Nice to see you being in the workshop. I like most of the tips, but as a machineguy I have a few comments on the bearings. The little amount of grease from SKF is enough, no need to add extra grease because it will cause more friction and maybe attract dirt. Yes I know, the wheel is not spinning super fast and the XR have plenty of power. The outer race should not be lubricated with grease. The thin coat of oil from the factory is enough. If the outer race is lubricated to much and the bearing seeze the outer race would spin and damage the hub diameter. A hairdryer could heat up the hub and the bearing pops right in. I have installed many double sealed wheel bearings and they last a long time through mud and water. No extra grease added. Of course people can do what they like, just my opinion based on education. Ride on 🏍⚙🔧

Hey buds good see you again, I mean on here. I moved away from k town a few years ago and didn’t get a chance to see you on the trail. I had a xrl650r then, so ya that’s cool. But recently my neighbour was ready to sell a xr250r great shape 2nd owner, what was I supposed to do lol. I had to grease the wheel to make sure it went to the right home. I had already done the carb for the owner, so any way, once I got my grubby mitts on it, I gave it a couple quick rides, short for sure, well all the sudden I was like surprise rear wheel must be going flat. So no bs head for the barn, minutes, I’ve pushed enough bikes home, anyway the tire was not low, after I had filled it before from sitting, and wow when those bearings go, it’s happening. So I’ve got parts and looked up some inspiration and here you are. But ya when they go wow they go. I stopped meow. Thanks again!

Thank you for all your informative videos. I recently bought a 93 XR. Upon further inspection disassembly at home, I realized that there was no retainer for the sprocket side bearing. The threads for the retainer are also “gone”. Instead the previous owner has used a bigger seal. All the appropriate spacers are present, and the sprocket side bearing is tight and well seated. In your opinion, do you think I should worry about the missing bearing retainer? Bike will basically be used for mild off road touring. Thank you for your experienced thoughts.

Appreciate the effort, Thanks. Small question, the inner spacer is than somewhat loose within the hub? So It is possible to knock-out one bearing?

I have a 1995 XR650L, I was wondering where you got your aftermarket foot pegs I've been looking for some like those, Nice front end conversion, I did the same a few years ago, threw the old front end in the trash can, called Emig Racing up back east told them what I had and what I wanted, they built me a custom triple tree, my tack and ignition mount up perfect, it also excepts the Honda CRF 450 forks I ordered off eBay, the whole front turned out better than I expected it would

650L rear bearings fail so quick cos water can enter between the axle and the washer collar thing (outside spacer), bypassing that seal and getting to the backs of the bearings. You can get outer spacers with o-rings in them that seal against the axle to fix the issue.
@HeddleTown
@HeddleTown 2 жыл бұрын
These double sided seals will also help with that!

Fun history fact - SKF started the Volvo car company in the 1920's. Volvos are one of my other obsessions. And BMW airheads, Triumph twins... Thanks for the tip. Wondering if the dragging front brake on my XR has to do with wheel bearings. Definitely does not free wheel.

HaHa that is interesting thanks for sharing! Hmmm when you spin your wheels as I did it should do several revolutions before slowly stopping because the disc brakes naturally drag a tiny bit! 🤔

Great videos! Thanks. I weigh about 230lbs. what adjustment # on the back axle would you use to adjust the chain for proper slack?

Really appreciate your efforts on this channel. Alot of good tips also. I also have a XR650L 93 model. Its geting old now...a bit sloppy all over. I think i will do some work on it comming winter. I wanted to ask you even if it may not be an exact science. Its the chain. I notices that on your bike when rear wheel is off ground, it seem like very little slack in the chain compared to others i've seen. Also mine is way looser than yours, but i dont really know how much slack there should be. One thing is bearingwear, but i get this extreme chugging and front to rear vibrations on mine when driving on low revs and wonder if it has to do with the slack in the chain or if its just my bike getting sloppy in all joints and engine internals. Do you have any idea of what to check? My sprockets are ok and no slack in the front output shaft btw
@HeddleTown
@HeddleTown 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! My chain is actually a little loose in this video which could for sure cause the chugging also being in the wrong gear when going to slow! Look around online for a manual for chain adjustment.

@@HeddleTown Thanks for the reply :) I checked with the 3 finger test you showed in your video. I get just 3 fingers under the chain just behind the chainguide. Yes i do have a Vaportech which shows RPM. I run around 3200 rpm to get rid of much vibrations, below that, my teeths almost fall out....which is a suitable RPM you think when driving with a bit of restistance (shallow uphilll). I also feel a bit of hestitation just above ide throttle...its missing there continously, but on more power it pulls ok...i cant take the job pulling apart the carb, unless i know if i should go up or down on which jet. Was a nightmare to get the airside boot on i remember

The shop just installed new rear SKF bearings on my 650L but the wheel doesn’t spin as freely as yours by hand. Should the centres of the bearings be super free moving? Mine had a little resistance when I put my finger in the centre hole and spin

I can't seem to locate anyone, in the U.S., who sells the Silkolene Pro RG2 Lubricant you use in this video. Do you have any suggestions on a similar brand of lubricant for the bearing?

@@HeddleTown Thanks. I did. I gave both sides repeated tries. Tried a bearing tool I bought on Amazon, just bent the tool, no budging of the bearing. That's with heating the hub. They've been in there almost 20 years. Next step I think is order the Tusk tool from RMATVMC. That's all I can think of now. What do you think?

@@georgemack444 I bought a "motorcycle tool" blind bearing puller, wasn't enough room for the inside lip to grab the back of the bearing so that bombed too. Finally got it with, of all things, a concrete anchor, the kind that expands when a machine threaded bolt is tightened into it. Heated the hub some with a heat gun and with a piece of rebar from the other side, tapped it out with a mini-sledge. "Easy peasy" 😂🤯
