Just starting my rebuild, thanks for your awesome videos.

This is an unbelievable find, just got an 86 today. It doesn’t run, apparently the problem is with the top end and I’m going to start tearing into it right after I watch the rest of these videos. Thanks so much for the details.

Really glad to hear that! It’s a great bike, but the top ends are problematic as they age.

Glad I found this channel, as I just got home a 1986 XL600, it came in boxes just like Yours. Have never done any work on Hondas, only veteran Triumph and BSAs :)

As long as it’s complete, you’ll be fine. Honda is very smart about how they built these bikes. There’s really only one way that things can go back together. Find a free copy of the service manual and get exploded parts diagrams, then take your time, make sure you have everything and put it all back together. It’s almost certainly going to need top end parts

Hello Jason, I'm loving your videos! I just bought one of those camshafts from Israel for a full rebuild. Can you please expand on your feedback on the product? How many kms do you have on them. I'm hearing mixed reviews out there. Thank you and keep up the good work!

So far so good as far as I can tell. I have one bike that’s about 4 years with one. It’s still on the original valve setting as far as I can remember. There really aren’t too many other options though. Here’s my thoughts for what they are worth. No matter how good or bad the camshaft is, the rocker arms need to be in good shape when replaced or they’re going to eat any cam. You really need to be picky when choosing those rockers. The other thing to consider is how hot these engines can run. I change the oil in my xl600 more than any other bike I’ve ever owned. I also like to put in a cup of Lucas oil treatment in with the fresh oil. I really think it’s critical with this engine to keep the oil fresh. I’m also investigating putting an oil cooler on this rebuild, but haven’t found a reasonable solution yet. Keep watching and we’ll see what I come up with.

Great videos Jason. Have seen part 1 & 2 on the XL600R motors. Your effort here is going to encourage a lot of people who are "borderline" mechanically inclined to jump into the deep end and get er done! I was looking for something specific but didn't quite find it. (comment above still stands) Am on my second complete teardown of my 87. There's a particular washer (90452-VM0-000) on the kickshaft that doesn't seem the least bit interested in coming off, and I can't remember what's the deal with that washer. Circlip removed, but the washer seems to be in some kind of groove on the shaft and it's got me stumped. Or does it ONLY slide off the port side of that shaft? Apparently I'll be curling up with a good book (service manual) this evening to see what's the deal. BTW, where in Canada? I'm in toontown.

Thanks for the comment! It has been a while since I’ve been inside a case, but I think you will find that it will only come off from one side. Honda has a way of baking things fool or of when it comes to reassembling things. There must be a reason it wants it on that side, probably to align the gear beside it with the rest of the transmission. I’m located in Pelham, Ontario in the Niagara peninsula.

Hey Man. Whats the ods of me finding your recent overhaul video the same time im doing mine😊. Im from South Africa. I have an old 83 xl600 farm bike that has been standing for 10 years. Was running. missing some parts to get back to origional. Your video is a mayor help. Wil get to part 2 and 3 later.
