything was almost perfect from the start and the bike feels very comfortable even with my height. I say "almost" because with my height, there is always some "compromise" but it feels very, very good.

After riding both bikes and owning a Transalp 750 I can definitely say the Transalp has more power and it feels quicker on the turns (in Europe we have 92 HP on the Transalp). The V-strom has better and more comfortable suspension but it's heavy as hell on the off-roads when you try to move it at lower speeds. The gearbox seems more precise at the V-strom but the Quickshifter works perfectly on the Transalp. So far I'm enjoying my Transalp. Greetings from Romania 👍

Highest "power" is delivered at very high revs in Transalp. Probably because of noise emission limits in US it has less "power". It does not matter at all. In daily riding u use torque not "power". Unless you have super bike. Someone who ride motorcycle shoud know this basics.

I mostly agree with you. The two biggest differences are the suspension and power delivery. The 800de is more of a cruiser style power delivery as in the meat of the power band is lower in the rpm range just where you need it for 99% of the time. For example 31:39 you stalled the TA on that hill and also compare how they make a top gear pull on the highway. The 800de was noticeably quicker. For the 800de 15:56 and the Honda 36:29. Air filter location is under the seat on the 800de and you can remove the snorkels for a free hp or two across the rpm range in just 5 min. You'll be pulling the ferrings and gas tank to get to the air filter on the Honda. Overall pretty good review man.

Good review, thanks! I think you nailed the difference well - being a fresh V-strom 800 owner after 650, the bigger weight and size make it better on-road and travelling vehicle, which you pointed out perfectly. In Finland the roads are in such a terrible shape, that you need some of the off-road abilities also riding on sand or tarmac...

Thank you for the comparison. I had a 650 and my wife has one too. I got a good deal on the Vstrom 800 so I went with that. Now I'm a tall guy (194 cm) and also not to light weight. The Vstrom suits me fine when riding on roads, but I bottom out the suspension quite often. I have it maxed out and still... I use the bike for travelling an do ride it off-road too. So I'm going to upgrade that. Otherwise, after putting 10k km on it in one 2 month trip, I'm quite impressed with the capabilities of this bike. My wife, who is of course smaller might suit the Honda better as the Vstrom is a little tall for her to ride.

Well it's a great bike, a true do it all, but I don't really know how I feel about it. It's a no drama bike, but I'm honestly not sure if I like that. It doesn't shine in any particular task or environment, I miss the feeling of the bike shining at at least one thing, even if it drives you mad in the next corner. If it just had a more Dakar-esque front end I could love it. Maybe. As things stand i'm thinking of parting with it and taking the massive depreciation hit.

Here in Oz the DE is 2.5k more than the TA. But the main reason was weight. I got rid of an F series BMW because it was top heavy. On the road that's not a deal breaker, but off road it made a huge difference. The TA is just way easier to manage off road. As a bonus, the TA motor is just the star in class. It's so very "unHonda". Such a fun motor with loads of aural character. The deep base thump down low and the raucous induction roar further up is a giggle.

The gearing on the Transalp is taller and also has a wider ratio gearbox more than about any other midsize bike in it's class, so you can even drop one tooth off the front sprocket of the Transalp to get a lower gear pull and still have a good overdrive sixth gear. Nice comparison. Only in the US does the Transalp have 83hp, everywhere else it's a bit over 90hp which is quite a difference, should make the bike even more fun!

I have the 2019 Honda cb500x and looking to upgrade the transalp similar to my current Honda but wanted more power the transalp fits the criteria but I would be worried about getting a puncture, just had a puncture on my wife 500x and plugged it no drama. Cruise control would be nice but decent fuel range and not being top heavy wins for me personally. Have to again spec up crash bars, hand guards, power outlet and centre stand is a drag to be honest. Also looking at the cf moto 800t and that’s comes with everything makes you think yeah may be the Chinese bike is worth the hit on the residual.

That Honda probably made in China or Malaysia, at least Suzuki still makes stuff in Japan. That will explain the price difference.

Suzuki 800de is a motorcycle created from scratch, new engine, new frame, good off-road suspension and, above all, electronics refined for off-road purposes (well-functioning gravel mode). Honda quickly assembled a motorcycle from what they had, a Hornet engine (road, good top, weak bottom, so worse for offroad), road suspension (that's why it's weak in offroad and without adjustment) and, most noticeably, road electronics that don't work in offroad ( TC useless). Add to this the tragic design of the bottom of the engine and the wrong location of the air filter. The Suzuki is better refined, the Honda is done quickly. that's why they didn't call it Africa Twin 750 (which many people were waiting for) they were afraid to tarnish the AT brand and took the less appreciated Transalp.

You need to watch a few of “Dork in the Road” clips. He will refute all of your statements. Plus the Suzuki looks like a fat whale and weighs like a fat whale.

@@moreorlesdone1497 I know, I watched and commented. I understand his point that the Honda isn't what he expected, but it's not that bad. Except his praising the Honda is like justifying dating an average-but-not-so-bad girl. I have requirements for off-road riding and even the KTM 890 Adventure S has too weak suspension in my opinion. The 800de suspension is better than the WP Apex, the weight distribution is also ok for a nice offroad ride. The Honda is a good choice for someone who prefers road riding and the occasional jaunt into gravel. For a person who likes offroad, the 800de will be better. I hope he will also test the Suzuki

I think in the class the suzuki is probably the better all round bike out the door. By the time you have the bars and the skid plate the weight difference is not important. Then when you do the suspension to bring the TA on par with the suzuki you eliminate the price difference. Then you still stuck with the traction control pain that we seen in the big rock review.

@@moreorlesdone1497 i own a 800 de and while it is not a looker but at least it doesnt look like a budget street bike on a lifted suspension (cb500f , nc750x). It is hard to make the transalp look special or right. Go to the transalp forum, people started to put decal kits on it and it doesn't get any better. I think the white version we dont get in usa is the best by far.

@@moreorlesdone1497 funny how you justify your opinion with the Dork videos but fail to just see the glaring good review this blogger gave the vstrom. Did he call it fat whale? Was it unbearably heavy? He did say it was more refined, better built and better for long term trips. The transalp is not a looker either. As for the additional weight, it is around 10% heavier. I am sure with a bit more training on slow speed maneuvers you can manage the difference. Again, not a big deal. I jumped from a 385 pounds ktm 390 adventure to a vstrom 800 de and I am very happy with it. I am more confident with it than with the ktm.

At 1.05 ..you could have avoided the critical reference to Indian reviews stating that they only mention specs which you can read online. That is just stereotyping not to mention completely inaccurate. If u care to find ....you can see a lot of youtube reviews where the host has actually ridden the bike and given real time performance review.

Suzuki: Pros: Tech: larger & nicer TFT, Air temp indicator, Gps mounting bar, higher muffler, Wider handle bars, better adjustable suspension & airfilter access, Cons: Weight & Apperence (subjective), Honda: Pros: Weight, Apperence(subjective), engine, Gearbox, robust suspension, handling, economy, large option on oem accessories & fun factor. Cons: Airfilter access, Tech flaws, to naked out the box, low muffler, Welded on subframe, basic & limited suspension & quistnable quality of the oem overprised accesories. Conclusion: Both great in their own right, reliability should be great on both. On road: Honda. Multi purpose & more dirt: Suzuki

i have rode the transalp for a week now and man i really want a cruise control to it. today i tried a "long haul" and my god the right hand gets tired fast. is kinda trashy move to try make people bye Africa twin to leave the cruise control out. Honda better make a cruise control that i can bye separately later or i gonna start looking other brands.
