After owning Birkenstocks for a few years, I wanted to offer a little insight into how I use them, and how they fit into my "one bag" packing. Website: www.onlyabag.com Medium: www.medium.com/@NathanielMellor

To help the cork last, you need to apply cork sealer when ever it gets dull to keep it together. You can look up videos on this.

This is so good to know, thank you! It didn’t even occur to me that something like this might exist!

@@onlyabag No problem, they can be completely repaired. Even if the cork does finally goes bad they can put a new footbed, and when the sole wears down they can add a new one. Some styles like the Kario are discontinued so it would be worth redoing down the road to keep them going. They can reuse the straps.

It’s a little heartbreaking to know they’ve been discontinued, so I’m absolutely going to be doing all I can to keep them going! I’d be interested to put on a new sole at some point, maybe something from crepe instead? I’ve been looking around at options, and it could be interesting to make them a little more hard-wearing.

Holy smokes! Those Kairos are thrashed! It may be time to retire them. 😉You know you make a good video when I got glued watching it from start to finish. I have 2 pairs of Kairo that still look 90% the original condition, black that I bought back in 2007 and pale green 2009. I think I may have worn each pair less than 24 times!

It’s funny you say that; I just arrived in Rome the other day (where everyone seems to be wearing Birkenstocks) and it made me realize that, wow, my Kairos really are worn. Thanks for saying that! As someone else commented, apparently they’ve been discontinued, so you’re going to be one of the last few people with a pair of Original Kairos!

Have you considered a cobbler? That sole is easily replaced they could probably also add some traction

That's a great idea! I have actually started to look around for one that can replace it with that rubber crepe sole that typically comes on Clarks shoes. It isn't the MOST rugged, but I think it will make them a fair bit more durable. Plus, the crepe can be cut to the exact size of the sandal, so I wouldn't have to worry about sourcing a perfect fitting sole.
